The Party

851 Words
After cooking a grand meal for nearly 450 pack members and guests arriving at the party while also setting up tables, chairs, tents, and decorating the whole backyard of the packhouse, the ceremony was all set to begin, which meant that it was also time for me to start getting ready for my departure. The sun is starting to set and the stars are coming out. I can hear music playing outside and see a trail of cars arriving. I begin to hear the car doors open and close while the guests are exiting them and making their way to the backyard area. Even though I wasn't invited or even wanted to go, I can't help but think about what it would have been like if the circumstances were different. If the Alpha and Luna actually cared for me as one of their own or if the son was actually my mate. Would he have been more gentle or caring, making being here bearable? I get myself out of fantasy land and grab my backpack. With not much to begin with, there's not much that I needed. I pack my bag with my two water bottles, my extra shirt, underwear, and pants, along with some fruit I had gotten while I was setting up the event, and waited until the announcement when I knew everyone would be occupied. After a while, the noise grew from outside from all the talking and laughing from all the people who had arrived. I look at the clock and it was 8:30. The ceremony was about to begin in 15 minutes. I got up and started stretching, knowing that I didn't know how far I was going but should be prepared to walk for a while as the border was at least 25 miles away. When the clock struck 8:45, I could hear someone begin tapping on the microphone, which meant it was time to make my escape. I headed down the stairs, through the hall, and made my way to the service exit which I only typically used as I was the only one who ever took out the trash. Once I saw the night sky and felt the cool breeze on my skin, I began running and never look back. I could hear the gravel crush beneath my feet. I think about having a wolf so that I could shift and be out of this territory within 15 minutes, even a slow wolf could be out in 20. I pushed the thought aside and just kept running. I needed to make it far enough to where I couldn't hear the loudspeakers so that I could make enough distance and time to leave the territory before anyone noticed I was missing. I kept getting further away from the packhouse because it became harder to hear anything and the talking and music were starting to disappear behind all the trees. I stopped running for a second when I realize it was getting harder to catch my breath from sprinting the whole time instead of trying to pace myself. Once I catch my breath, my adrenaline takes over again and I begin running some more. I check my watch and see that it's 3:56 in the morning, which was good news for me as the ceremony should have ended and people should be in their rooms sleeping or doing other activities and no alarms had been sounded that I was missing. I decided to take a quick break, drink some water and eat the apple I had brought with me. I thought to myself, with the pace I had been keeping, I should have about 3 miles left. I was heading north because I know we had tensions with that pack, but through a treaty, we were technically in a period of peace. I hoped that their Alpha would be at the ceremony, so I could pass through the territory without being noticed to get into the city, so I could enter the human world. If I was never going to have a wolf, then I didn't want to be surrounded by all the reminders. I walked the rest of the way and see this clearing that looks like an invisible barrier that separates the pack borders. I walked along the edge of my border, or should I say the Red Moon's pack border, because as soon as I walked across I'd be a rouge. I see an area that somewhat connects the two borders so I decide to use it as cover to cross land to what I know is the High Crescent Moon pack. As soon as I crossed the threshold, it felt as if something had taken over me, all of a sudden I felt this unimaginable pain causing me to let out a scream I was so desperately trying to contain. Before I knew it, my vision started to blur and my knees became weak. I fell to the ground and see in the distance, someone running towards me, but before I can move to try and run away, everything turns black.
