Nellie had believed her mate bond to be unbreakable.

She had lived in bliss at Ethan’s side, the young Alpha who had marked her as his Luna, promising her the moon, the stars, and every tender promise in between. Until the afternoon she opened the door to their bedroom—and found Serene, the Beta and Ethan’s childhood confidante, wrapped around him with shameless intimacy.

“Ethan,” her voice trembled, “how could you?”

Ethan’s golden eyes darkened with guilt, but his words shattered her world.

“Nellie, you’ll always be my Luna, my true mate. But Serene… she’s hurting, she needs me this way. Can’t you accept this, for the sake of the pack?”

It’s impossible for an omega to attract an Alpha, but I did it. And not only that, but that very night—while I stood beside him as a nurse during the surgery for his magical wounds, the kind that couldn’t heal naturally—we discovered we were mates. It happened at the moment he hovered between life and death. His body was badly injured and his vital signs were failing. But by chance—or perhaps the Goddess’s intervention—I had to move closer to him while holding the blood transfusion bag. The moment I did, the monitor tracking his heart rate stabilized. Everyone turned to look at me. “I want you to take two steps back, nurse,” the head surgeon ordered. I stepped away. Immediately, the monitors went wild again, beeping loudly. I moved closer without waiting for anyone to say a word. The machines steadied once more. “I don’t know what the explanation is,” said the surgeon, “but the nurse must stay beside the patient at all times. Prepare a room and make sure she doesn’t leave his side.” Everyone nodded. “The life of our pack’s Alpha depends on you, nurse,” the surgeon added before leaving. “I hope you understand the responsibility in your hands.” I was taken to the best room in the hospital. The Luna entered soon after to check on her son, ignoring my presence entirely. For her, an omega was no more important than a vase sitting on a nightstand. A sound made us both turn. “Mother?” We looked toward the bed. Ethan—Alpha Ethan—was waking up. “Mate,” he said when he saw me. “My mate.” His eyes, his face, his soul overflowed with joy—pure, overwhelming joy—and in that moment, I felt something new awaken inside me. “Mate,” I whispered. “You’re my mate.” “I am,” he said softly. “And you are mine.” That explained why I had to be by his side during surgery. “What the hell is going on here?” the Luna shouted, snapping me out of my daze. I had even forgotten she was there. My emotions had overwhelmed everything else. “What is the meaning of this? ‘Mate’? What are you talking about, son?” “Mother, I…” he rubbed his forehead with his free hand, “I just found my mate. It’s her. This girl. Isn’t that wonderful?” The Luna looked at me the way one might glare at a despised enemy. “Her? Your mate? But she’s—she’s just a simple omega! A common nurse! A nobody! Tell me this is a sick joke!” “Do you think I care about any of that, Mother? She could be the weakest, most humble human in existence and I still wouldn’t care. She’s my mate. That’s all that matters.” The news shook the entire Moon’s Fang pack—and even caused a stir in other packs. It was one of the rare instances in history where an Alpha mated with an omega. The wedding was arranged quickly—not just because Ethan and I were excited to celebrate, to mark each other, and to unleash our happiness—but also because the pack needed it. “You look so beautiful I feel like running off to marry the first guy I see,” said Serena, Ethan’s Beta and best friend since they attended the most prestigious secondary school in the pack. “It’s a dream come true, isn’t it?” I noticed a bitter edge to Serena’s voice, even though she tried to sound sweet and attentive. “Um…” I dared to say, “I know about your relationship. That you both once thought you might be mates.” I bit my lip immediately, because I saw it—the flicker of pain across Serena’s face. “Oh. Ethan told you?” I nodded. Ever since we recognized each other as mates, Ethan and I had shared a lot about our pasts. It wasn’t common for an Alpha to have a female Beta. “Well, yeah, it’s true. Before we received our wolves, we were in love. We thought we were destined for each other, but… it didn’t happen.” The pain in her voice sent a chill down my spine. It was clearly a wound that hadn’t healed—and probably never would. “But hey,” she added quickly, “it doesn’t matter now, right? I’m happy he found you. Maybe I’ll find mine soon too. Who knows? Maybe my mate will also be a humble little omega.” There was poison in those last words, but I didn’t judge her. I understood. Her pain was probably as sharp as the many stitches it had taken to fit me into this wedding gown—the same gown Serena once thought would be