Miracle POV   "Miracle!' I could hear my mother's voice as she tried to get into the door. The sounds of sirens in the distance brought me back to reality. If only I could somehow control it. The fire danced and shook around my feet, the hot blaze scorching me. I had to get out of here before they came. They would wonder how I'm not burnt and how I could survive it. The worst would be someone coming in and risking their life for me. It's one thing to burn down this apartment but another to hurt people. It's a line I refuse to cross. I'm changed more in control; I told myself as I took a deep breath. I rushed to the sink and pulled out the sprayer, and tried to douse as much of the flame as I could until I ran out of time and ran to join my mother in the hallway. My mother screams as I see the firemen rush towards us, but I tune them all out. My mother shook me, "Miracle!" "I'm safe," I simply said. "Is anyone else inside?" I shook my head, "No," "She managed to get out here just in time," My mother cried. "Ma'am, do you need medical attention?" An older man looks me over with a frown and a sympathetic look. "I think I'm okay," I said. He hesitated a moment then went to join the others inside the apartment. My mother looked at me. So many emotions passed her tanned face at once. I instantly feel sick to my stomach. My mother can't escape my problems even when I'm grown. "Let's just wait for the fireman," she pulled me to her, and I resisted the urge to cry. "I can't do this anymore, I whisper between my sobs. A few moments later, I hear a gruff man's voice, "The fire isn't that bad. Maybe she freaked thinking it would spread fast," My head shot up as I looked through the doorway of the apartment. But, aside from a few scorch marks on the hardwood floor, it didn't look too bad. That can't be. I saw it; the whole place was on fire. The water I sprayed didn't do much to help it. I don't understand. "Fire's out. Thankfully it was just a small fire. Do you have any ideas how it happened?" A bald, tall fireman said. 'No, I just came home when I saw it," I said. "There are a few candles near there," he pointed to the scorch mark on the floor at the coffee table, "maybe one fell over or something. The good thing is we got here before anything spread," "Thank you. I'll be sure to be careful," I smiled, hoping they would leave soon. Once they left, I motioned for my mother to sit down. My mother sat, but her eyes glossed over as if in a trance, "I saw it, Miracle," I knew she meant the fire, and so I nodded my head, "Yes, but how? I didn't put that fire out. I tried with water, but it was no use," "It was him," she whispered so low I almost couldn't hear her. "Who, mother?" I leaned in closer to her. "If he's back then, either you are safe now or in more danger than ever," she continued without answering me. "In danger from what?" I placed my hand over hers, "Who is my father?" My mother looked up at me as tears fell from her green eyes, "He made me promise not to tell you unless he came back," "So he just left me like this?" I pointed around my small living room. "No," she stood up from the couch and paced back and forth, "I was supposed to have your powers bound," I thought of all the things I had done growing up, the many fires, the various moves. Yet, all this time, there was a way for me to live normal, "Why didn't you?" I cried. "The woman, your father, sent me to was compromised. When we got there, I could hear her talking to someone, and I knew she would turn you over to them instead," she once again sat down on the couch. "The demons?" "There are no demons," my mother said. "But that man told me that my father is a demon," I said. My mother sighed, "He is, but he is the last of his kind until you," "Is that why he went away?" I needed to know how he could abandon us. My mother didn't answer me for a while, and I wondered how much of what she told me growing up was true. "At first, I believed him. But, then, every time your powers got out of control, I worried they would find you," she said. "Who are they?" "I never knew. Your father didn't tell me their names. Then, after years went by and you were safe, I wondered if he lied to me. Maybe he was...," my mother stood, ending her thought as she shook her head no. "I am sure the guy will find me again," I said. "We can't be sure he's not who your father warned me about all those years ago," my mother looked at me, her perfectly lined eyebrows arched up. "So let me get this straight, my father is a demon, and someone wants to kill me?" I should be happy I'm finally getting answers from her, but I'm in shock at it all. Sure, I knew there was something to the fireball hands and abilities, but I was thinking more on the side of Witches. It's much easier to believe witches exist rather than Demons. I know I should have told you before. Every time I wanted to, something happened, and as you got older, the accidents happened less," I wanted to be mad at her, but deep down, I knew it couldn't be easy for her all these years. She couldn't make friends cause we never stayed long anywhere; that also meant she couldn't find love again, at least not until I grew up. I reached out and hugged her, "Mom, I know it wasn't easy on you, and it's not your fault," I wanted to ask her the one question on my mind but feared the answer, "Mom, does my father look like a demon-like from the books?" She wiped her eyes and laughed, "No, he's very handsome. If he had horns or any of that, I never saw it," I smiled, glad we both found something to laugh about out of it, "So what do we do now?" "I think you need to stay away from this guy. If your father wants to see you, he will find you himself," My mother looked at the scorch marks on the ground, 'Now let's go buy a nice rug to cover that up," Just like that, my mother fell back into her old habit of shrugging off a mess I made, and I let her.
