Chapter 1
War of the Crown is, as the name suggests, primarily about the war between Merceria and Norland, yet this conflict does not exist in a vacuum. Like many wars in the real world, some people are willing to take advantage of the conflict to further their own aims and nowhere is this more evident than in the Twelve Clans.
I conceived this storyline some years ago, though, of course, the details changed as the story developed. The real trick in writing this was showing the growing threat in the Clanholdings while centring most of the tale on the conflict in the north.
At its heart, though, it’s about the individuals who, through their perseverance and bravery, overcome tremendous odds to see through to victory.
The Mercerians finally defeated the enemy in the north. Now, with their numbers greatly reduced, they must turn their attention westward once more to rescue the lost kingdom of Weldwyn. This time, however, they must face an enemy armed with dragons!
Gerald, Anna, Beverly, and all the others will return to face their greatest challenge in Triumph of the Crown.
War of the Crown could not have been completed without the valuable assistance of my wife, Carol, who has acted as editor, promotional expert, and inspiration for all my books. Because of her encouragement and support, I feel able to bring these tales to the world.
In addition, I should like to thank Amanda Bennett, Christie Bennett, and Stephanie Sandrock for their support and enthusiasm, along with Brad Aitken, Stephen Brown and the late Jeffrey Parker for their interesting and slightly quirky character inspirations.
Valuable feedback was also provided by my BETA team, so I would like to give them a shout of recognition for their continued efforts. Thanks to: Charles Mohapel,Will Groberg, Joanna Smith, Susan Young, Anna Ostberg, Debbie Reeves, James McGinnis, Don Hinckley, Michael Rhew, Jim Burk, Rachel Deibler, Phyllis Hinkley, and Lisa Hanika.
Thanks also go to you, my readers, who have followed along as I tell the story of these Mercerian misfits. Your encouragement and feedback has been most rewarding, and I look forward to hearing more from you in the future.
