Chapter 1 *Marcel P.O.V* “The cars outside sir,” talon my most trustworthy friend and bodyguard said to me, I threw my jacket over my shoulder and headed out the door. I'm heading to one of the biggest malls in the city. Confluence. one of the many malls I own along with a couple night clubs, hotels and restaurants. Once we arrived I got out the car and made my way inside. The mall is already empty, just the way it should be when I need to pay a visit. The only people who are ever in the mall at the same time as me are ,my guards, the mall guards and the shopkeepers. Reason for that is because of who I am, and what follows me. I’m Marcel Blanche. I'm twenty-six years old, and I own this city, and everything in it. I come from one of the most feared mafia families, The Blanche. I’m tall(6 foot), brown hair, black eyes, a smile that could kill or make you wet your pants. Many say I’m cold-hearted, ruthless, callous etc... , but what they don’t know is that I don’t want to be this way, but I have to be this way. You see. I watched my mother, father and older sister draw their last breath right in front of my very eyes. My mother Elle hid me away in a secret compartment in our house so the delvinos wouldn't get to me. I watched as every last one of them drew their last breath, I saw my sister blowing me her very last kiss before a bullet entered her head. So yes, I’m ruthless but not because I want to be, but because I have to be. But enough about me. Let's get back to why I’m here. It's my mamie’s (grandmother) fiftieth birthday and I hope to get her something different. Something she doesn’t have and something that will put a genuine smile on her face and what could that be? I don’t know. what do you get someone who has everything money can buy. My Mammy and my bodyguard Talon are the only family I have left, when my parents died I was only fifteen. They grew me up and showed me the ropes. So I’ll do anything to put a smile on that face. I entered the little gift shop at the back of the mall, “knacks” that’s the name of the store. The store is filled with all kinds of “Knick knacks”. My first thought was to get her a purse, but she has enough of those, heck she has one for every occasion. Lunch, brunch, interrogation. she doesn't need any more bags. I took my time searching through the store, it’s filled with ceramic art work, picture frames, they have wooden shelves , they even have handbags. “Excuse me, may I help you.” I heard a playful voice behind me. I guess she sensed that I was lost, or it could’ve been the confused look in my face that gave it away. “We’ll call if we need help.” Talon said. With his hand blocking her way. “Let her through, I really need the help.” I said to Talon. My right hand is now scratching away at my scalp. “I’m Vivienne Rose, how may I assist you today,” She said with a playful smile. “I’ve never seen you before, are you new here?” I asked. “You could say that, I started a couple of weeks ago.”she said. “We’ll Vivienne, I’m Marcel...” “Marcel Blanche, I know who you are, we all know who you are.”she said. “Ohh” “So, what can I help you with?” She asked. With her playful smile still very visible. “It’s my Grandmother's fiftieth birthday today, and I’d like to give her something that would put a smile on her face.”I said. “We have bags ,scarves ,ceramic art and lots more. I could show you if you like. “No something else, most of those things, she already has.” “Ok, well, it’s either a gift card or you're the best grandma pencil?” She said. “Seriously” “Yep, seriously”she said. “I’ll take them both then,” I said with a smile. She went from a playful smile to the look of wetting your pants. “Are you ok vivienne?” I asked. “Am… yes I’m fine, it’s just when you smiled I got a little scared.” She said. “I’m sorry, I seem to have that effect on people. Looks like I’ll have to practice some more.” I said, “You practice your smile?” She asked. With a little giggle at the end. “What is it that you find so funny, can’t a man practice his smile.” I asked. “Yes, that’s a very manly thing to do mr. Blanche.” She said. With her playful smile now visible again. “There we go you see, you are not scared anymore.” I said, And she chuckled. “Ok, would you like to write something on the card, or just leave it blank?” She asked. “Can you write something for me, I’m not a man of many words.” I said. Cautious of my smile this time. “You could smile