Father James followed Vincent outside the cottage so that they could speak in private. The priest could tell from the expression on the viscount’s face that he had something concerning him on his mind, and he suspected it had something to do with that morning’s events. Being the local laird Father James appreciated that Vincent felt responsible for the welfare of his flock, much in the same way that he himself did.
