Hello, my names Wren

Opal- Then How was it that everyone here was so big? And not just big as in tall either but big in every way. Every person I saw towered over me. And not one of them smiled as I made my way into the great stone castle behind my father. They even made my father look small and he was the biggest person I knew. But I knew the reason. My father was only half dragon. The men here , these warriors were full dragons. And as powerful and deadly as the stories said. “Hurry Opal.” My fathers words were sharp and I realised to late that I had let my feet drag and I was lagging behind. A thing that wasn’t safe with some many men around, who were eyeing me with open interest. “Yes father.” I caught up with him quickly , keeping my head down and my eyes lowered. I knew why they were all staring. They sensed my fathers dragon and expected me to have one of my own. As soon as they realised I couldn’t shift they would either lose interest or shun me totally. Just like my father had. Which was why I was here. He had no time for a faulty daughter, so I had been sold. I was to serve the castle as a maid. At least I hoped it would be as a servant and I wouldn’t be forced to do anything… unsavoury. “She doesn’t smell of….” “No dragon.” “Urgh.” Tears pricked my eyes as the whispers started. And I let my dirty blonde hair fall over my face. I had expecting it but it still hurt. It always hurt. All I wanted was to find my place. “Opal Hurry…” my fathers voice was sharp and I stumbled over my long skirts. I didn’t have a chance to right myself as the stony ground rushed up towards my face. But the pain didn’t come. Strong arms righted me, settling me back on my feet gently and I looked up into the most handsome face I had ever seen. “Hello.” His voice was low and deep , dark almost . It was the complete opposite to the bright smile that lit up his beautiful face. “I’m Wren.” Opal -Now “Wren….” I took a step back as he placed my down on my eight inch heels in the soaked parking lot. Crossing my arms about my chest I shivered. I had sensed him. Before I had gone out on that stage but I always seemed to sense him when I was sad and lonely. The memory of him was the only thing that kept me company these days. And when I had spotted him? My heart had stopped because it wasn’t possibly that he was here. Wren had always been my knight in shining armour , when we were young he always came when I had needed him but that had been years ago. He hadn’t rescued me in centuries. I had been all alone. What ever brought Wren here , it wasn’t to help me. He had always been the councils man through and through. “What are you doing here…”I gave a little scream as he took a step towards me. Flinching back as if from a strike and he froze. His eyes narrowing as he took in my half cowed form. “It’s just my jacket Opal.” My name from his lips… I had missed it so much. He always said it like I was something precious that he had to treasure. “You’re going to freeze out here in that.” His eyes wandered up my near naked body and the blush that flooded me would have warmed me ten times over. It wasn’t even that he had never seen me naked before. But I had been a young woman then. My body tight and smooth. His jacket was heavy as he slipped it over my shoulders. But it was warm and it smelt like him. “Thank you.” He opened his mouth to say something and then shut it with a snap. “My car is over there.” He pointed and I frowned. So this was how it was going to be? Him being cold as he took me to my death. “Let’s get you out of the rain before you catch your death.” “What does it matter how I die Wren? I’m as good as dead anyway if you take me back to them… Wren please.” I caught his sleeve and he stared at it for several long seconds and then he shook it off like it he couldn’t stand me touching him. “Please Wren , just let me go. I’ll disappear . No one will ever…” “No.” His voice was harsh. “I can’t do that Opal. Now get in the car. We need to get out of here.”
