CHAPTER 10 : THE STARS' WARNING

1226 Words
The figure stood unmoving, its presence cloaked in shadow, as if the forest itself had shaped the guardian from its depths. Alina’s heart pounded in her chest. Something about this guardian felt different from the creatures of the Darkness they had faced before. It wasn’t pure evil—it was something older, more neutral but equally dangerous. Kael’s stance was tense, his sword halfway out of its scabbard. “We don’t want trouble,” he said, his voice low, eyes locked on the figure. “We’re just passing through.” The figure did not lower their hand. Instead, they stepped forward, and the shadows swirling around them seemed to solidify, like a barrier made of night. “None pass through Elyndor without paying the toll,” the guardian said. Their voice was like a whisper on the wind, ancient and cold. “Not even the Starborn.” Alina felt a pull deep in her chest at the mention of her title. She glanced at Kael, then back at the figure. “What toll do you want?” she asked cautiously. “We have nothing to give.” The figure tilted their head, as if considering her words. The silence stretched between them, and for a moment, the forest itself seemed to hold its breath. Then, without warning, the shadows surged forward, engulfing the space between them. Kael moved in front of Alina, sword raised, but the shadows didn’t attack. Instead, they swirled around the two of them, encasing them in a dome of darkness. The forest vanished, replaced by a vast, star-filled sky. It was as if they had been transported into the night itself. Alina’s breath caught in her throat. The stars above twinkled brightly, more vibrant than she had ever seen before, and as she stared up at them, she felt an overwhelming sense of connection—like they were trying to tell her something. “The stars speak to you, Starborn,” the guardian’s voice echoed through the void. “But their warning is not one of peace.” Alina’s pulse quickened. “What do you mean?” The stars above began to shift, forming shapes and constellations that danced across the sky. For a moment, Alina saw a vision—a sprawling city bathed in silver light, its towers reaching toward the heavens. But the vision was quickly consumed by darkness, the light snuffed out as shadowy tendrils crept across the sky, swallowing everything in their path. A deep sense of dread washed over her. The vision was clear—the Darkness was coming for them, and it was closer than she had realized. “The path you walk is fraught with peril,” the guardian said, their voice softer now, almost sympathetic. “The Darkness knows of your journey, Starborn, and it will stop at nothing to claim you.” Alina swallowed hard, her mind racing. The Darkness was aware of her? Of her connection to the prophecy? It had always felt like a distant, looming threat, but now it was clear—she was being hunted. “What can we do?” she asked, her voice trembling. The stars above shifted again, and this time Alina saw herself—standing alone on a cliff, the ocean raging below. In her hands was a glowing orb, pulsing with light. But as she stood there, the Darkness approached, its tendrils reaching for her, ready to consume her completely. The vision flickered, and Alina saw another figure standing beside her—Kael. He stood tall, sword in hand, his face set with determination. Together, they faced the oncoming tide of shadow. “You are not alone,” the guardian said, their voice echoing through the void. “The bond you share with the warrior will be your strength. But it will also be tested.” Alina’s heart clenched at the words. She looked at Kael, who was still watching the shadows warily, unaware of the vision she had seen. A part of her had always felt that their fates were intertwined, but now, hearing it spoken by the guardian, the weight of it felt heavier. Kael turned to her, sensing her distress. “Alina? What’s happening?” She hesitated, the images of the vision still burning in her mind. “The stars are warning us,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “The Darkness is closer than we think.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Then we’ll be ready. We’ve faced worse.” Alina wasn’t sure if that was true. The vision had shown her a power greater than anything they had faced before, and she knew deep down that it was only the beginning. But there was no time for hesitation. The guardian stepped closer, the shadows around them fading slightly, revealing the silhouette of a face beneath the hood. “The city of the Starborn awaits you. There, you will find the answers you seek. But beware—the Darkness is not the only force that will seek to control your fate.” “What do you mean?” Alina asked, her pulse quickening. “The prophecy is not as simple as you believe,” the guardian replied, their voice laced with an ancient wisdom. “There are forces at play that you do not yet understand. You must choose your allies wisely.” The stars above dimmed, and the vision began to fade. Alina felt the cold bite of the forest air return as the shadows around them dissolved, revealing the towering trees of Elyndor once more. The guardian stood before them, their hand lowering as the magic around them dissipated. “The stars have spoken,” the guardian said, their voice now quieter, more distant. “You may continue your journey. But remember, Starborn—the future is not set in stone. Your choices will shape what is to come.” Alina nodded, her heart heavy with the weight of the warning. “Thank you,” she whispered, though she wasn’t sure if the guardian had truly helped them or only deepened the mystery surrounding the prophecy. The guardian bowed their head slightly, then stepped back into the shadows, disappearing as silently as they had appeared. The forest around them remained eerily quiet, the only sound the soft rustling of leaves in the wind. Kael sheathed his sword, his expression grim. “What did the stars say?” Alina hesitated, the words of the guardian echoing in her mind. “They warned us that the Darkness is coming for me. For both of us. And that we’re going to be tested.” Kael’s gaze softened, and he stepped closer, his hand brushing hers briefly. “We’ll face it together, Alina. Whatever comes, I’ll be by your side.” Alina felt a warmth spread through her chest at his words, but the weight of the stars’ warning still lingered. She glanced up at the sky, where the stars were once again hidden behind the canopy of trees. Whatever trials awaited them, she knew that the bond she shared with Kael would be key to their survival. But as the guardian had said, that bond would be tested—and Alina wasn’t sure if they were ready for what was to come. Together, they turned and continued their journey deeper into Elyndor, the shadows of the forest growing longer around them.
