Pride of an Alpha

1. And so it begins (once again)

The moonlight was faintly shining through the windows where the curtains met. The calling through his mind link had woken him from his light slumber but he didn’t mind. Sleep had been a fickle friend for a long time now and he couldn’t recall the last time he’d slept through a whole night. Well, he could, but he suppressed that memory due to the hurt it brought with it. 

    “Alpha, did you hear me?”

The voice vibrated in his head and he took in a deep breath. 

    “Yes, I heard you. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

He slowly sat up to get some clothes when the figure beside him began to stir. The brown locks falling on milky skin nearly tricked his mind to believe that the woman was another, however, only nearly. Her scent gave it away. He pulled on his pants and grabbed a shirt when he heard a soft voice speak from the bed. 

    “Are you leaving?”

He looked at the woman. Her eyes looked sad and he almost pitied her. Almost. He pulled on his shirt and forced himself to seem caring. 

    “I am. I have just received some news that I have to attend to. You can stay and sleep but I won’t be able to come back.”

He turned around and assembled the rest of his stuff before he moved towards the door. 

    “Well, call me if you ever want to get some comfort.”

He looked at the woman one last time. She tried to look seductive but failed as he could see the desperation in her eyes. 

    “Perhaps I will.”

He walked out the door and made his way through the hallways. The scent of the woman lingered on him which made him frown. It wasn’t her fault, she had just done as most women did. She had hoped that she would be the one to win the affections of the Alpha, but she wouldn’t be. No woman would make him feel anything more than the faintest feeling of lust. No woman except one. The frown on his face was just a vague expression compared to the feelings inside him; anger, regret, heartache...

He soon stepped into his office and made his way towards the conference room. A dozen men rose as he entered the room. He sat down and looked at Kendrick.

    “Report.”

Kendrick gave a nod as the men sat down again. 

    “We believe we’ve found something interesting, Alpha. A sighting of some sorts.”

For the first time in ages, Logan felt a smile creep through. 

    “Perfect. Let's begin.”
