Chapter 12

846 Words
The crackling of the fire was the only sound that broke the heavy silence, its flickering flames casting dancing shadows across the cabin's walls. Elena sat huddled in a chair, her son cradled protectively against her chest, her eyes fixed on the twin flames that danced in the hearth. Ethan and Damien sat across from her, their expressions solemn, their gazes flickering between her and the fire as if gauging her reaction. At last, Ethan cleared his throat, the sound jarring in the stillness. "I know you must have a million questions, Elena," he murmured, his voice laced with a strange mixture of regret and determination. Elena's grip tightened on her son, her jaw clenching ever so slightly. "You could say that," she replied, her voice laced with a quiet fury that belied her outward calm. Ethan's gaze flickered to Damien, a silent communication passing between them. Then, with a slight nod, Damien leaned forward, his expression grave. "Elena," he began, his voice low and measured. "What you've been told about your past, about your family... It's all been a lie." Elena's breath caught in her throat, her heart stuttering in her chest. A lie? But how was that possible? Her entire life, her very identity, had been shaped by the stories her mother had told her, the traditions and beliefs instilled in her from birth. "What are you talking about?" she breathed, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and uncertainty. Damien's gaze held hers, his eyes burning with a fierce intensity that sent a shiver down her spine. "Your mother was not who she claimed to be," he continued, his words like a knife slicing through the veil of her reality."She was a member of a secret society, a group dedicated to preserving the ancient ways, the true ways of our kind." Elena's mind reeled, a torrent of questions rising like a tide within her. A secret society? Ancient ways? What was he talking about? As if sensing her confusion, Damien pressed on, his voice taking on a quiet urgency. "When you were born, your mother saw something in you, a spark of power that terrified her. She knew that if society discovered your true potential, they would stop at nothing to claim you, to mould you into a weapon for their cause." A tremor ran through Elena's body, her grip on her son tightening instinctively. "What are you saying?" she whispered, her voice laced with a mixture of fear and dawning realisation. Damien's expression softened, his eyes shining with a tenderness that seemed at odds with the gravity of his words. "She was trying to protect you, Elena," he murmured. "By keeping you in the dark, by raising you within the pack, she hoped to shield you from society's clutches." Elena's breath caught in her throat, her mind whirling with a torrent of emotions. All this time, her entire life had been a lie, a carefully constructed facade to keep her safe from some unseen threat. "But why?" she breathed, her voice trembling with anguish. "Why didn't she tell me the truth? Why did she let me believe that the pack, that Kaden, was my destiny?" A flicker of pain crossed Damien's face, his features etched with regret. "Because she knew that if the truth came out, if the society discovered you, they would stop at nothing to claim you," he replied, his voice laced with quiet fury. "And she couldn't bear the thought of losing you, of subjecting you to the horrors she had witnessed firsthand." Elena's breath caught in her throat, her mind reeling from the weight of his words. Horrors? What exactly was this society capable of, and whatdid it have to do with her? Before she could voice her questions, Ethan leaned forward, his expression grave. "Elena, what Damien is trying to tell you is that you're not like the others in the pack," he said, his voice laced with a quiet urgency. "You're something more, something powerful beyond measure." Elena's brow furrowed, her grip on her son tightening instinctively. "What do you mean?" she demanded, her voice laced with a mixture of fear and defiance. Ethan's gaze flickered to Damien, a silent communication passing between them. Then, with a slight nod, Damien reached out, his palm extended towards her. "Show her," he murmured, his voice laced with a quiet conviction. Elena tensed, her instincts screaming at her to recoil, to protect her son from whatever was about to unfold. But there was something in Damien's eyes, a sincerity that called to her on a primal level, that urged her to trust him, if only for a moment. With a tremulous breath, she reached out, her fingers brushing against Damien's calloused palm. In an instant, a jolt of energy surged through her, a crackling force that set every nerve ending alight. Images flashed before her eyes, visions of ancient rituals, of beings with powers she could scarcely comprehend. And at the centre of it all, a figure shrouded in shadow, its presence commanding, terrifying, and yet somehow... familiar.
