Chapter Three

1791 Words
He knew he was being creepy, but damn, she smelled so good.  He breathed in her scent. Being in this small, closed-in space with her had him longing to pull against his chest and kiss her.  She smelled even better up close and he was fighting with himself; he wanted to spin her against the wall, tease her until she was begging for him to f**k her.   He watched as she glanced over at him; she nibbled her lower lip nervously.  If he did kiss her, Owen would be pissed, they always went after a lover together.  He wanted her; he knew at that moment as she looked up at blue eyes hidden behind thick-framed glasses. The elevator dinged announcing them to be on the floor she needed to be at for her interview.   “This is me.”  She said, stepping forward. “I’ll see you around, kitten.”  He said with a smirk. Holding the elevator as he watched her walk down the hallway, he listened as her heels clicked across the pale marble tile floors. He leaned back letting the elevator car head up to the top floor, god this would be a long day.  At least he knew who would be Owen’s new secretary, if he had a say in it, and he very much did. *** Abby walked down the hallway thinking about the man in the elevator, she realized that she didn’t even know his name.  She tried to shrug it off, he probably thought she was some random weirdo, but she couldn’t help but stare at him, he was gorgeous.  She sighed as she headed towards the HR department. She went in and gave the woman waiting behind an expensive-looking desk her name. The blonde woman looked at her and directed her towards an office. Abby sat down, grabbing the gum wrapper out of her purse she spit her gum.  She tucked the chewed gum and wrapper back into her bag; she hadn’t seen a trashcan in the room. A pair of doors opened and a young man walked into the room, his blonde hair styled neatly and gelled back into place.  His eyes were cold and calculating. His suit was well-tailored, and his leather shoes were probably worth more money than she had ever seen. “Abby?”  He asked, looking her over. “Yes Sir, that’s me.”  Abby said, trying to keep up her bright and cheery smile. It wasn’t easy with the stern face staring at her. “I’m Andrew Harris, I’m the vice president of operations and I’m ready to interview you now.”  He said. “Oh, um ok.”  Abby said trying to hide her nervousness, “Awesome.”  She added nervously. “You sound surprised it’s me.”  He said raising an eyebrow. “Well, I, I, I wasn’t expecting to be interviewed by someone so high up within the company.  The job description just said for an assistant.” Abby explained, her cheeks reddening in embarrassment over her stuttering. “Well, the position is actually to be Mr. Owen Walker’s personal assistant and I take that position very seriously.  He’s a very important man, our CEO, and I need to make sure you’re competent enough to handle working with him.” Andrew said with a raised eyebrow, almost like he was talking to a child. “I totally understand then,”  Abby said confidently to Andrew, she just had to get this job and then she would have one less worry to deal with.  Working with Mr. Walker would be so cool, if not busy and demanding. She knew that she could handle it. “Now, let’s get started.”  Andrew said sitting across from her, “At Collins and Walker Pharmaceuticals we are one of the foremost leaders in creating vaccines and working towards curing some of the worst diseases on the planet.  Why do you want to work here?”  He asked in an almost bored voice.  Abby could tell he was proud of the company he worked for but she was beginning to feel like she wouldn’t be getting the job by his attitude towards her. “I love the work that Collins and Walker do the charitable benefits that they work on and donate to.  I’ve read all about the volunteer work that they do in impoverished countries, the green energy, the way that they help get clean water to countries in need, it’s a company that I would love to be a part of.  I really admire that this company strives to work towards a greater good.” She answered honestly, her voice clear and crisp. “I feel like this company isn’t just about making money, that it’s a company that’s really trying to help people,” Abby added after thinking for a moment longer. “That’s a good answer, Owen and Mr. Collins would like that.”  He smirked, writing down some notes on her file. The door swung open and both Andrew and Abby turned to face the door. A man walked into the room.  His dark gray suit was obviously a high-end designer made piece.  It hugged his muscled biceps perfectly; he strolled into the room casually taking a seat beside Abby.  His violet eyes taking in Abby as he sat beside her, there was intelligence in his calculating gaze as he smiled slowly at her. “Owen, Sir, I wasn’t expecting you.”  Andrew said looking at his boss. “My meeting was over quicker than I thought it would be.”  He said, his voice sent shivers down Abby’s spine, it was gravelly and sexy.  “Is this the new applicant?” He asked. Andrew paused, looking from Mr. Walker to Abby, “It is Sir, I’ve just started her interview.”  He answered. “I’ll take over her interview from here.”  He smiled at Andrew. “Of course, sir.”  Andrew said as he stood up, he handed the file to Mr Walker along with his notes.  He walked to the door, looking back at Mr Walker, his face unreadable to Abby. She didn’t know either man well enough to know how they were feeling, but she had a gut feeling that Andrew was upset about Mr Walker taking over the interview. Violet eyes turned to look at Abby, she had never been stared at so intently in her life.  It felt like his eyes were burning through her; she felt her mouth grow dry as she clasped her hands together in her lap. “Abby Jones?”  He said, she fought down a shiver.  The way he said her name was almost like a purr or a growl, she wasn’t sure which, but she felt like an animal being hunted. She shook her head, trying to break free of the fog her mind seemed to be in, “Yes Sir.”  She answered him, her voice sounding slightly scratchy to her own ears. She cleared her throat and answered him a little clearer. “Tell me Abby, what do you want?”  He asked with a slight smirk, his eyebrow lifted as he waited for her to answer. “Um, you, um, do you mean why do I want this job?”  She asked unsure. “I didn’t ask you why you wanted this job, I want to know what you want?”  He asked, his smirk deepening into a smile. “I want something I haven’t experienced before and I think I can find it within your company.”  She answered, unsure of why he wanted to know that question. “Really?”  He asked, smiling mischievously at her.   “I’m sorry if that wasn’t the answer you were expecting Sir, I’m trying to be honest.”  She said nervously, her hands twisting in her lap. “I moved to the city to experience new things, and I know I couldn’t do that if I stayed where I was before.  Most of the girls I went to high school with are already getting married and starting families, I wanted more than that. I want to make a difference.”   “I can relate.”  He smiled. “I mean there isn’t anything wrong with what they’re doing, it just isn’t for me.  I want at the end of the day to say that I lived my life to the fullest.” She quickly added. Mr Walker looks down on the file in his hands, Abby’s resume, and the notes Andrew had made earlier.  “You don’t have much experience.”   “I’m a quick learner and everyone’s got to start somewhere.  I just thought it would be under someone else.” She answered honestly. “That’s true, give me three words that describe you.”  He said not looking up at her. “Loyal, ambitious, and passionate.  I think those would all be great things that I could show you given time.”  Abby smiled. “Good, ambition and loyalty are something I value very much.”  He answered, “In an employee.”   “This job will be challenging, are you comfortable running errands for me?”  “Yes Sir, I have got no problem doing that.”  Abby said smiling. She had a feeling that she would be getting the job.   “Are you good with handling things quietly and discreetly?”  He asked, raising an eyebrow at her as he sat down the file.   “I can keep secrets.”  Abby nodded. “Are you comfortable working late?  I work a lot of nights and overnights.”  Mr Walker asked. “I’ve got no problems with working late or even overnight.”  She answered. “That’s good, anything else I should know about?  Anything that might get in the way work?” He asked, standing up. “No Sir.”  Abby says moving to stand. “No husband or boyfriend?”  Mr Walker asked, looking at her over his shoulder as he moved to the door. “Not right now, Sir.”  She answered following him out the door. He paused before looking at her, “Good, you’re hired.”  He said with a smile.
