Chapter 14 pt. 1

{Enslee’s POV} We had been shopping for nearly four hours, and my stomach was starting to growl. Apparently, mine wasn’t the only one because Renley’s stomach growled loud enough for everyone to hear. She was currently in front of a set of mirrors admiring a cocktail length dress that her sister had picked out for her. “Wow Ren, hungry much?” Carina called from a nearby clothes rack. Renley laughed and turned around to face her sister. “Well yeah, I haven’t had anything to eat in almost 24 hours...been kinda busy with Brett doing...well you know.” She gave us a suspicious wink and laughed when Analia fake gagged from the pile of jeans she was ruffling through. Davian simply rolled his eyes and returned to the magazine he was reading while parched on a chair near the fitting room entrance. He had faithfully driven us from store to store, walked into each one and sat silently until we were ready to leave. He carried our bags and loaded the car each time. He truly was patient with our girly habits, and I adored him for it. I was scanning through shoes in the back corner of the store trying to find some cute heels that would compliment my own dress that I’d bought earlier. We were all getting our outfits together for the sisters’ induction banquet.  It was tradition in the Black Mountain pack to have a banquet once a month to welcome any new members that had recently joined the pack. That would make it possible for them to officially join the pack. Carina and Renley were the only two members that would be honored at the banquet in two days on New Year’s Eve.  Everyone was excited for the opportunity to celebrate something happy and to ring in the New Year in style. The sisters were happy to finally join a pack of their own after so long.  Carina had told me about their parents being killed in a car wreck two years ago, and I felt like I could relate somewhat to them. My own parents had been taken from me, and I was relieved to find a new pack and essentially a new family. “Carina what are you most excited for when you officially get to join the pack?” Analia was walking out of the fitting room area with a new pair of jeans on that hugged her perfectly.  “Well I am just excited to get to mindlink others besides Davian and Renley.” Wolves could mindlink their blood relatives and mates once they completed the mating process, but they couldn’t mindlink anyone else unless they were an official member of a pack. “Oh yeah me too! I only just got the ability to mindlink Brett today and he’s been blabbing to me nonstop to make sure we’re okay. He’s so paranoid. I am ready to be able to talk to other people like Analia and the Luna!” Renley had changed out of the cocktail dress and had slung it over the back of the couch. She had placed it in her self-proclaimed “buy” pile. “Well, as much as I would love to mindlink with you all as well, I won’t be able to until I am officially named as the Luna of your pack. I will have to have a Luna ceremony and all.” Renley and Carina both smiled very widely at this news. “Oh, then that means we’ll have to go shopping again! And we have to plan an even bigger party!!! When is it going to take place Enslee?” Carina was staring at me intently waiting for my answer. I opened and closed my mouth like a fish not knowing what to say. Not being comfortable enough to complete the mating process right now, I didn’t know whether I would actually get to officially be the Luna. If a Luna is from a different pack, she must complete the mating process in order to become the Luna of her new pack. It was the same if an Alpha was a wolf from a different pack, although that occurrence was rarer.  “Well, see I don’t know when I will complete the mating process…” Understanding immediately flashed across Analia’s face. It didn’t surprise her, since she was born as a high ranking wolf. She’d been trained all her life to know the traditions and the laws of the werewolves.  “She can’t become Luna officially until she mates and marks Zander and he does the same. It’s one of the oldest pack laws there is. It isn’t widely known, since it hardly ever affects Alpha pairs that typically mate within a few days of meeting each other. Obviously, this is a special case.” she explained to the Sullivan sisters.  They both nodded their heads and embraced me in a hug. “Official or not, you are our Luna, and we are so glad to have you in our pack.” I thanked Analia for her kind words and helping me explain it. We finished up our shopping extravaganza and made our final purchases as the staff started shutting off lights and locking up. Davian carried most of the bags out to our car, and we followed closely behind laughing at something Carina had said.  Davian had to park the car about five blocks from the store, since most of the parking spots were full at this time of night. He started walking quickly, as men do. We fell behind being slow because of the distraction of laughing.  All of a sudden Harley started growling in my head and frantically clawing to get to the surface. It took me by surprise, and I nearly shifted right then and there. I had to protect my friends, but I didn’t know why. We need to shift NOW! We have to protect them, we are the future Luna!! Damn it Enslee, let me through NOW! My wolf had never demanded to be let out before, and she had never screamed at me. I knew it must be important, so I stepped back mentally. I shifted, ripping the clothes I borrowed from Analia in the process. I could see the girls scattering around me to make room for my larger wolf form.  They all looked at me with shock and covered their mouths. In my wolf form, my sense of smell was even more sensitive. I couldn’t see anyone on the street except for my friends. Davian had dipped around a corner three blocks ahead.  Analia tried to talk to Harley, though no one had officially met her other than Zader, and that wasn’t on the best terms. “Hi Enslee’s wolf, is everything okay?” Harley flattened her ears and growled lowly. She wasn’t looking at Analia, instead she was staring down the road at a lone man who’d appeared out of nowhere. Analia turned and I could hear her gulp. Carina and Renley both turned and saw why Harley was growling.  