Chapter 6: Nicole

887 Words
-Nicole’s P.O.V- The next day I woke up in the same motel Connor and I booked. I turned and found Connor still asleep so I looked under the covers and found myself still naked. I took a deep breath, then got up to find my dress. Luckily, it was still okay and he didn’t rip any of my clothes like he did the last he and I met. I put them on quickly, fixed my makeup and my hair, and left. I thought of leaving a small note or something for Connor when he waked up, but he knew what this was so feelings were the least of my concerns. Instead, I left money for him to pay for the room. I got out of the motel and called a cab on my way outside. I waited a little bit before the car arrived and got in giving the driver my home address. ******** When I got reached my home, the housekeeper opened the door and welcomed me inside. “Ms. Smith, I was worried about you.” She greeted. Janine was a little old. You could clearly see the wrinkles on her face and the gray strands of hair on top of her head, but she still functioned like a machine and had the heart of a baby. I loved her. “Thank you, Janine. Where are my parents?” I smiled reassuring her. “Having breakfast in the dining room.” She showed me with her hand where they were. “Thanks.” I bowed my head before going to my room to take a shower and clean up not wanting them to see me in the state that I was. After the shower, I dried my hair fast and wore something comfortable, then went to my parents. “Nicole. Nice of you to join us.” My mother said. “Morning, mom.” I kissed her cheek before greeting my father the same way. ‘Where were you last night?” she asked knowing the answer. “Out,” I answered then dug into the plate filled with food in front of me. “Out meaning, out with a guy or out with one of your friends?” she questioned. “Both, just at different times,” I answered truthfully. “Nicole, what if one of the reporters saw you? What if today’s headline was ‘Robert Smith’s daughter, seen with some guy somewhere.’ Don’t you think we have enough to deal with?” she asked. “I wasn’t with ‘someone’ I was with Connor,” I said wishing invisibility was a thing. “Connor? You’re still meeting with him?” her tone changed. “Mom, it’s not like there’s something between us. We just meet occasionally and that’s it.” I tried explaining. “I don’t want you to meet him ‘occasionally’ anymore. I want you to focus on your studies. Next year you’ll be going to law school and after that, you’ll take over the firm.” She spoke. “Our partners are moving from London back to the US and merging both our firms. So you know, we might have our family names side by side on the wall, but we are still two very independent law firms. I called your principal and found out you are attending architecture lectures. I had him change your studies.” My father told me. “But Dad I- “I started. “No buts. Mr. Wilson’s son is already in law school and I heard he’s very brilliant. I wouldn’t want them to surpass us. You will be an intern as of next year and when you graduate you will take my place as managing partner, as will Liam take his father’s place in their firm. Am I clear?” he ordered. My father is a very sweet and kind man, but when it comes to the firm or work, nothing can change his mind. I loved him very much, he took me in when my biological parents didn’t want me and raised me with my mother. I owed them my life, which is why I didn’t disagree when they offered to make me the head of the firm in the future. “Okay.” I nodded and continued eating. ******** I was still a baby when my biological parents left me. To this day, I don’t know anything about my parents nor have I searched. This is part of the reason why I agreed to become a lawyer. I wanted to have connections and search for them. I wanted to know where I came from. The other reason was to thank Robert and Amelia for adopting me and raising me as their own. I’m the second oldest of three. The doctors thought Amelia was too old and couldn’t have any more children since it would be too risky so, they decided to adopt me. They treated me the same way they treated my older brother, Michael. Then a year after my adoption, my little sister was born, Erica, but that didn’t stop them from loving me the same. I literally owed them my life and for that, I was willing to do anything to give back what they gave me. To give back for gifting the greatest thing I lost. Family.
