Sunshine Yellow

279 Words
It was the day of Mark's party. Ellie didn't know what to wear and her anxiety was getting the better of her. She held up dozens of slinky, glittering dresses as she stood in front of her mirror. Her mom spoiled her with the overwhelming joy of having a daughter. She wasn't the least bit perturbed that Ellie never wore any of it. She dropped each dress in a heap on her floor, lying to herself that she'd hang them all back up later. They matched the chaos of the rest of her space. It had been so long since she had the mental capacity to actually clean. She groaned, pushing her palms into her eyes dramatically before picking up the jeans she wore the day before. 'Honestly, who would even notice?' Ellie bargained with herself, vowing to at least find a clean shirt. She settled on a flowing sunshine yellow tunic. The last time she wore this, the barista at her favorite coffee shop complimented how much it brought out the blue in her eyes. She blushed a little, remembering how flustered she got in that moment. She stuttered out a thank you, before accidentally knocking the entire coffee cup all over their counter. Definitely not her finest moment, but she always felt most confident in yellow since that day. She hadn't been back to the coffee shop since, fearing the way those sweet dimples and long lashes made her heart pause for a moment. Suddenly, she felt the urge to stop for coffee before the party. She pushed that desire quickly from her mind, just as she heard the doorbell ring. Michael, perfectly on time, as always.
