4 Confrontation

Rena was at a loss for words. Lucy's friend was loud enough that her question drew attention from a few of the cafe's patrons.   “How dare you try and compete with Lucy,” the woman continued. “You are too ugly to even try!”   “Gina, my dear cousin, she isn't worth your breath,” Lucy added.   However, Gian's tirade didn't cease. “Everyone should know what kind of mother you are, bringing your son on a date with another man!” Her voice got louder with each accusation and insult, and soon people around Rena began to gossip.   “She looks like she is in college, but she already has a son...”   “Is she a single mother? At that age? How unfortunate.”   “I hope she doesn't have to strip in order to provide for her child.”   Rena gritted her teeth as she listened to the judgments that people made about her, before she stared daggers at Lucy and Gina. They were pretty girls, no doubt, but they were also the kind who wasn't naturally pretty. They needed a lot of makeup in order to look good, which was where Rena had the upper hand. She knew she looked beautiful both in and out of makeup.   “You aren't afraid of setting a bad example for your son?” Gina spat.   With a sigh, Rena bent down to speak with the boy. He looked to be around three years old with blonde hair, and his face was chubby. “Sweetheart, do you know me?”   The boy stared at her for a few seconds, before he shook his head. He began to cry after he realized his mistake, and Rena felt sorry for him. She reached into her purse and pulled out a tissue, and started to dry his tears. “It's okay, we will find your mom,” she said soothingly.   “Oh my goodness! Jacob, there you are!” a woman exclaimed as she ran over to the little boy. “Ma'am, I am so sorry about this.”   “No worries. I'm glad he found you,” Rena said sincerely. She noticed that the boy's mother also wore a similar green skirt, which would explain how Jacob had gotten so confused.   The mother bent down and scooped Jacob up, before the two of them left the cafe.   The people who were gossiping about Rena all stopped once they realized the misunderstanding.   Rena walked right up to Gina and Lucy. She was at the end of her rope with this whole situation, and she felt the need to stand up for herself.   “What the hell do you want?” Lucy spat.
