Chapter ThreeThe previous day Pete kissed his wife tenderly. “Enjoy your evening at the theater. Tell Laura, I'll collect the children at four-thirty sharp.” “Do you think they'll be alright?” Sarah said, anxiously. “I've never been away from them all night. What if they need me?” Sarah had been looking forward to spending an evening at the theater with her friend in Alnwick, but now the time had almost come, she wasn't quite so sure. “They'll be fine,” Pete reassured her. “I'll pick them up at half-past four and bring them home for tea. After that, we'll play a few games before bedtime. They'll love it.” He laughed. “Hide and seek seems to be the game of the moment.” “I know.” Still unconvinced, Sarah sighed. “But what if…?” “Forget about what ifs.” Pete kissed the end of her nose.
