{Zader POV}
I woke up around 4:00 in the morning to a piercing scream in the room. I immediately jumped up searching for the cause of the loud noise and my eyes landed on Enslee. She was thrashing in the hospital bed and yanking the IVs out of her arms. I rushed over to her and wrapped my arms around her while yelling for Rylan.
“Rylan get the f**k in here! She’s freaking out.”
Rylan slung the door open and yelled for a nurse. Two nurses came in after him followed by Dr. Wilson. I was still holding her in my arms, but she was surprisingly strong for a she-wolf. Male Alphas were usually the strongest of our kind, and she was making me struggle for a grip.
Dr. Wilson plunged a syringe into her thigh and pushed the plunger down. “What did you just give her??” I yelled over her screams.
She slowly stopped screaming and her thrashing calmed. I loosened my grip on her as she laid back against my chest. The nurses reinserted her IVs and began checking her vitals.
“It was a solution of wolfsbane that was dissolved to only be effective as a sedative. She’s only sleeping. It’ll wear off in a few hours. What happened?”
I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know. I was asleep and she just started screaming.”
Dr. Wilson nodded and looked at me with a grim face. “It would seem your mate has PTSD. She suffered a huge trauma, which means she’ll have a long road to recovery. Her physical wounds may be healed in the coming days, but the mental wounds are much deeper and require much more time.”
The nurses finished their work on Enslee and left with Dr. Wilson trailing behind. “I will be back in a few hours to check on her. You should get some rest Alpha. It seems that you have a long few days ahead of you.”
After the door shut I looked at Rylan. “Where’s Analia?”
“I sent her back to the hotel room. She had fallen asleep in the waiting room chairs and looked really uncomfortable. She tried to fight me on it, but I pulled the Beta card on her. She wanted to stay to protect the Luna, but she’s pregnant. I didn’t want anything to happen to the pup, so I made her leave for the night.”
I smiled and nodded my head. “Of course. She is very kind to try and stay, but I am glad you sent her to the hotel.”
Rylan walked out and took his place outside of the door to stand guard. The door shut behind him, and I realized that I was still in the bed holding Enslee.
I looked down at her face as she slept. Her expression was pained, and it broke my heart to see her that way. I stroked her face and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. Her grimace lightened and she nestled closer to me. I smiled at the small comfort I gave her, even if it was while she was asleep.
I laid back in the bed and gently maneuvered her body so that we both fit. I was careful to not pull any wires or IV lines, and I situated her body in my arms. She sighed and laid her hand on my chest. I put my hand on top of it and stroked it. She smiled again, making my heart skip a beat. She truly was beautiful.
Her hair was a deep mahogany brown that really shined when the moonlight streaming through the window hit it. I stroked her hair and gently kissed the top of her head. I rested my head on the pillow, and before I knew it I was asleep.
---
I woke to the sound of the door opening across the room. I opened my eyes to sunlight and Dr. Wilson’s concerned face. “Did she wake up again Alpha?”
I looked down and realized I was still holding my mate in the hospital bed as she continued to sleep. “Um, no. I, uh, fell asleep.”
Dr. Wilson nodded and kept his eyes to the floor. I untangled myself from her body and stood up. I grabbed my phone off the table next to the bed and went across the room to sit in the chair. Dr. Wilson checked her vitals and looked at the IV levels.
“Her morphine is running low. She’s burning it at a much faster rate that werewolves normally do. Her healing is also almost complete. I thought it would take at least 48 hours for the broken bones, but it seems that her body had other things in mind. She should be ready to leave the hospital by tonight. This wolf is extraordinary.”
“You have no idea.” I said and smiled at my mate.
“She will wake up in an hour or two. You might need my assistance, as she could be very afraid. The last time she was fully conscious, she was being attacked violently.”
I thanked him for his help, and he left the room. Rylan came in shortly after with Analia behind him. She was carrying a brown sack.
“Good morning Alpha” Analia said.
“Analia, you know you can just call me Zader. You don’t have to use my title.”
“I know, but I want to show respect in front of my Luna.” she replied.
I smiled. Analia was always respectful, even when her Luna was completely passed out.
We brought breakfast. You haven’t eaten since lunch yesterday, so we thought you’d be hungry. I was also pretty sure that you weren’t going to leave this hospital room without her.” Rylan said.
“Yeah, you’re right about both. What did you bring?” I asked, just as my stomach started to growl.
Analia and Rylan laughed and laid out the food they brought. I pulled the chair over to the coffee table across from the couch, where Rylan and Analia were sitting down. They had brought breakfast burritos from a nearby cafe.
“Why didn’t you just go get breakfast from the packhouse?” I asked as I bit into my sausage burrito.
“I don’t trust this pack, especially if they know who your mate really is. Alpha Slade didn’t get a great look at her before Rylan carried her away. When he finds out that the girl he enslaved for ten years is now the mate of the most powerful Alpha in the western U.S., he might get a little nervous. Especially if he thinks you might find out the truth about her parents.”
Analia gave me a concerned look, and I knew she was right. If Slade found out that we knew the truth, then he could go after us. We had to get Enslee out of this pack before we could think about getting justice for her and her family.
She was my whole world now. My sun rose and set with her, and I would do whatever it took to protect her. I would never let anyone hurt her again.
We finished eating breakfast and got the table cleaned off. Rylan went to the packhouse to speak on my behalf at the pact meeting. Each year, the day after the Christmas Ball, the present Alphas always gather to discuss treaties and trade deals.
I would have gone, but I wasn’t going to leave Enslee. Rylan went on my behalf and would make deals for our pack. I trusted him to make these kinds of choices. He knew how I thought and what would benefit our pack.
Analia stayed behind to stay with me and arrange for our travel home. We would leave tonight as soon as Enslee was officially released from the hospital.
“Alpha, she’s waking up I think.” Analia said. I looked over to the bed to see my mate’s eyes fluttering against the harsh lights.
“I should go and give you two some private time.” I grabbed her arm to stop her from leaving.
“No, she might need a female presence. She has no clue who I am, and I don’t want to scare her.”
She hesitated but nodded her head and stood near the wall on the far side of the room. I was finally going to get to meet my mate.
