Chapter 7Mid-morning on Monday I receive an email from Detective Gerard. It is a one-liner, simply acknowledging receipt of the one I sent him. There is no specific mention of Dupont, no words of encouragement or offers of help, but that seems to be par for the course now and I suppose I prefer it that way. It's good to feel trusted and in control, but in moments of self-doubt I can also feel left out on a limb. Patricia telephones me for the second time to report on Mimi our cat and her new 'son', Jesus. She also informs me that Clara, one of our hens, has produced the biggest egg she has ever seen. Who names a creature which will someday be cooked in a pot for soup? I have to ask her not to phone again, unless it is an emergency and then I feel guilty because I know she's frightened that
