Chapter 8 The Asshole Ex's Fate

903 Words
As soon as she entered the castle, the butler, Robert Hall, stepped forward to take the items from Lillian's hands. "Mrs. Kent, I'll take these to your bedroom. Mr. Kent is waiting for you in the study upstairs." In this castle, there was only one person Robert would address as Mr. Kent. Lillian's heart was pounding as she slowly ascended the stairs, getting closer to the study. The last time she had experienced something like this was at the Dawson family, where she had gone upstairs and found Harry cheating on her with her stepsister. She stopped at the study door. The door was tightly shut this time, and the soundproofing was excellent. She couldn't hear anything. The unknown made her even more anxious. After taking a deep breath, Lillian knocked on the door. Before she could withdraw her hand, the door opened. The study was somewhat dimly lit. It took Lillian a couple of seconds to adjust to the darkness, but what she saw next left her stunned. Harry was being held down on his knees by two bodyguards while Claude sat in the wheelchair, expressionless and cold. Noticing her arrival, Harry spoke up before she could even ask, "Claude, there's nothing between Lillian and me! That day, we just exchanged a few words! My girlfriend is her sister Janet. You must have found that out, right?!" Claude tapped his fingers on the armrests of the wheelchair. "I also found out that you're her ex-boyfriend." "Claude, we've already broken up, I swear!" Claude glanced at Lillian, his blue eyes seeming to soften a little. "What do you have to say?" Sweat gathered in Lillian's palms. This was her first time seeing Claude's tyrannical side up close. "I broke up with him before I married you. He betrayed me." "Betrayal." Claude smirked slightly, looking mocked. "I despise betrayal." "It wasn't betrayal, Claude! I just forgot to tell her we broke up. I've wanted to be with Janet for a long time, but Janet was worried about hurting her sister, so I didn't..." "Shut up." Harry's voice stopped abruptly. Lillian clenched her fists, feeling that nauseating sensation rising again. She sensed Claude's gaze on her. "What did you talk about on the balcony that day?" Hearing this question, Lillian realized what had been troubling Claude. 'So this was the reason why Claude was in a bad mood. But would he already know what Harry said on the balcony?' Harry shouted before she could think further, "Claude, it was her. It was Lillian who seduced me! She doesn't want to live with a cripple for the rest of her life, so she wanted me to..." Lillian instinctively slapped him. She had grown accustomed to hitting Harry whenever he crossed a line. Lillian once again saw how low he could go, and she shook with anger. "You wanted me to help you take over the family fortune, but I refused!" "No, it was her! She looked down on you because of your crippled legs. Claude, you have to believe me!" Harry, who was kneeling, tried to crawl towards Claude but was blocked by the bodyguards. Claude was still expressionless, but Lillian could tell he was even angrier than before. The study fell silent, and even Harry didn't dare speak again. Claude moved his wheelchair slowly until he was right in front of Harry. "A cripple, huh?" "No, Claude, that's not what I meant..." "Sounds like you're curious." "Claude, I'm not... Claude!" Harry looked like he was about to cry. Claude lifted his head, and for a brief moment, his gaze locked with Lillian’s. It was fleeting, but intense. He quickly looked away, dismissing the moment. “Forget it. Lock him up. Let him out when he’s clear-headed again.” The bodyguard hauled Harry out of the room, but it wasn’t long before Harry began thrashing violently. A series of pained, twisted screams echoed down the hallway before everything fell silent once more. Moments later, the bodyguard returned, his expression tense. "Boss, he... when he struggled, he fell down the stairs. His leg... it's probably broken." Claude barely glanced up, his tone cold and uninterested. "...Have a doctor look at it. Don’t bother me again." Once the bodyguard left, the dimly lit study was silent again, leaving only Lillian and Claude alone in the stillness. Lillian adjusted her breathing and forced herself to calm down. "I would never team up with someone who cheated on me with my stepsister in my home, Mr. Kent. Whatever he said..." Claude showed no sign of his usual flirting this time, only a careful seriousness. "Sign this," Claude interrupted her, pushing a stack of papers towards her. Lillian glanced at the first few pages. It was a divorce agreement. The moment she realized it was a divorce agreement, she felt a surprising sense of relief. The pages were filled with too many words, making Lillian's head spin. She didn't look too closely. She just reached out for a pen, but only to find there wasn't a pen nearby. "Where's the pen?" "You're eager for a divorce?" Claude sat in his wheelchair, looking at her with a deep, unreadable expression. Lillian pressed her lips, unable to discern Claude's emotions, unsure if she should say yes or no. Just then, the door to the study opened, and the light from the crystal chandelier in the hall spilled in. 'Thank goodness.' It was Melissa.
