CHAPTER 12 : THE HIDDEN REALM

1353 Words
The man’s cryptic words lingered in the air long after he vanished into the darkness. Alina stared at the spot where he had disappeared, her heart pounding in her chest. “Beneath the crescent moon, your fate will be revealed,” he had said. But what did it mean? And who was this mysterious figure who claimed to serve the Starborn? Kael remained tense beside her, his sword still in hand. “I don’t trust him,” he muttered. His gaze scanned the forest, as though expecting the stranger to reappear at any moment. “No one just appears like that without an agenda.” Alina couldn’t disagree. There was something unsettling about the man’s pale eyes, the way they seemed to see straight through her. But beneath the unease, there was also a flicker of hope. If he truly knew of the Starborn city—if he could guide them—perhaps they were closer to their goal than they had thought. “We have to follow him,” Alina said, her voice steady despite the doubt gnawing at her. “If he’s telling the truth, he might lead us to the city.” Kael shook his head, his expression hard. “Or he could be leading us into a trap. We’ve seen enough betrayal to know better than to trust the first stranger who claims to help.” Alina understood his hesitation, but something about the man’s words resonated with her. She had felt the magic in the air when he spoke, the same magic that connected her to the stars and the prophecy. “I don’t think he’s lying,” she said quietly. “I felt it. The connection to the stars.” Kael studied her for a long moment, his eyes softening slightly. He had always trusted her instincts, even when he didn’t fully understand them. “If you think this is the right path, we’ll follow it,” he said at last. “But we stay alert. No more surprises.” Alina nodded, grateful for his support. Together, they set off in the direction the stranger had gone, moving cautiously through the dense forest. The moonlight barely penetrated the thick canopy above, and the deeper they ventured, the more the air seemed to hum with an otherworldly energy. After what felt like hours of walking, the trees began to thin, revealing a narrow path that twisted between towering rocks. Alina’s pulse quickened as they approached—there was something ancient about this place, something hidden. The rocks were etched with strange markings, symbols she couldn’t decipher but felt drawn to all the same. “This is it,” she whispered, her breath catching in her throat. “We’re close.” Kael looked at the markings, his brow furrowed. “What are these symbols?” Alina shook her head. “I’m not sure. But they’re old. Older than anything we’ve seen so far.” They followed the path deeper into the rocks, the air growing cooler with every step. The forest seemed to fall away behind them, and soon, they found themselves standing before a large stone archway. The arch was covered in the same strange symbols, and beyond it was a shimmering wall of light—an ethereal barrier that flickered like the surface of a rippling lake. “This is the Hidden Realm,” Alina realized, her voice barely above a whisper. “The guardian spoke of it. It’s where the Starborn city is hidden.” Kael stepped closer to the barrier, his hand hovering over the shimmering light. “A magical barrier,” he said, his voice laced with awe. “I’ve never seen anything like this.” Alina reached out with her senses, feeling the pulse of magic emanating from the barrier. It was powerful, ancient, and strangely familiar. “We need to pass through,” she said. “But we have to be careful. If this is a test, like the guardian said, it won’t be easy.” Kael nodded, his eyes narrowing in determination. “I’ll go first.” Before she could protest, he stepped forward, pushing his hand through the shimmering light. The barrier rippled around him, distorting his form for a moment before he disappeared completely. Alina’s heart leaped into her throat. She hesitated only for a second before following him, stepping into the barrier with a deep breath. The world around her blurred, the air turning cold and thick as though she was walking through water. For a moment, she couldn’t breathe, couldn’t see. Then, just as quickly as it began, the sensation passed, and she stumbled forward into a new world. The air was crisp and clear, the sky above an endless expanse of deep indigo, scattered with stars that shimmered more brightly than Alina had ever seen. The landscape before her was both strange and beautiful—a vast plain of silver grass that swayed gently in the breeze, dotted with trees that glowed faintly in the starlight. In the distance, the ruins of a once-great city rose from the ground, its towers crumbling but still majestic, bathed in the soft light of the moon. Kael was standing a few steps ahead, his eyes wide with wonder. “This... is it,” he breathed. “The Starborn city.” Alina stepped forward, her heart racing. The city called to her, a deep pull that resonated with the magic inside her. She had seen it in the stars, in her visions, but now that she was here, it felt more real than she could have imagined. As they approached the city, the air around them grew heavier with magic. The ruins were vast, their stone walls covered in the same ancient symbols that had lined the path. But there was something else—something dark lurking beneath the surface. Alina stopped, her gaze fixed on the largest tower in the center of the city. A cold shiver ran down her spine. “Something’s wrong,” she said quietly. Kael’s hand tightened around the hilt of his sword. “What is it?” “I don’t know,” Alina admitted, her voice trembling. “But the stars warned us. The Darkness... it’s here.” As if in response to her words, the ground beneath their feet trembled, and a low rumble echoed through the ruins. The silver grass around them began to wither, turning black and brittle. Shadows crept along the edges of the city, rising from the cracks in the stone, swirling like smoke. Kael drew his sword, his eyes scanning the surroundings. “We need to move.” But before they could take a step, the shadows surged forward, coiling around their feet like tendrils of dark magic. Alina gasped as the cold seeped into her skin, the Darkness pulling at her, trying to drag her down. “Kael!” she cried, struggling against the shadows. Her magic flared inside her, but the Darkness was strong, its grip tightening with every passing second. Kael slashed at the shadows with his sword, but the blade passed through them harmlessly. “Alina! Use your magic!” She closed her eyes, focusing on the stars above. The magic inside her pulsed, responding to the light of the stars, and with a surge of power, she sent a wave of energy through her body. The shadows recoiled, hissing as they retreated, but Alina could feel them lurking just beneath the surface, waiting for their chance to strike again. Kael grabbed her arm, pulling her to her feet. “We need to find shelter,” he said urgently. “We can’t fight this out in the open.” Alina nodded, her heart racing. Together, they ran toward the ruins of the city, the Darkness trailing behind them like a creeping fog. As they reached the safety of the ancient walls, Alina cast one last glance at the sky. The crescent moon hung low, its light barely illuminating the city. Whatever lay ahead, the Hidden Realm was not a place of refuge—it was a battleground, and the Darkness was only growing stronger.
