Chapter 3

1255 Words
Ryan’s POV She is happy, my mother is happy, she is smiling at another man, I have just lost my father and here she is, in the embrace of another man, sharing glances and smiles, acting all romantic, something she never gave to my father. How easily does a woman leave someone who loves them and move on to another person all because of the word love? How can she move on so quickly, it hasn’t been up to two years? How can she give her heart away so quickly? They are all the same, women, they leave you after promising their love for you, after making a vow to be yours only, love… how stupid is that word, love? I have to come back, I have to abandon everything and return everything because she found love. I wonder how long this one lasts too. I wonder how long she stayed in love with this man before finally breaking his heart like she did to dad. I couldn’t stand it anymore, watching them laugh, watching them talk, watching them act like everything is all green and romantic. I was tired of watching it all, I wanted to turn in, all I had to do is to be a good son and not f**k things up for her, not mess up this life she picked up. I got to my feet and glanced from my mother to Mr. Bryan. “I should go in now, it’s a new day tomorrow.” I told him, as humble as I could, yet wonder how this façade of mine would last, and I was running out of patience. “Oh, Ryan, sorry for keeping you up late, I hope you have a wonderful night's rest,” he said softly with a smile. Acting like a typical father, I don’t need one again. I scorned in my head and glanced at my mother, she shot me a cold gaze, she knew who her son was, she knew me, but I don’t think she knew me well enough. I will pay her back, for the eternity of pain she has caused me and my father. “Good night son.” She flashed me a forced smile, and I was glad she should keep it up. I know she loves this man, but I would make it difficult for her to keep him. I turned to head up when suddenly I heard Katelyn also saying goodnight to her father and my mother, and then she rushed over to catch up with me. Silly girl, thinking she has found a stepbrother, I have yet to figure her out. Although she seems happy, I don’t indulge in anything that gives a lady pleasure. I knew I had to work hard, to make her beg her father to send me and my mother away. “Hey,” She called out as soon as we got to the parlor upstairs. Good thing we would both be sharing this place, away from my parents. My plans were going well, thanks to this lovely mansion owned by her father. “Hey,” I turned to her and she adjusted her hair and pecked up at me, and I almost laughed at her being coy. “Umm…” She swallowed hard, I watched her peek up at me from her lashes, she must be avoiding my gaze. Well, who wouldn’t? She has been stealing peeks at me, in admiration I guess, since I get that quiet often, “How do you like the place?” She asked, demonstrating by stretching her hand, and I followed her gaze and looked around. It’s a fine house, warm, filled with love I guess, unlike the cold castle of my father's which was now abandoned after moving here with my mother. I can’t wait to change this warmness. “It’s lovely,” I said in a simple, distant voice. If she understands, she would know I didn’t want to have more of this conversation. I prefer being alone, even if what she wants is a warm stepbrother, something I doubt I can give her. “I would give you a proper tour around the place after school tomorrow.” She suggested, only she didn’t know that I had done my observation already while I went to swim. “Okay.” I replied with a single word. She flashed a smile and was silent for a while. She should have gone to sleep if she had nothing else to say, but she still stood there, and I didn’t want to show her the bad side of me today, let her be happy, because that joy would soon turn into pain. “The bathroom…” She started speaking again and I listened. “It’s a shared one…” She pointed. “Over there.” I traced her fingers with my eyes, although I had already noticed it when I climbed up here for the first time. “Sorry since we have to share the bathroom, I really told my father about having a built-in bathroom inside the room, but the house was structured like this already and we can’t change it, and when I gave it more thought, I didn’t think it was a bad idea sharing a bathroom with a sibling…” She pursued her lips as if realizing she was sprouting nonsense from her lips. “I mean a sister.” She quickly added and I nodded, hoping she could just let me go in and sleep. “Well, I hope you don’t feel uncomfortable, we can list out the time that we have to go…” I looked at her like she was stupid. How can we list out the time we have to use the bathroom? If she does have bathroom time, then she must still be a child. She is really crazy, and I ruled it out as that. She swallowed hard and then stopped talking briefly, and I thought we were about to call it a night, but then, she started again. “About school tomorrow, you don’t have to feel anxious, everyone is friendly, and I can introduce you to my friends, and about school work. I get good grades, so I can put you through most of our studies, and even borrow you some of my notes to cover up with---“ You might be mistaking me as a dummy… I couldn’t help but frown, even if she meant well, I felt tired listening to her bullshit. “We should call it a night now.” I couldn’t wait any longer, it was already late, and I don't joke with my sleep. “Ah…” She parted her lips. “I’m sorry, I got so excited, please have a good night's rest, and we will continue tomorrow.” She told me with a smile again, and I wondered if she ever gets tired of smiling. I nodded and without a second glanced at her, I walked into the room and shut the door, and then I heard her footsteps before walking to the window. I glanced outside of the window and curled my hand into a fist. I gazed at the night sky, there were no stars, just a half moon giving light to the world, my heart seemed like that, only that there was no light, I couldn’t see anyone, just darkness and coldness. I knew it would be hard to live up to the expectations of my mother, a woman I have learnt to despise.
