A Morning with Mom

396 Words
Green eyes and soft moans filled Ellie's dreams that night. When her mom woke her up early the next morning for church, the paranoia that somehow her mother would read her thoughts was almost paralyzing. "Ellie-belly! What has gotten into you?!" her mom was waving a hand in front of her face. "Snap out of it, I don't wanna be late!" Ellie threw the blanket off her, stifling a laugh. She knew her mother's true reasons for not wanting to be late, whether the woman would admit it or not. A new preacher had been coming to their church for the last few weeks and all the single moms were in an unspoken battle over who would get the seat in the front pews, next to him. "Relax mom, not even Ethan will be there an hour and a half before the service begins." Her mother shot her a warning glance and turned back to her closet, sorting through all of her nicer dresses. "Are you looking for one that screams 'stepdaughter material'?" Ellie couldn't hide her laughter any longer. Since her father had walked out on them when Ellie was still in diapers, she'd never seen her mother become so flustered over a man. She found the entire thing endearing and mildly hilarious. "I just want to be closer to the front so I can hear better!" her mom grumbled. "You better watch your tone, young lady. You won't be young forever either." Ellie accepted the dress her mom held out, a knee length white satin gown with ruffles along the neckline. "I just love that one on you", her mom beamed. "It makes you look so grown up and mature." Ellie looked over at her mother suspiciously. "What?!" She wouldn't meet Ellie's eyes. "You're not trying to convince him that I'm grown and I'll be out of the house soon are you?" "Well I've never... ungrateful kid... she IS grown" Ellie heard her mother muttering under her breath as she left the room. For all her teasing, she really was happy for her mom. Her mother did so much for everyone around her. It was about time she had a little fun herself. Ellie checked her reflection in the mirror. She did look grown, and plain. She added some red lip stick, just for a little edge and headed out to meet her mom.
