Chapter Two

He watched her for her short commute; watched as she looked at her phone. He couldn’t help but wonder just what she was reading that would make the blood rush to her cheeks, causing such a pretty blush. She lifted her head up, seemingly lost in thought for a moment.  White teeth nibbling on her bottom lip delicately.  Shaking her head as she pressed a button on the side of her phone before slipping it into her bag and pulling out a small compact.  He watched as she checked her makeup, touching up her light pink lipstick and using a bit of pressed powder on her nose. He wondered what she looked like with her lipstick smeared from being kissed in the way he wanted to kiss her.  Or if her auburn hair felt as silky as it looked.  He could almost imagine how her hair would look with his fingers tangling into it.     He watched her slip the compact and lipstick back into her bag and pull out a piece of gum. He could smell the mint as she unwrapped it and popped it into her mouth.  She stood getting ready to exit the subway car; he stood, moving closer. He didn’t want to lose her in the morning commuters. *** Abby was oblivious to the man following her. She moved closer to the doors, hoping not to get pushed into them or groped.  People on the subway could be super weird. She looked down at her watch and smiled. Abby would arrive a little early and that made her feel a little less anxious. She ran a hand over her hair, smoothing down any flyaways as the doors slid open; stepping out with the crowd quickly walking towards the stairs to exit the dingy subway station. She breathed in deeply when she got out onto the sidewalk; the air wasn’t as fresh as it was in the country, but she wouldn’t change it for anything.  Abby let her eyes adjust to the bright sun as she started moving forward towards the big buildings. She pulled her phone out to check the address one more time before heading forward at a good pace.  It should only take her about ten minutes to get to the building. Watching all the people around her as she walked, still not used to the crowds. Sometimes walking down the sidewalk in the city could feel overwhelming, the noise, the people, the sights.  It could feel very chaotic, and she hoped she would get used to it with time. *** He lost her, where could she have gone?  Searching the crowd, looking for her auburn hair and emerald green shirt, but not finding her.   “f**k!”  He swore to himself, causing several people passing him to stop and stare at him.   He shrugged his shoulders, hoping that he would run into her again as he headed towards his morning meeting. At least Owen wouldn’t be pissed at him now.  The bloodsucker was always on his case about something. This time it was about getting rid of their newest plaything. The girl they had been seeing was getting too attached for his liking.  He hated when that happened, sure he enjoyed sharing lovers with his best friend and he couldn’t imagine not doing everything with him and that included sharing lovers, sharing businesses. Granted, he had his own little things on the side.  But the important stuff was shared with his friend and lover. The tall, sleek building came into view, Collins and Walker Pharmaceuticals was a well-known company, they worked on vaccines and getting them to third world countries; they were involved in a lot of charity work.  It was a company that he was proud to be a part of; he smiled as he got closer, not really paying attention to what was going on around him because he could smell her again, her sweet scent making him feel high.  He closed his eyes, breathing in deeply when he bumped into someone. “Oh, I’m so sorry.”  She said to him, her voice was light and made him feel happy just hearing it.  “I was just looking at my phone making sure I’m in the right place and I wasn’t sure.  So I was just double-checking. Sorry, I’m babbling.” She said smiling shyly at him. “No problem kitten.”  He said, his voice low and deep, “Are you new here?”   “Yes, well maybe.  I hope so,” She answered pushing her phone into her bag, “I’ve got an interview here today and I really hope it goes well.”  She smoothed her hair back as she looked up at him. He stared into her eyes; he had never seen such blue eyes before in his life.  They reminded of the clear ocean waters he had seen as a child.  She was looking at him strangely. He must have been quiet for too long as he drank her in. “I wouldn’t worry too much about that, kitten.  I’ve got a good feeling.” He smiled at her, moving towards the door and holding it open for her. Abby nodded her thanks to him as she went inside. She looked around at the sleek modern interior everything looked so nice and bright.  Looking around at all of the men and women in their expensive-looking business suits, she suddenly felt very underdressed.   The man that had held the door open smiled at her as he pointed her towards the receptionist’s desk.  She smiled at him, taking in his jeans and black t-shirt. She couldn’t help but wonder what he was doing here. She greeted the receptionist, “Hi I’m Abby Jones, I’m here for an interview.”  She said giving the woman a bright smile. The receptionist looked up from the computer screen, her eyes immediately brightening up as they laid on the man beside Abby.   She looked back at Abby, “Interviews are taking place on floor two, the elevators are right over there.”  She said pointing to the other end of the lavish lobby.   Abby nodded her thanks at the woman and smiled at the dark-haired man, curious as to why he was still beside her.  She wondered if he was also here for the interviews. “Good morning Sir,” the receptionist said in a breathy voice, Abby rolled her eyes as she turned to head towards the elevators. It must have been because he was handsome. Which he was, dark hair with a bit of wave, as if he had just run his fingers through it. He was muscular and tall.  She was 5 foot 6 inches, but he easily towered over her, and his eyes. They were green, like fresh plants sprouting in the spring.   But still bad customer service was so not cool. The receptionist was the first person most people talk to when they came in and it left a sour taste in her mouth at being brushed off like that.  Abby looked down as she walked to the elevator.  When she got to the panel at the wall, she raised her hand to press the button when a rough calloused hand brushed against hers, pressing the button for her.  She glanced over, seeing it was the man still beside her. She wondered why he didn’t stay to flirt with the receptionist.   “Are you interviewing here as well?”  She asked, making small talk as they waited for the elevator.   “Something like that,” he smirked as he watched her.  “I’ve got a meeting.” He said as he placed his arm in the open elevator, leading her in, his hand resting on the small of her back. “Oh, do you work here?”  She said walking into the elevator. He stood close to her, much closer than she was used to. She could smell the clean scent of his cologne, the smell of spearmint and rosemary tickling her senses.
