Headed Home

"Today's the day!" Laura exclaimed coming into the hospital room with her breakfast and waking her. It hadn't been much of a peaceful sleep, but she needed all she could get. At least that was what the doctors kept telling her, besides what a miracle she was. Her body had recovered faster then it should have and all the doctors could come up with was she had a strong body. There were apparently more then normal white blood cells in her body while she was healing. Now they seemed normal when she was almost healed, which baffled the doctors.  "Good Morning Laura." Serena said as she slowly sat up. Her body was no longer in pain, in fact it was almost as if it hand't happened at all. She was even walking normal now, and it had only been a week. The nurse pushed the small table in front of her and placed the tray of pancakes, syrup, eggs and sausage in front of her. Being the nurse she was, she opened her orange juice pouring it into the glass and the syrup all over the butter flavored cakes. Serena smiled and immediately dove into the food. For some reason she could not satisfy her appetite. Everything she ate just seemed like it wasn't enough.  "I must say, I am going to miss you my dear, but I am glad to see you healthy and heading home." Laura said walking around the room turning off machines, undoing the things attached to her while she ate. She went on to put clothes on the bed and pack up the few things she had kept with her. By the time Serena was done with her food Laura had everything prepared.  "I will miss you as well Laura, you have been very kind to me." Serena said with a smile pushed the small table away and standing up to stretch. "So will I be able to shower today? Take the bandage off for a while?" "Yes my dear, doctors has approved of bandage coming off and if you can stand on your own you can shower before you mother comes for you." Laura said turning around while Serena was nearly jumping out of the bed. She rushed over to help her thinking she might fall, but when Serena landed on her feet she hardly felt any pain at all. Her leg seemed to be healing just fine. "Oh, you seem just fine." "Yeah, it hardly hurts anymore. Thank you for the clothes, I will try to make it quick!" Serena almost couldn't hold in her excitement as she gathered her clothes and made her wait to the bathroom. There was a slight limp from the wound on her leg, but it didn't bother her much anymore. The first few days were pure agony but now she felt on top of the world.  The hospital water got hot a lot faster then she could undress, but once it was adjusted and she stepped inside it was pure bliss. The old wrapping was off her leg, the water cleansing her wounds best it could. Laura had gathered up enough items for her to wash with, do her hair which was clumped together and a mess and her body. She even found her a razor though it wasn't like her one at home. Once she felt clean and that night was officially washed off her body, mostly, she got out. Not that she really wanted to, but she had to. Her mother would be here soon, probably drunk and angry at her. She managed to untangle her hair with a brush, dressed herself and walked out of the bathroom into her room. Laura met her, putting on a new bandage.  "Okay, so you must change this twice a day. I will send you with all you need. Keep it clean, medicated and bandaged and you should not put a shoe on that leg for sometime. Flip-flops and slippers are all well and good, but nothing that will cut off circulation to that leg. I don't want you back in here. There is also a prescription for some narcotics, and instructions on how to use them properly. We don't need you addicted to these drugs. I hope for your sack my dear this never happens again. and that one day you will `give up your attacker." Laura gave her a bag of items and a hug, Serena could feel her sadness in it. She felt bad for her still, Serena could feel it. Serena sighed softly and hugged her back.  "Thank you for being so good to me Laura. I appreciate it so much." Serena replied back to the older nurse before a knock came at the door.  "Your mother is here Ms. Evens." One of the younger, more bubbly nurses, popped into the room to talk to them. Laura and Serena parted ways before the older nurse sat her in the wheelchair she had brought in. Per hospital policy she had to leave in it, but that was probably what Laura wanted her to do.  "Darling! You look so much better!" Her mother chimed in seeing her enter the waiting room with a huge smile on her face, but everyone around them could smell the alcohol and the fact she was washed in perfume. "Hello mom, glad to see my lack of presence hasn't changed you." Serena spoke out to her and sighed softly. She looked up at Laura who was hesitant to let her go seeing her mother this kind of way. "I will be fine Laura. Mother, ready to go." "Yes, don't worry nurse lady. I have my daughter from here. No worse, Hanna is in the car waiting." Her mother tired to play it off as if she cared but if Hanna was in the car that meant she had been forced to come here. Hanna was her aunt on her father's side. She was the only reason her mother even still had Serena.  "Wonderful. Thank you again Laura. See you later." Serena stood up, hugged the nurse once more before following her mother outside. Once they were out of sight she grabbed her arm dragging her to the running car. "Are you happy now, got yourself thrown in the hospital for being stupid and weak. You were the reason you father was dead, to bad they couldn't take you as well..." Her mother was screaming at her, but all Serena could do was feel her blood boil. Pulling away from her mother Serena grabbed her wrist and made her mother look at her.  "That's enough mother! His gone and it kills me every day that he is no longer with us but I will no longer be blamed for his death by your mouth or any others. Just do what you do best drink and ignore me!" Serena let her go once she cried out in pain before getting into the back seat of Hanna's car.  The ride home was quiet for once. Her mother seemed to be stunned by her suddenly confidence. Serena had never stood up to her mother before, to anyone before. It was not in her nature. Hanna stopped only to get her the pain pills before driving them straight home. The moment they were in the door her mother went to her liquor while Hanna babied her. She made her get into her bed, prop up her leg and get her pills ready, but all Serena wanted to do was go to her music. She wanted to write out her emotions. She waited patiently for Hanna to leave after yelling at her mother and again threatening to take her away before she got out of bed and went to her piano. I had been her father's and she moved it into her room after his death. her mother had thought it was gone as most of his items were, and that she had brought another. Not that her mother ever came into her room anymore.  Serena sat at the piano and began to play out the sorrows in her heart from that night. The piano carried well on into the night before her mother started to pound on the walls. Serena had school in the morning and she was actually excited about going. Walking into her closet she tried to see something that she wanted to wear, but now looking at it nothing seemed worthy enough to wear. Her wardrobe was bland and rather sad. However, her mother had many clothes she had cleaned out and tossed into storage. She shopped every few weeks for something new not liking the items she bought while shopping drunk. Something Serena hated, until now.  Her mother was passed out, bottle in hand on the couch when she stepped out of the room. She limped her way into the spare room and grabbed out the bags of clothes. There were over a dozen, but she wasn't about to go through them all in one night. Taking maybe half she drug them into the room and dumped them on the floor. Spending an hour sorting through clothing she pulled out black skinny jeans, which she would have never chosen to wear any other time and after some more searching her eye kept settling on a corset. It was black and red, laced up the back with roses over the breast area. That topped with a lace under shirt and some knee high boots. She laid it on the chair and got to bed just as the moon hit its peak. Though you would think that she had rested enough in the past few days being in the hospital, the moment her head hit the pillow she was out...
