Chapter 1
A year later "Sandra, I asked you to reschedule these sessions two days ago!" I frowned at my assistant, who gulped. "I am so sorry!" "What else could you have been doing? You have one job!" I snap and she flinches. I pinch the bridge of my nose. "Today's your last day, reschedule the clients and make sure that all the fury they'll have is directed at you." I turn around and walk back to my office, my heels echoing on the marble floors. I'm not a harsh person really, well, not all the time. But she literally only has one job and she can't even do that! "Jackson," I stop outside my door, to peek at my HR manager. "Yes, Ms. Devila." "I need you to send out a vacancy notice for a new PA." His eyes move to a crying Sandra, then back at me. "Okay." He nods at me, pushing his glasses back onto his eyes and I walk into my office. I set the A/C to a comfortable temperature, and plop onto my seat. "Ms. Devila?" "Sandra?" I raise an eyebrow at her, as she looks down at the floor. "Your 9:30 appointment is here." "Send her in." Sandra disappears, shutting the door behind her and I turn around to admire myself in the glass reflection. A lot could change in a year, I mean look at me, I have a dog now. I had dyed my hair black, and wore it in it's natural state more often now. It was usually in a high puff, or an afro. To work I wore simple dresses, and pant suits, which I loved. And I could never forget my heels. Nothing felt better than the sound of it slapping against the floors, everyone knowing when the boss was coming. It was a powerful feeling. Which is why I would never fail to notice another empowered woman by the sound of her heels. I waited for the door to open, and close before I spun around. My eyes widen as I stare at the woman before me. "I hope I'm not late." She says, her face crossed as she tilts her head at me. "Emma?" # "You've grown out your hair." That was the first thing I could utter to Trevor's sister. "I have." She says curtly. It wasn't that I was intimated, but I was shocked to see her here, after all this time, especially after what I did. I wasn't sure what her intentions were, and by the look at her body language, I definitely wasn't sure if they were good. "Why are you here?" I ask bluntly. "Well, for a therapy session, of course." She takes a seat on the client's chair, and I walk around the desk, leaning against it. "You left Italy, for a therapy session? Please Emma, let's skip the theatrics." She eyes me for a moment before shaking her head at me. "You have no idea, do you?" "No idea of what?" "What Trevor's going through." My heart sinks. "What did you do to him?" "Huh?" I furrow my eyebrows. "Did you cheat?" "What? No." "Steal from him?" "Excus-" "Did you leave him for someone else?" "Okay enough!" I stand, crossing my arms. "What happened between Trevor and I, is none of your business, we broke up and that's all you need to know." She stares at me, before smirking and leaning back. "All of this," She motions around the room. "It's his, isn't it?" "Its under my name, so I'm not sure your little assumption is correct." "Oh," She chuckles, "That's cute. In fact, this entire place, is cute." "I think you should leave.” "It would be a real shame if it all were to suddenly, . . . go away." "Is that a threat, Emma?" I smirk and she glares at me, standing. "I'd be careful if I were you Ocean, it may just be a promise." She turns to leave, but stops at the door. "He brought you all the way to Italy . . . he showed you his entire family, he protected you, he loved you and you left him. Can you at least tell me why?" "It's complicated." I reply curtly, and to my dismay she turns around to face me, instead of leaving like she should. "Ocean-" "Emma, look at me! I am doing well okay, and I'm not even talking about materialistically, I'm talking about emotionally. I feel . . . I feel okay, and I haven't felt that way in a long time." "And that's great," She replies. "But what about my brother? It doesn't matter how he feels?" "I didn't say that." "It feels like you're saying it." "But I didn't." "Mm," she squints. "You kinda did." "Okay get out." "At least call him." She says and I frown. "You don't think I've tried to do that? He disconnected his cell." She grabs my pen from my table and scribble what I presume to be his new number. "Call him." She finally leaves. "Well sure, it's not like a while ago you were threatening me or anything." I whisper to myself, picking up the sticky note from the desk. Just at the sight of his name, and knowing that his actual number was right in the palm of my hands, had me feeling nauseous. It's been a little over a year since we've had any contact, but it felt like it had been 10. After Lunch I had to head home to get ready for a Business networking event that a friend of mine was hosting. Rex waited outside with an umbrella, as the rain poured heavily from the sky. "Good day, Ms. Devila." He greets, once we're in the car. Rex told me once, so simply, that he didn't like my name. didn't have much to say to that. So for now, I was stuck with Ms. Devila. "Hey Rex, can we head straight home? I have some things to get done before we leave tonight." He nods. "You know that your wish is my command."
