Chapter 9

The night was still, the air thick with anticipation as Elena slipped through the shadows, her son cradled protectively against her chest. Every step was a calculated risk, every breath a whisper in the darkness, lest the slightest sound betray her presence. "This way," Damien murmured, his voice barely audible as he led them through the winding corridors of the pack territory. Elena's heart pounded in her chest, the weight of her decision bearing down upon her like a crushing weight. She was leaving everything behind – her home, her pack, her very identity – all for the sake of her son. As they neared the edge of the territory, Elena's footsteps faltered, her mind flooded with memories of the life she was abandoning. She could still hear the echoes of laughter, the familiar scents of the forest, and the warmth of the bonds she had forged. "I can't do this," she whispered, her voice trembling. Damien stopped, his eyes flickering to her face in the dim light. "You must, Elena," he urged. "It's the only way to keep your son safe." Elena's grip tightened on the tiny bundle in her arms, her throat constricting with a mix of fear and determination. She knew Damien spoke the truth, knew that Kaden's actions had left her with no choice but to flee. With a steadying breath, she nodded, her resolve steeling once more. "Lead the way." They moved swiftly through the dense foliage, the shadows cloaking their escape like a protective veil. Elena's senses were heightened, every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of adrenaline through her veins. Suddenly, a twig cracked behind them, and Elena whirled around, her heart in her throat. "Who's there?" Damien hissed, his eyes scanning the darkness. A figure emerged from the shadows, and Elena's breath caught in her throat. "Olivia," she breathed, her heart sinking. The woman's lips curved into a cruel smile, her eyes glittering with malice. "Going somewhere, Elena?" she purred, her voice dripping with false sweetness. Elena's grip tightened on her son, her body tensing as Olivia took a step closer. "Stay back," Damien warned, his voice laced with steel. But Olivia merely laughed, a cold, hollow sound that sent shivers down Elena's spine. "You think you can just waltz out of here?" Olivia sneered. "With Kaden's son, no less?" Elena's heart stuttered in her chest. Kaden's son? She glanced down at the bundle in her arms, her mind reeling. "What are you talking about?" she demanded, her voice trembling. Olivia's eyes narrowed, her smile twisting into a cruel sneer. "You really didn't know?" she taunted. "The child Kaden took from you... It was his heir, his true son." Elena's world seemed to tilt on its axis, her breath catching in her throat. Kaden had taken his heir, his true-born son, leaving her with... Her gaze flickered to the sleeping infant in her arms, and a wave of anguish washed over her. Her son, the child she had sworn to protect, was not Kaden's after all. "You're lying," she whispered, her voice laced with desperation. But deep down, she knew the truth. She could see it in Olivia's eyes, in the triumph that danced across her features. "Believe what you want," Olivia sneered. "But the truth is, you were never meant to be Kaden's mate. You were nothing but a passing fancy, a temporary amusement." Her words cut like daggers, each syllable twisting the knife deeper into Elena's heart. "And now," Olivia continued, her voice laced with venom, "you've served your purpose. Kaden has his heir, and you... Well, you're expendable." Elena's vision blurred with unshed tears, her world crumbling around her. Elena's grip tightened on her son, her knuckles turning white with the strain. She could feel the weight of Olivia's words bearing down on her, crushing her beneath their cruelty. "You're wrong," she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of anguish and defiance. "This child is mine, and I will protect him with my life." Olivia threw her head back and laughed, the sound grating and hollow. "Protect him?" she sneered. "From what? Your own pathetic existence?" Elena flinched as if struck, the words slicing through her like a white-hot blade. "Face it, Elena," Olivia continued, her eyes glittering with malice. "You were never meant for this life. You were never strong enough, never worthy enough to be Kaden's mate." Damien stepped forward, his jaw clenched with fury. "That's enough," hegrowled, his voice laced with steel. But Olivia merely waved a dismissive hand, her gaze never wavering from Elena's stricken face. "Run all you want, Elena," she taunted. "But you'll never escape the truth. You're nothing. Less than nothing. And Kaden will always choose me." The words hung in the air like a poisonous miasma, seeping into Elena's very soul. She could feel her resolve wavering, her grip on reality slipping through her fingers like grains of sand. Damien placed a protective arm around her shoulders, his eyes blazing with a fury that could level mountains. "Don't listen to her, Elena," he murmured, his voice a lifeline in the darkness. "She's trying to break you, but you're stronger than she knows." Elena's gaze flickered to her son's sleeping face, his features peaceful and innocent. In that moment, she knew that no matter what Olivia said, no matter how deep her wounds ran, she would never give up. With a deep, steadying breath, she met Olivia's gaze head-on, her eyes burning with a newfound determination. "You're right, Olivia," she said, her voice ringing with conviction. "I may never be worthy of Kaden's love, but that doesn't matter anymore. This child is mine, and I will protect him with every fibre of my being." Olivia's smile faltered, her eyes narrowing with displeasure. "You think you can just walk away?" she hissed, her voice laced with venom. "You think Kaden will let you go that easily?" Elena squared her shoulders, her chin lifting defiantly. "I don't care what Kaden wants," she said, her voice unwavering. "I'm done being a pawn in his game. It's time I took control of my own life." With those words, she turned on her heel, her steps purposeful and unyielding. Damien fell into step beside her, his presence a steadying force in the face of Olivia's wrath. As they disappeared into the shadows, Elena could feel the weight of Olivia's glare burning into her back, a silent promise of retribution. But for the first time in her life, she didn't care. She was done being a victim, done being a pawn in someone else's twisted game. From this moment on, she would forge her own path, no matter the cost. And if Kaden or Olivia dared to stand in her way, she would burn their world to the ground.
