Chapter Four

Maeve’s POV The next morning, I did not want to get up. My mate didn’t even know me, and he still wanted nothing to do with me. The thought made my wolf whimper. “I’m sure our mate was just surprised?” the way my wolf said it made it sound like a question. Like she was trying to convince me or herself but still wasn’t sure if it was the truth. “Dara, he walked away from us. He said ‘mate’ and then walked away”. Dara whimpered at this cold assessment.  I curled up under the covers with the hope that if I didn’t see him again then the bond couldn’t grow and make this harder. I closed my eyes and eventually drifted back into a fitful sleep. A short while later, a soft knock on my door stirred me from my sleep. I peaked my eyes out from under my duvet to see my father enter. “hey, peanut” he said softly, a knowing smile playing at his lips.  Instead of replying, I ducked back under the covers like an embarrassed child.  He walked over and sat on the edge of my bed, placing a comforting hand on the ball under the covers that was me. “I didn’t see you at breakfast…” he stated. Again, I didn’t reply. I felt too awkward to admit the reason why I didn’t go. “…which is such a shame since I think that could have been our last breakfast together for a long time” My head snapped up. He laughed “thought that would get your attention”. “what do you mean ‘last’?” I enquire, barely hiding my eagerness. “Alpha Ashton came to me with some very amusing news this morning concerning his mate. He wants to bring you back with him” My eyes widen in shock. But he walked away from me? Was it just a misunderstanding?  My father sighs “now peanut, he comes from a very large pack and I wouldn’t be surprised if their reputation scares you. So, if you don’t want to go, I will do whatever I can in my power to keep you safe and far away from him”. I wanted to go. I want to be with my mate desperately. Even if I didn’t, there was no way my small peaceful pack could go up against the Blood Moon pack if my father stood between Alpha Ashton and what he wanted.  A grin took over my whole face as I threw my arms around my father’s neck and held him close. “I want to be with my mate, I really do. But father, what will you do? I was supposed to be the next Alpha. If I go with him I can’t” My father smiled down at me. “Peanut all I want is for you to be happy. Besides this why we have backups, I mean betas”. I laughed, overjoyed at knowing my pack would be okay and I get to spend every day for the rest of my life with my mate.  “we need to get you ready. Alpha Ashton is not a patient man and I believe he wants to leave soon”