The man’s eyes darted from each of us, and he landed on me. A malicious growl ripped through his chest, and he started running toward us. He shifted mid-stride and darted even faster at our group. I thought he was headed for me, but I was sorely mistaken.  He switched his path to glide to my left. He jumped and shoved Analia to the ground with both of his paws on her shoulders. During his leap, Carina and Renley had both shifted to defend themselves. Analia couldn’t shift since she was pregnant.  I snarled loudly enough to grab the attention of the muddy brown wolf that now had my Beta Female and friend pinned to the ground. I tackled him and we rolled away from Analia into the street. I clawed at him and bit into flesh wherever I could grab a hold.  I could feel his claws and teeth tearing into me as well, but I ignored the stabs of pain and kept fighting as we rolled on the hard asphalt. I finally could make sense of where he was and how he was positioned over me. Harley reared back and chomped down on his neck.  The wolf howled in distress, and I bit even harder. Finally I heard a sickening crunch, and I knew I had broken his neck. The wolf fell to the side lifeless, but it wasn’t long until there were two more wolves attacking us. They headed straight for Carina and Renley who were flanking Analia.  Carina jumped on one, but the other tackled Renley pinning her underneath him. Harley growled and flattened her ears in pure rage. She ran and jumped into the wolf knocking him to the ground. We bit his neck and killed him instantly while Carina pinned the other wolf to the ground under her paws. Renley was heading straight for the kill, but I shifted back to my human form immediately and yelled at her wolf.  “NO! We need one alive. We need to know who they are and what they want.: I looked around for a heavy object and settled for a chunk of concrete. I grabbed it and hit the struggling wolf over the head with it knocking him out. Just then, the black suburban came speeding around the corner.  “Okay, someone tell Davian what happened, I will hide the two other bodies in an alleyway while you all load that one into the car. We’ll have some pack warriors come back out and dispose of the dead ones.” I shifted back to my wolf form to hide my nakedness from Davian. I started working on taking the dead bodies to an alley behind a dumpster. Carina shifted into her human form, while Renley stayed a wolf to keep herself modest as well.  Davian threw his leather jacket around Carina as she explained to him what happened. He nodded and helped her load the third wolf into the backseat of the suburban. Carina called out to me once they got everything settled.  “Luna, is everything good with the dead bodies?” Harley nodded her head. “Okay, Renley said she’d run home with you if you’d like.” After another short nod, Renley came to my side. Carina, Davian and Analia got into the car and sped off down the road, while Renley and I ducked into the alleyway and ran under the cover of shadows behind buildings before heading to the nearby treeline.  We ran the thirty miles back to the pack territory and barely beat the suburban through the gates. Davian honked at us while shaking his head and smiling. Harley sped up as she sensed that we were nearing our mate, and we came to a halt at the steps of the packhouse.  The boys were already coming out to greet us, and I had guessed that Renley used her new abilities to communicate with Brett to let them know we had come back. Brett ran over to Renley’s sable colored wolf and looked at her.  “Renley, what the hell happened?” he asked, very worried. Renley was mindlinking with Brett to fill him in, since we couldn’t shift back to our human forms out in the open, and I couldn’t yet mindlink Zader. Brett’s face was going white as he listened to his mate. Zader was studying my wolf with concern as well. “Harley...are you injured? You have a lot of blood on you. It is pretty easy to spot on your beautiful white coat.”  Harley tilted her head not sure how to answer without words. He scratched her head and looked at her with sadness in his eyes. “I know, it’s hard to talk like this. One day we won’t have to worry about that. For now, just blink once for yes and twice for no.” He winked at us and I laughed mentally. Such a goofball.  “Did you get hurt?” One blink for yes. “Did you break anything?” Two blinks for no. “Are the puncture wounds deep?” Two blinks for no again.  “Thank the moon goddess. Davian, what is that??” Harley turned to see Davian and Carina unloading the unconscious wolf out of the car. Analia was on the other side holding her pregnant belly while she relayed the story to a very worried looking Rylan whose eyes were growing blacker by the second.  “Alpha, it’s one of the attackers. He’s still alive, but your mate there knocked him unconscious to bring him back for questioning. From what I gather there were three of them, rogues. They were after Analia. I think they wanted her because she’s pregnant from what my mate told me.” Davian finished explaining the heap of fur that was being unloaded.  Rylan and Analia had joined the circle at this point, and he shoved her behind him to separate her from the wolf lying in the dirt. He growled menacingly and started walking toward the wolf. Zader laid a hand on his chest and stopped him mid stride.  “No, Rylan. I know you’re pissed. Hell all four of us are pissed, because this asshole attacked all of our mates. I know you out of everyone has the most reason to kill this rogue, but we also need information in case this happens again.” Rylan’s eyes were almost solid black, but he couldn’t ignore a command from his alpha. He took a deep breath and stepped back to Analia. He put one hand around her shoulders and rested the other on the unborn pup.  Zader nodded once he saw that Rylan wasn’t going to do anything rash. He looked at Davian and Brett. “Once you’re sure your mates are okay, escort this trash to the dungeon. Rylan, take Analia to the pack hospital and have Dr. Stevens look her over. Mindlink me when he gives a report. That will tell me what kind of interrogation this will be.” Rylan nodded with a hard jerk of the head and guided Analia, who was limping slightly, to the path that led to the hospital. Davian and Brett finished speaking with the girls and lifted the wolf and carried him around to the back of the packhouse.
