Chapter Three: A Dangerous Agreement

1345 Words
Elena Carter had always been a fighter. Life had never handed her anything on a silver platter, and she had learned early on that the world didn’t play fair. But standing there, in front of Alexander Grayson, she felt like she was playing a game where she didn’t even know the rules. She searched his face for any sign that he was joking, but there was nothing. Just cold calculation wrapped in devastatingly sharp features. “You want me to pretend to be your fiancée?” she repeated, as if saying the words out loud would make them less absurd. “Yes.” She let out a hollow laugh, crossing her arms. “You’re out of your mind.” Alexander remained unfazed. If anything, he seemed to enjoy watching her struggle to process his proposal. “I assure you, I’m perfectly sane. This is a business arrangement. You need money. I need a fiancée. It’s a mutually beneficial transaction.” She hated how logical he made it sound. As if marrying someone—even pretending to—was the same as signing a contract. Elena shook her head. “No. Absolutely not. That’s insane.” His blue eyes darkened slightly, like a storm rolling in. “Is it?” “Yes!” He took a step closer, and despite every instinct screaming at her to hold her ground, she found herself taking a step back. His presence was suffocating, not because he was overbearing, but because he had a way of looking at her that made her feel like she was being unraveled, piece by piece. “Elena,” he said, his voice slow, measured. “You can either walk away from this conversation and continue struggling, or you can take this opportunity and change your life.” She clenched her fists. “You don’t know anything about my life.” “I know you’re drowning.” Her breath hitched. He continued, his voice steady. “I know your landlord is ready to kick you and your sister out of your apartment. I know you’ve been juggling multiple jobs just to barely scrape by. I know you had an art meeting today that didn’t go the way you wanted.” Elena swallowed hard. Every word he spoke was a knife, sharp and precise. “How do you know all that?” “I have resources.” She let out a bitter laugh. “You mean you spied on me.” “I did my research.” She stared at him, hating that part of her was considering it. Hating that he was right. “Why me?” she finally asked. “You could pick any woman in the city. Someone rich, someone from your world.” “I don’t want someone from my world,” he said simply. “I want someone unpredictable. Someone real.” Elena narrowed her eyes. “You mean someone desperate.” His lips curved slightly, as if she had amused him. “Call it whatever you want.” She ran a shaky hand through her hair. “What exactly would this ‘arrangement’ entail?” “You would be my fiancée for one month,” he said smoothly. “We attend events together. You meet my board, my business partners. We make the world believe we’re in love.” A shiver ran through her. “And after the month is over?” “We part ways. No strings attached.” No strings attached. As if that was possible. She took a deep breath. “And what do I get?” “Your debts paid off. A secure apartment for you and your sister. A fresh start.” A fresh start. It was too tempting. Too easy. Too dangerous. Elena forced herself to meet his gaze. “And if I say no?” His expression didn’t change. “Then you walk away, and I find someone else.” Her stomach twisted at the thought. Not because she wanted to do this, but because she hated the idea of someone else getting the chance she desperately needed. Her mind raced. It was madness. It was reckless. It was everything she had promised herself she’d never get involved in. But Sophie. This wasn’t just about her. This was about the only person in the world who truly mattered to her. “I want it in writing,” she said suddenly. “A contract.” Alexander’s lips quirked. “Of course.” “And I want my name on the lease for the apartment.” “Done.” She swallowed. “And Sophie never finds out about this.” His expression turned unreadable. “If that’s what you want.” Silence stretched between them. The city moved around them, but Elena felt like she was standing on the edge of a cliff, staring down into the unknown. She took a shaky breath and extended her hand. “Fine. You have a deal.” Alexander studied her for a moment before taking her hand in his. His grip was firm, steady. Unshakable. “Welcome to the game, Miss Carter.” Elena had expected many things after agreeing to Alexander’s insane proposal. What she hadn’t expected was being whisked away in a town car within minutes, heading straight to his penthouse to sign the contract. The car was silent except for the soft hum of the engine. She kept her hands clasped together in her lap, her heart a chaotic mess. He sat beside her, impossibly composed, like a man who had done this before. “This is insane,” she muttered under her breath. Alexander smirked. “You’re free to change your mind.” She shot him a glare. “You know I can’t.” “Then accept it.” She turned away, staring out at the blur of city lights. She couldn’t afford to back out now. The car slowed, pulling up in front of a towering glass building that screamed wealth. The kind of place Elena had only seen in magazines. A doorman opened the car door, and Alexander stepped out first, offering her his hand. She hesitated, then took it. His palm was warm, his grip strong. “This way,” he said, leading her inside. The penthouse was everything she imagined it would be—spacious, sleek, and impossibly luxurious. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline, the furniture was modern yet comfortable, and the entire space smelled like expensive cologne and control. She barely had a moment to take it in before a man in a sharp suit appeared. “Miss Carter, I presume?” he asked, offering a polite nod. “I’m Mr. Harris, Mr. Grayson’s attorney.” Elena took a steadying breath. “Nice to meet you.” He placed a stack of papers on the glass coffee table. “This outlines the terms of your agreement. You’ll find Mr. Grayson has been more than generous.” She sat down, flipping through the pages. The terms were clear. One month. Public appearances. No romantic involvement beyond what was necessary to convince the world they were engaged. No intimacy. She exhaled, relieved. “Is there a problem?” Alexander asked, watching her closely. She met his gaze. “Why me, really?” His lips curled into a slow smirk. “Because you’re not afraid to challenge me.” She didn’t know what to make of that. “I need a pen,” she murmured, reaching for one. Alexander handed it to her, their fingers brushing. A spark shot up her arm, unexpected and unwelcome. She ignored it, signing her name at the bottom. It was done. Alexander took the papers, flipping through them before nodding. “You move in tomorrow.” Elena’s stomach dropped. “What?” “If we’re going to convince the world we’re in love, you need to be where I am,” he said, as if it was obvious. “Starting now, you belong in my world.” Elena’s pulse thundered. She had made a deal with the devil. And now, there was no turning back.
