Chapter 3 Her Husband

736 Words
Twenty minutes later, the private doctor removed his stethoscope and explained to Melissa Kent, Claude's grandmother, "Mr. Kent has indeed woken up. All his bodily functions are recovering, except for his legs..." Melissa interrupted the doctor, showing clear excitement, "Great! Claude is awake!" Claude turned his head and called out to her in a hoarse voice, "Grandma..." Melissa quickly walked to his bedside, tears glistening in her eyes. "Claude, I knew you wouldn't give up." Claude slowly patted Melissa's hand and looked toward Lillian. "Grandma, this is..." Melissa also looked at Lillian, clearly very pleased with a smile. She smiled as she tightly held Lillian's hand and Claude's together. "This is your wife, Lillian. She's a wonderful girl and the lucky star of the Kent family." Claude looked confused for a moment. "What?" Lillian didn't feel the usual fear for the first time because of him. But quickly, that feeling vanished. What replaced it was a sharper, sword-like gaze. Her blue eyes now seemed so cold and unapproachable. Lillian, who had thought she could play the role of Mrs. Kent well, hesitated. Lillian gathered her courage and shared her thoughts with Melissa. "I was thinking... since Mr. Kent is awake, he probably doesn't need me to take care of him anymore. Should we cancel the wedding?" "Cancel? Who said to cancel it?" Melissa frowned instinctively but quickly calmed down. Clearly, her emotion regulation skills were as good as Claude's, just a true family trait. "Dear, you are the lucky star of the Kent family. No matter what happens, you are Claude's rightful wife. Don't worry. I won't let anyone question you." Melissa asked the doctor and the servants to leave and gently helped Lillian sit on Claude's bed. "From now on, you two need to take care of each other. If possible, it would be best to have some lovely babies." Melissa released her hand and gently stroked Lillian's hair. "Alright, it's getting late. I won't disturb you. Good night, dear." Now Lillian had to stay with Claude, feeling anxious. "Wait..." But Melissa had already left, closing the door behind her. Lillian tried to open the door but failed. She pressed her forehead against the door, feeling a bit overwhelmed. 'Lovely babies? Claude can't even move his legs. Does that mean I... No, that isn't the point. The point is, if I really did that, wouldn't Claude kill me?!' Lillian sighed and leaned against the door, meeting the probing gaze of the blue-eyed man. "Uh, the door is locked." Lillian looked out the window. Night had fallen, and the Kent Manor's garden was shrouded in darkness. "I guess I have to stay here tonight..." Claude snickered, watching her approach him with the same indifference as before. "It seems you're no different from other women... What are you doing?" Lillian waved the quilt in her hand, her expression innocent. "I was thinking of making a futon." Claude looked at her incredulously. "So you took my quilt?" Lillian paused. At this moment, she had a might as well throw in the towel attitude. "Or, Mr. Kent, do you mean you want me to sleep on the bed as well?" She rearranged the bedding, and before Claude could react, she slept under the quilt, wrapping herself up and clinging tightly to Claude's body. "Thank you, Mr. Kent. Have a good night and sweet dreams." The part of Claude's body she pressed against became stiff and hot. He couldn't believe it, his eyes wide open, breathing out of rhythm. "Is this how you take care of me, Ms. Lucky Star?" Claude growled through gritted teeth. Lillian, lying beside him, was not as calm as she appeared. Her heart was pounding, and she was trying to control her breathing to avoid further provoking Claude. 'If I woke up tomorrow and Claude kicked me out of Kent Manor, I would go back to school to continue getting my diploma.' This was the path Lillian had decided early on. "Answer me." His sudden voice startled Lillian, causing her body to tremble slightly. It amused Claude. "Are you afraid of me?" Lillian came to her senses and mumbled, "You can't do anything now. Why should I be afraid of you..." Soon, she realized she had said the wrong thing. His vibe became dangerous. "I can't do anything... Is that so?" Lillian tried to shrink back, but it was clear that avoiding him wouldn't help.
