Mom's Debt

1285 Words
Angry and embarrassed, Melissa walked back in, slamming the door shut and storming into her room. She lowered herself to the floor, her long ginger hair splayed about her. Her day was suddenly taking a u-turn and she had no idea what was happening. She was sure she had heard one of the men say he wanted her but who? Who had made that statement and what on earth had he meant by he wanted her? It has only been for a split second but Melissa had seen a smile on the face of the younger man while she walked back into the house. She had seen a smile on his face. Was he grinning at the way her mother had humiliated her or what? Why had he smiled? Also, she had seen how her mother's eyes had twitched. The whole event was just so strange and the more Melissa racked her brain for an answer, the more confused she got. But her mother soon walked into her room without knocking and her angry voice filled the air. "Why don't you ever listen? Why don't you ever listen to me? None of this would have happened if you just listened to me!" Her mother's voice broke at the end and Melissa's eyes narrowed when she saw the state her mother was in. Lucy's cheeks were stained with tears and her hazel eyes were swollen from so many tears. "Mom." Melissa's voice was thick with heavy emotion. "You should have just listened to me and stayed indoors. Now he wants you and I don't know what to do cus I can't lose you. You should have just stayed with your Aunt Myra. He wouldn't have found you here if you did. Why did you return to haunt me?" Lucy was now wailing and Melissa's lips quivered, tears dropping from her eyes as she watched her mother. "I don't understand, mom. What's going on? Who are they? Why were they here?" "I owe his father a large sum of money and he's here to collect it. I don't know why he decided to come himself. Usually, Eddie comes for it. Eddie is so compassionate and he understands that I'm trying. But Jordan came for it instead. I don't know why he did but he - " "Mom!" Melissa yelled, stopping her mother from rambling further. "I still don't understand. Who is Jordan? What are you talking about?" "The Gomez family!" Lucy yelled. "Don't tell me you've forgotten them so soon." "The Gomez family? Gomez as in Gomez group of companies? Gomez as in Gomez farm, wine company, bread factory, a milk factory and many more? The Gomez farmers?" Melissa couldn't believe her ears. How did her mother get entangled with the Gomez for their heir to come all the way to see her? "Yes! Gomez as in Gomez group of companies. I took a loan from the Gomez family, a huge sum of money and I need more time to pay it back. Do you understand now?" Lucy snapped in exasperation. "Wow! Well, that shouldn't be a problem." Melissa shook her head. "We'll ask for more time and we will work to raise the money. Is this why you locked me indoors? Come on, mum!" "Melissa." Her mother looked exasperated but Melissa wasn't done with her questions. "And why on earth are you just telling me about your loan? I can't believe you hid this from me. If I hadn't left Aunt Myra to come here, I would never have known and you'd be here, facing this s**t alone, because you owe some amount of money. How much do you owe, by the way? We'll pay the money." "You don't understand, Lisa!" Lucy shook her head at her daughter. "There is no more time! Can't you see it? If it was this easy as you claim, I would have paid my debt a long time ago but it isn't. The money I borrowed is huge. I wanted to use it to expand my boutique but I lost all the money before I could even get started. I got swindled by some guy. I thought. . .I thought. . ." Lucy's eyes welled up once again. "He promised to double the money." "What the hell, mum?" Melissa couldn't control herself. "Why the f**k will you do that with a loan?" "I swear, I have seen him do it before. I felt he could double mine so I can achieve more. You can't blame me, Melissa. I was desperate." "And look where your desperation got you to, huh, mum?" "You shouldn't have returned." Lucy shook her head and Melissa's frown deepened. "Of course, I should have and I'm glad I did. Aunt Myra's home sucks and I'm sick of her treating me like s**t all the time. Why should I keep up with all that when I have a home? It's been ten years now. Don't you think it's time to return or do you loathe my presence that much?" "No!" Lucy shook her head. "I sent you to Cumbria to protect you. It was a decision I and your father made. We didn't want anyone to know our daughters' whereabouts. We didn't want anyone using you against us. This is something we have always avoided and now it's happening." "Always avoided? Don't tell me this isn't your first time taking loans from the Gomez family?" "It isn't. Your father once took a loan from them and others to save his company but he still got bankrupt and now that he's gone, the entire burden is on my shoulder. This is why the Gomez refused to offer another loan when I'm yet to pay the first but I promised I'd pay but I can't. . . " Lucy's eyes dropped to the floor but she soon looked up, like she just remembered something. "Look, enough of this plain chatter. You have to return to Cumbria immediately." She informed, walking to Melissa's wardrobe to pull down all the clothes she had just hung that morning. "I don't want him seeing you again." "Stop it, mum!" Melissa jumped to her feet. "You're making this all too confusing for me. I've told you we'll pay your debt. I'm gonna follow you to that damn Gomez house and we'll strike a deal with them." "He just said he wanted you. Do you know what that means? Jordan Gomez said he wanted you and God knows when that little devil wants something, he goes all out to get it. You're very precious to me and I don't want that asshole taking you away from me. He's such a cold-hearted person. He won't stop till he takes you away from me. That's why you gotta leave now." "Spare me all that, mum. This is Goddamn 21st century. There's not a thing he can do." "Listen to me, Lisa!" "I'm not going back." Melissa shook her head vehemently. How could her mother be asking her to leave for some idiotic person? She would never. "Quit acting stubborn. Just do what I say!" "I don't want to. I'm not gonna leave my poor mum all alone here to face those devils. I saw what they did. Those men are evil, especially that man on the horse He derives pleasure from others' pain. He's sick in the head. Crazy!" "You're right!" Her mother nodded. "Jordan Gomez is crazy that's why you should leave. Stop wasting so much time. Just pack and leave." Lucy threw the clothes she had pulled from the wardrobe on the bed and grabbed a bag. "I'm not going anywhere, mom!" Melissa grabbed the bag from her mother. "Nothing you say is gonna stop me."