hers. “You’re going to be the best Luna this pack has ever had.” I raised a finger to my lips, signaling her not to call me Luna just yet. “I’ll never be good enough in my mother-in-law’s eyes. She still can’t get past my background,” I said as I looked at myself in the mirror one more time. “So she’ll remain Luna. At least until tonight.” Serena smirked. She enjoyed tormenting Luna Claire—probably because she once thought she’d be Ethan’s mate. When that didn’t happen, Claire mocked her quietly, and probably still did. That’s why we got along so well. We both loathed the Alpha’s mother. “I’ll enjoy calling her Luna-Mother. It’ll make her feel even older.” I smiled. “Maybe Claire’s not so bad deep down. Maybe she’s just a worried mother.” “Do you really believe that, Nell?” Serena zipped up the back of my dress. “She’s obsessive. I know her well. She’s the kind of mother who doesn’t want any woman near her precious son. And not just out of jealousy—but because of the power you’re about to take from her.” My heart clenched. I hadn’t seen it that way. “Claire has been Luna since she was nineteen, and she’s held that power unchallenged. Now she’s being forced to step aside.” Serena fastened the zipper and draped the veil over my face. “Perfect. I’ll go tell your parents you’re ready.” The wedding was as perfect and magical as it could be. Ethan looked more handsome than ever in his groom’s tuxedo, and when we kissed at the altar, I wanted to leap into his arms and never let go. The party lived up to the most important wedding in the pack’s history. I danced until my feet gave out. At the end, in a simple ceremony—where I was already tipsy and desperately eager for Ethan’s mark—I was formally named the new Luna of Moon’s Fang. Claire had to pass me the tiara and place it on my head. That moment hurt her even more than walking Ethan down the aisle. “It’s time, my love,” Ethan whispered in my ear. He didn’t even have to growl for me to know what was coming. We marked each other while making love—a moment we had waited for until that very night, in our new shared bedroom. I don’t know how many times we did it. I lost count after the third. By sunrise, we were still caressing each other, ready to go again. I fell asleep with sunlight on my face and a smile I thought nothing and no one could ever erase. Everything was too perfect. Ethan spoiled me whenever he could. He dropped by my Luna office with chocolates, surprised me with flowers, or swept me into his sports car for a spontaneous getaway—always ending up in a meadow where we’d make love. Life with my Alpha was a dream. I also started bonding with Clarissa, my wolf, who had awakened the moment Ethan claimed me as his mate. I was one of the rare omegas who actually had a wolf. Though I hadn’t dared shift yet, I could hear her wise advice and sense her ability to read people—their intentions, their auras. I couldn’t have been happier… until that afternoon. I’d finished my duties and noticed Ethan hadn’t visited me yet, so I decided to surprise him. “How about we do something else, Nellie?” Clarissa whispered in my mind. “Let’s go to the city, what do you say?” “The city? Why would I want to go there now? Don’t you feel the same longing I do to see Ethan?” I hurried toward the private quarters of the pack house. “Wait, Nellie, hold on,” Clarissa warned. “This might not be the best moment to see Ethan.” I froze, keys in hand. “What are you talking about? Why wouldn’t this be a good time? What are you trying to tell me?” “Let’s just go for a drive, please? Take the sports car you got for the wedding. Let’s just enjoy ourselves for a bit.” Something was wrong. I could feel it. A shiver ran down my spine. Why did Clarissa sound so worried? I couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible was waiting behind that door. “If you won’t tell me, then I’ll find out for myself,” I said as I opened the door. “Nellie, I’m trying to protect you. Please, just listen.” “Then tell me what’s going on. Why can’t I see Ethan right now?” The moment I stepped into the house, I knew something was wrong. I felt it through the mate bond. I rushed upstairs—my feet heavier with each step. By the time I reached the hallway, I was sweating, gasping for breath. I opened the door to our bedroom, fully aware that something terrible was happening. Ethan’s scent hit me… mixed with something sweeter. Feminine. The door was locked. But I was no longer a weak omega. I had my wolf now—my wild side—and I broke the doorknob with my bare hands. I did it. The double doors burst open— And I knew, instantly, what I was seeing. Serena’s bare ass was still right in front of me, and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from its shameless motion. “What the hell?!” I screamed, unable to believe my eyes.
