Chapter 1
The air in the boardroom was stiff and formal. It did not calm the fire that was burning inside Dr. Aurora Vance. Her eyes, sharp and unwavering, moved from one face to another looking at the members of the Sterling Conglomerates board. They knew her as the CEO of NovaGen Solutions, a company that was growing very fast. They were there to hear her proposal to buy their Bio-Agri division.. They did not know the real Aurora Vance, the woman behind the perfectly tailored suit.
"Gentlemen " Aurora started, her voice low and smooth "NovaGen is ready to pay thirty percent than the market value for the entire Bio-Agri division. This includes all the patents, research and existing infrastructure. Our offer is final. Will only be on the table for forty-eight hours."
The room fell silent. Thirty percent was a high price and it seemed like either desperation or confidence. Aurora allowed a small smile to appear on her lips.. It was not because of either of those things. It was a declaration of war.
Her presentation was delivered with precision pointing out the weaknesses of the Bio-Agri division. She knew these details well as they were part of her own legacy, which was deliberately ignored and mismanaged by Jasper Sterling. Every slide was like a strike, every statistic a criticism. The room was uncomfortable as they were not just being bought out but also exposed.
Jasper Sterling, who usually had a confident air about him, was sitting still at the head of the table. His expensive suit seemed to be hanging on his shoulders. He had not expected this. No one had. NovaGen Solutions had appeared on the scene two years ago and now it was demanding a piece of his empire. His eyes, which usually dismissed people, were flickering with a mix of annoyance and alarm as Aurora dismantled his division with logic.
"Dr. Vance " Jasper finally spoke up trying to regain his authority "this offer is very aggressive. We have built Bio-Agri into a part of Sterling Conglomerates. It is not for sale."
Aurora met his gaze, her eyes cold and hard. "Mr. Sterling, your division is falling apart. Your latest report shows a decline of seven point two percent in Bio-Agri revenue because of the failure of Project Ceres. A project that was supposed to be your big breakthrough using genetic markers for drought-resistant crops."
Jasper flinched. Project Ceres was his project. It was a personal failure that he had tried to cover up. How did she know about it? His gaze narrowed, trying to find a flicker of recognition in her face.. Aurora Vance was a stranger, a beautiful and terrifying stranger.
"Our research " Aurora continued, her voice without emotion "shows that Project Ceres failed because of flaws in its sequencing leading to unstable plant hybrids. NovaGen has the sequencing that guarantees stability and yields. Without it Project Ceres will keep failing."
The silence in the room was deafening. The board members were exchanging glances. Aurora had just shown that she knew their failures and also had the solution. It seemed like she had the key they were missing.
"You have twenty-four hours Mr. Sterling," Aurora concluded, standing up from her seat. Deliberate. "Consider your options. We prefer an acquisition but NovaGen is not afraid of a hostile takeover. This is a courtesy call."
With that she turned around. Left the boardroom leaving behind a room full of stunned and defeated men and a furious Jasper Sterling, whose carefully built world was starting to fall apart.
Aurora found herself back in her jet an hour later, the city lights of Manhattan shining below her. She allowed herself a small sigh of relief. The first shot had been fired.. The satisfaction was short-lived, replaced by the familiar pain in her chest.
She closed her eyes. The memories flooded back. The sharp pain, the ceiling of the operating room, the frantic voices of nurses growing distant. "We're losing her." And the doctor's grave faced his words echoing in her mind: "I am very sorry we couldn't save the baby."
Aurora was alone, her body a battlefield, her soul a gaping wound. While she was lying in the hospital her world collapsing Jasper was in Aspen building snowmen with another woman. His daughter, Elara was calling him "Daddy,". She was calling another woman "Mama Sienna." The innocent voice of Elara was like a dagger, a confirmation of her worthlessness.
The memories brought clarity. The sacrifices she had made: her career as a scientist, her research, her dignity. All of these were given up for Jasper, who did not appreciate her. The miscarriage should have been her end. It was her beginning. It carved away the pieces of the naive and loving woman she used to be and forged Aurora Vance. The pain had not broken her, it had made her stronger.
She opened her eyes looking at her reflection in the jet window. The woman staring back was a stranger, yet familiar. This Aurora was a masterpiece of self-creation built from the pieces of her past. Every dollar she earned, every acquisition she made, every move she took was a step towards this moment. Towards dismantling Jasper Sterling, brick by brick.
Her encrypted phone chimed, a message, from an unknown source. The message read: "Impressive opening, Dr. Vance. The lion has noticed the predator in his savanna. Expect a call.. J.T."
Aurora's breath caught, a flicker of surprise crossing her face. J.T. Julian Thorne, the billionaire everyone feared. He was watching her. He was making his move. The phone chimed again. Aurora stared at the screen, her heart pounding. Julian Thorne was not just watching, he was calling. She took a breath, steeling herself and pressed "Accept.”
