Lilly POV “Dad, I don’t think it is a good idea for you to take so many enforcers with you. You know the Trident Pack has been trying to find an opening to attack.” I said. “Lilly, I have sent word that I would not be attending. That way, they would think I’m still here. Only Alpha Mike knows the truth, and he won’t tell anyone. There’s no reason to worry. They will assume all of our pack is here.” My father said. “I still think, just in case you need to adjust how many members you take,” I told him. “It’s for training, and most packs are bringing at least as many as we are taking, if not more.” My father said. “I hope you are right.” I sighed. “I want you to come with me; you may be able to find your Mate. Lilly, you are much older than the usual mating age.” My father said. “I think it is best I stay here. The pack will need me with you gone. I will find my Mate when I find him. I’m in no rush.” I said. My father was planning on leaving for a convention for a week; I just think it’s a bad idea. The Trident Pack has been pushing against our territory, waiting to attack. We outnumber them, but if they get word, my father left with many men; I fear they will attack. My father, however, is the Alpha, so he thinks he knows best all the time. All I could do was pray. I know I would not go, not when the Pack would be vulnerable. Of course, I wanted to meet my Mate. I was twenty-four, and most my age has already settled down and had a child or two by now. It didn’t bother me so much because it allowed me to concentrate on helping my pack. But it never stopped my father from trying to push me to find my Mate. “I’m never going to get any grand-kids.” My father teased. “I’m in no rush, dad. When it’s time for me to meet my Mate, I will,” I said. “Well, you will attend the annual Ball, no ifs and or buts about it.” He said. “I wouldn’t dream of missing it.” I laughed. I decided to finish up one of my paintings. It was from my wolf. She was a midnight Black, which was pretty rare. I have never seen one like her before. I thought she was beautiful. I had most of it done, but I needed to work on the background a bit more. Mostly I painted for fun, but sometimes people would pay me to do special ones for them. I currently had a few paintings on order, but I didn’t feel in the mood to work on them. I just had this feeling that keeps coming over me, and I don’t know if it is because of my father leaving or something else. I just sensed things were going to happen. He would be leaving tonight, as most traveled during the day; he thought they would not be watching us at night. They were always watching. I used to think their Alpha was decent, that was until they tried to take over our eastern border. Their pack was a pretty good size, but their land was not enough for them. My father offered to let them buy some land, though the Trident Pack said it couldn’t afford his price. The price was reasonable. We used to be good allies until Zack took over for his father a few years back. Zack and I went to school together, and he was always a good friend. But now that he is the Alpha, he’s changed. I have heard no horror tales of him being abusive or anything, but their pack had enough money to buy some property. There was no need to try to force it from us. For months we have found them near our borders, and it wasn’t until a few weeks back Zack threatened he would take the land. I wish my father would let me talk to him. Maybe he would see reason. But he didn’t want to get me involved. I tire of them always thinking I shouldn’t do things because I’m a woman. “I thought I’d find you here,” Peter said. Peter was a good friend and one of our trainers. We grew up together. I thought he would have gotten the Beta position, but Mark did instead. Mark was very capable, and he deserved it, I guess. My father would hand the pack over to my Mate, most likely and me, and I’m sure that was why he pushed me to find my Mate. He wanted to retire someday, his old Beta had already retired, and that is why Mark was now the Beta. I think he should try to find my brother, but he said my brother is not an Alpha. He prefers to be solo. My brother didn’t like Pack life much. He was more of a loner. We had different mothers; my father had an affair with a human woman before finding my mother, his Mate. She died giving birth to him, though. I know my father cared for her, and he always talked highly of her. “I was just finishing up. What’s up?” I asked him. “Your father is getting ready to leave and wishes to tell you goodbye.” He said. “I’ll be right down,” I said. My father left, and I took a shower. The one thing about painting is I somehow always got it on me. I was thinking of curling up in bed with a delightful book tonight. I haven’t had time to read all week with helping everyone prepare for the convention. After my shower, I decided on a long white nightgown. I picked out a title from my bookshelf and settled down to read. After a while, I could feel my eyes drooping and knew I would soon fall asleep. I jumped off the bed when I heard the sound of the alarm. Looking at the bedside alarm, I noticed it was almost 1:00 AM. What was going on? The alarms only sounded when we were under attack. I grabbed the keys to the fuse box and headed down the steps. People were running everywhere. I needed to open the basement and start letting people in. “Lilly, hurry, they’re approaching fast!” Rachel screamed. “Who? What is going on?” I asked, looking around. People were running everywhere. I fumbled with the keys and finally found the right one. One by one, they filed down into the basement. I pushed the button hidden inside the fuse box, and