CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Before making her decision to contact Stephanie before simply driving out to Kansas City, Mackenzie decided on two things. One: she would FaceTime her; despite her pig-headedness, she knew that Stephanie was an emotional mess at heart and seeing her sister’s face on the other end of a screen might make communicating with her a little easier. Two: she was not going to tell Stephanie that she was in Nebraska. That would only make matters stranger and set Stephanie’s internal alarms off.
She placed the FaceTime call and when the line started ringing, Mackenzie didn’t even try to pretend that she wasn’t nervous as hell. After several seconds, she was sure that Stephanie wouldn’t answer her call. But just as she was expecting the ringing to stop, Stephanie answered.
