THE BIRTH

680 Words
Lightning flashed at a distance in the evening red sky. Thunder greatly rumbled as dark clouds started looming swallowing every bit of light left of the day like an angry demon. Though the night was not yet, the sky was dark even darker than most nights. Wind was wildly blowing almost like a raging tornado bringing up chuffs of farm produce and dust. At the nearby sea coast, rough waves forced fishermen and sailors to firmly dock their ships and boats. Miles away inside a magnificent golden castle, an old man with extremely wrinkled face and withered white hair stood beside a window and appeared in deep thought. The nature variation was also noticed across all other kingdoms and continents. Back at Neval kingdom, Kinsha village, a village of farmers where the wind was at its strongest, where lightning flashed more regularly and the thunder rumbled even more fiercely “Quick take the wheat to the barn….” A burly man with overgrown beards shouted to his daughters. He was Greg Kalder. “its goin’ to pour soon” he said dragging a huge sack himself. The three slender girls were tirelessly doing their father’s bidding until all the wheat was stored safely. A piercing scream sounded inside a room in the compound. Greg Kalder ‘s face contorted with worry as he intently gazed at the room where the sound was coming from. His daughters only mumbled incoherently inside the burn and avoided their dad’s gaze each time he gazed at them. Another scream sounded this time even louder than the last. Drops of rain started to descend at an alarming rate making the whole family retreat to the room involuntarily, the barn was just too small to accommodate all three of them. “just a little more..” the village nurse urged thick beads of sweat cascading her forehead. “ah” the auburn haired woman laying on the bed groaned her face lost in pain of labour. With a final push and scream, a child’s cry was heard. The nurse almost heaved a sigh of relief when the unexpected happened. The woman started bleeding profusely her face being drained of color each passing second. The smile plastered on her face was slowly receding replaced with blankness. The nurse panicked and trembled in horror at the sight before her. “ horse balls” she cursed repeating the after birth procedure with agility ,skill and experience. The woman’s body was quickly going limp , her hold on the cuffs she held slowly loosening. At this rate she would die but suddenly, just suddenly as if a miracle, the bleeding stopped. The nurse wiped her forehead with a deep heavy sigh. She quickly gave the woman water after the greatest of her worry was solved then cleaned the place up. She then took the baby , wiped it and wrapped it in a small cloak. The woman faintly smiled as she held the boy in her arms, the boy had the darkest of irises she had ever seen but its supple brown beautiful skin made up for its terryfing eyes. Outside the room, a boy of about sixteen years of age had joined the girls. He was as huge as Greg and really resembled him, he was his first born. The nurse came over to summon them at this time. Greg Kalder couldn’t stop the wide grin that was slowly spreading on his face when he saw the boy in his wife’s arms. His daughters and son curiously gazed at the new born baby that attracted everyone’s attention. “ let’s name him Damien after my dad” the woman mumbled in a tired manner. “Damien Kalder” Greg Kalder smiled whilst smoothing his wife’s hair. And thus , Damien Kalder was born in a poor peasant Kalder family. The kingdom received the heaviest of rainfall that night.