if you want, I wouldn’t be scared I promise.” She said. So I smiled. “ I think you need to continue practicing.” She said. But her beautiful smile was very much visible. Her smile made my heart flutter ,my stomach turn, not in a bad way though and my cheeks felt hot all of a sudden. “Wait. Ami blushing?” I asked myself. “ Grown men don’t blush, you fool.” My inner voice answered back. “Here you go.” She said handing the card over to me. I opened it up and read what was written inside. “Dear Mamie Happy fiftieth birthday to you, you have always been such an inspiration in my life, an inspiration to do better and live better. You fill my life with love and happiness, beautiful memories that I’ll treasure forever. I hope today and every other day you’re on this earth will be filled with happiness. With love your grandson MarcelBlanche.” I smiled and placed the card back into the envelope. “Thank you, this is beautiful.” I said, Again, with a cautious smile. “So how do you like it here? Are you enjoying the job?” I asked. Making small conversation. “So far ,yea.” She replied. “That’s good,so am..” “Are you making small talk Mr. Blanche?” She asked. “How am I doing?” I asked. “Horrible.” She said laughing. But that face filled with laughter, turned to a face filled with horror, it’s like she’d seen a ghost. “,Marcel Blanche.” An unfamiliar voice called out to me. I held onto Vivienne's arm,and placed her behind me, as I slowly reached for the gun in my waist. Talon was nowhere in sight, not that it’s a problem, but there is an innocent in the store and I hate gun fights with innocent people around. “It's time to meet your family.”He said before blowing me a kiss. I became rigidly fixed in my position. There’s only one person in the world that blows me kisses, that person is my sister Claire and she’s dead. “Bang” body falls to the floor. And snapped me out of it. “ Are you ok sir, are you ok?”Talon asked. “I’m fine, Vivienne stuttered from behind me. I turned around and she stood there behind me with her hands together across her chest. “Are you ok?” I asked the obviously disoriented woman. “I’m fine.” You should leave just in case. She said. Talon interrupted; she’s right sir, we need to leave. We made our way to the car. “Did you see that talon?”I asked. “I saw it sir.” As we hit the freeway, I remembered Mammy's gift. “We have to go back to the mall talon.” I said, “Sir.” He paused. “I forgot Mammy's gift” “Grab the gift and get out, that's it,” Talon said. We got to the parking lot and I ran to the mall entrance. I saw Vivienne making her way to the manager’s office. “Vivienne” I called out to her. “What are you doing here sir, it’s not safe, you need to go”. She said. I point to the gift bag in her hand. “Ohh sorry” she said, handing the gift over to me. “You sure your fine.” I asked. “Yes, I'm fine.” She said. “That’s good.”I said. “It was a pleasure meeting you, Mr. Blanche, take care.” She said. As she slowly disappeared into the crowd. I entered the back of my heavily tinted Benz and made my way to my grandmother's place ************** “Happy birthday Mamie.” I said, placing a sweet kiss on her cheek. “You're late!” “I’m sorry Mamie, I had a little hold up. ohh this is for you” “Ohh, thank you my boy” “Your welcome” As I placed the wine glasses on the table, I heard a soft sniffle. “Thank you my boy.” she said, wiping her tears away.” it’s just a card, Mamie.” “Exactly, it’s not an expensive piece of sh.” “Mamie.” she rolled her eyes at me. “What’s this, world's best grandma pencil, I’ll remember this when I have to jab someone in the neck.” She said. “Mamie.” I said stopping her from forming her next sentence. “Talon, did you help him?” she asked Talon, who was already seated at the table. “Why couldn’t I pick it out myself ?” I asked. “Boy you got me a bedazzled gun, last year someone helped you.” She said, “Now Mamie it's the assistant at the shop that helped him.” Talon said. “She has good taste,” Mamie replied with a laugh. I sat back and watched as she and Talon enjoyed each other’s company. This is what I wish my life was like. Happy , full of joy and laughter, but it’s far from that ,it’s filled with blood. Rivers of it. And that’s just what it is.I’m Marcel Blanche the head of my family I run the Blanche mafia and that’s all there’ll ever be to my name. Unless life gives me lemons to make lemonade, I’ll be my ruthless, cold-hearted self.