the wall slid open to reveal a secret room. After the children were inside, I shut the door and remained outside in the basement. The idea was if anyone came inside, they would just think we were hiding here, keeping those hidden safe. “The Trident Pack has attacked. Mark caught them crossing the borders. There are over a hundred of them.” Rachel’s whole body was shaking as she spoke. Rachel was Mark’s Mate, and I’m sure it worried her. “I’ll be right back. Everyone stay here.” I said. “You really shouldn’t go. If anything happens to you, your father will go mad.” Rachel said. I ignored her; this was my pack too, and just because I was a woman didn’t mean I was going to just sit downstairs hiding in a basement. I needed to make sure there were no other children out there and access the situation. As I came upstairs, I noticed the alarms were no longer going off. Could it be over already? I tried to look out the window but couldn’t see much. So I made my way outside, using my senses to look around me. What I saw when I rounded the corner of the house-made me sick to my stomach; there are bodies everywhere. It looked like both sides fared badly. I needed to try to find my pack members. Surely they didn’t all die. As I neared the clearing near the back of the house, I could see a man standing over what looked to be Beta Mark. I didn’t recognize him. He didn’t seem to notice me as I crept up behind him. “Who are you?” I asked, startling him. He wasn’t a werewolf, but yet he didn’t smell human. He eyed me strangely. His eyes were electric blue, and his cheekbones were high. Something about the way he looked at me made me want to run away, but I froze, unable to move. “I think the better question is, who are you?” He asked me. “You are the one standing over My Beta, and if you killed him, I will make sure you pay.” I spat. “I didn’t kill him; oddly, he still lives. I am awaiting his last breath as we speak, but if you like, I could move it along faster,” He said. “Lilly, what are you doing out here?” Mario said as he bent down next to Mark. “This man is trying to kill him,” I said, pointing towards the strange man. “Lilly, there is no one here but you and me.” Mario glanced at me as if I was delusional. “He can’t see me. Maybe you are delusional.” The strange man said. The pack doctor lifted Mark with the help of Mario and began carrying him into the house. Neither of them seemed to be able to see the man. Maybe he was a witch or some kind of vampire or something. “Looks like your Beta may live a while longer, but that one over there is mine.” He sauntered over to a body on the ground. He stood over the body of a man I did not recognize, and a white light came out of his hand. The man tried to speak, and I was sure he was from the Trident pack. He pushed down on his chest, and I thought I could see the man’s eyes flicker as he lay on the ground. I could not let him kill him, even if he was a part of the Trident Pack. I jumped on top of the strange man’s body, determined to take him down, and that’s when it hit me. The tingles ran throughout my body, and at that moment, I knew this strange man with the glowing hands is my Mate. I jumped back in fear. There was no way. He isn’t even like me, and he’s something else entirely different. “If you wanted to be on top of me so bad, you could have just asked.” He smirked. “You wish. What are you, some kind of crazy Warlock or something?” I asked him as I backed up from him. “Crazy Warlock? That’s a good one, Nope guess again.” He laughed. “Well, you are not a werewolf, but yet not human. How can you even be my Mate?” I spat. “I’m not a werewolf, but I could turn into one if it pleases you. Though I dare say we are mates, we only met, though your use of British slang is most odd.” He chuckled. “There is no way the Goddess gave me you,” I said more to myself. “The Goddess, you say? Oh, I see, you meant Mate as in the love of your life, the one made for you. Well, I can assure you, I’m not him, or rather you’re not her. I have lived for thousands of years, and no woman has ever tied me down. However, I am willing to uh have a little fun if you know what I mean.” He winked. I could feel my cheeks getting flushed and knew they were red. “No, thanks; I’m sure you used some kind of magic to make me think you are my Mate. I guess you can’t get a woman any other way.” I said. Truthfully, I was sure he could get any woman he wanted without magic. He was hot. His hair was a light brown, but when the light hit it, you could see the flecks of blonde. His eyes were like the deep blue Sea, and easy to lose yourself in, if you weren’t careful. I was sure under those clothes, well maybe I wouldn’t think about what was under those clothes. I glanced up, noticing I was looking him up and down. “Clearly, whatever I have done, has worked on you.” He smirked. “What are you?” I asked him. “I’m something you shouldn’t be able to see, but I can assure you if you see me again, it will be because you are taking your last breath, and I will relish the feeling of taking your soul,” He whispered. He was so close now, and I could feel my knees grow weak. “Don’t worry; I will make sure you feel pleasure before you die.” I could feel his breath on my neck, and a moan escaped my lips. I pulled away quickly and caught my breath. He raised his hands, and two red wings came out his back. It was the Angel of Death. I heard stories about him. Why would the Goddess make him my Mate? Maybe he did cast a spell? “By the way, you were too late. His soul is mine You would be happy if you knew his intentions towards you.” He said before he took to the sky. He left, and I collapsed to the ground.
