In The Wrong Place

1745 Words
Bethany’s P.O.V. “I am here for the interview”, I said to the receptionist on the ground floor of Knight’s building. “Your name, please”, she asked me in a polite tone. “It’s Bethany Hopkins”, I told her my name in the same tone. “56th floor from that lift”, she told me the floor and also indicated towards a lift at the end of the corridor. “Thank you”, I thanked her and then walked in the direction of that lift. There were so many people standing outside the lift. I could see a few candidates among them too. I was surprised to see them because they were all dolled up with heavy makeup. I looked down at myself and pursed my lips into a thin line. I had applied only lip gloss and eyeliner in the name of make-up and was in a conservative formal pant suit, whereas two girls were in semi-formal skirt suits but the length of their skirts was really low. I didn’t understand whether they had come here for the interview or for a fashion parade. The door of the lift opened and we all entered the lift. I looked for the button and saw that someone had already pressed that 56th button. I was in the middle of the crowd. I decided to stay glued to my place until I reached my destination. I was clutching my file of all my certificates hard in my grip in front of my chest. I felt someone staring at me from behind but didn’t look behind because I knew who they were. They were the same girls who were waiting for the lift with me. The company was holding so many interviews I think because so many around me had folders in their hands and they were also anxious and nervous as I was. A few of them got off on different floors. My anxiety increased with every passing second because I was still with those two girls behind me. After the fiftieth floor, there were only five of us and all of us were women. It was clear that I was not getting this job because I was nowhere to be as good-looking as they were. We all walked out of the lift on the same floor and my anxiety increased by ten folds when I saw more than twenty girls and women sitting in the waiting room. I went straight to the desk where a pretty girl was collecting the names of all the candidates. I was really surprised that the whole setup was only to choose entry-level employees. “Hi, my name is Bethany Hopkins”, I gave my name to the same girl in a nervous tone. She passed a sweet smile to me first and then looked for my name on her laptop. “You are number 24, Bethany. Wish you all the best”, she told me and wished me luck too in a sweet voice. “Thanks, ma’am”, I thanked her and then looked for the space to sit. I found one and went straight there. All of the women sitting around me were looking so professional and the way they presented themselves it was giving me a nervous breakdown. It was my first interview and it was not necessary that I would get this job. Yet I was a little disappointed with myself right now. I couldn’t say anything about clothes, because I didn't like revealing clothes, not in the office, but I should have applied makeup on my face. I was beautiful and with a light makeup touch, I would look more beautiful than anyone present here. “God, Beth…. Get a grip on yourself. It’s just an interview… no need to panic. Everything will be okay”, I pepped talk with me internally while fidgeting my fingers on my lap over the file. One by one, they started going inside but when they came out, they looked disappointed and it made me more nervous. Before coming here, I had prepared a questionnaire for me related to this work and practiced all night so that I would not embarrass myself in front of my interviewer. However, their disappointed look was now giving me goosebumps. After almost two hours, I was called. I cleared my throat and stood up. I straightened my suit jacket and clutched the file tightly once again. I took a few deep breaths while walking towards the room to calm myself down. After taking a long deep breath, I knocked on the door softly and opened the door. “Good morning, ma’am”, I greeted the woman sitting behind the desk in a gentle tone with a soft nervous smile. The woman looked at me and passed a sweet smile to me. I was so nervous now that I felt that I would fall down. “Good morning, Ms Hopkins… please have a seat”, she greeted me back and offered me the chair in front of her. I mumbled a thank to her and made comfortable myself on the chair in front of her. To be honest, I was feeling that I was sitting on pins and needles right now. She raised her hand towards me and I gave her my certificate file. She flipped the pages with raised brows and narrowed her eyes at a particular page then she looked at me. “I can see that you have just graduated a few days ago”, she spoke in a gentle tone and looked up at me. “Yes, ma’am…. I have finished my degree in secretarial practice with good grades”, I replied to her in a firm tone. “That’s why I am confused, Ms Hopkins”, she immediately spoke again having an amusing expression on her face. I raised my brows because her statement confused me. “You have finished your degree in secretarial practice and also you have a second major in business administration but you applied for PA for the CEO?” she questioned me in an amusing tone and my eyes shrank in confusion. “No ma’am… I have applied for the entry-level in the secretarial department. The copy of my application form is at the end”, I told her truthfully and indicated to look at the end of the file. She immediately flipped the pages and her eyes narrowed once again. PA for the CEO? Did it mean that PA for Mr Hunter Knight? My heart skipped several beats in a second. PA of the devil himself? No way… I couldn’t apply for that position, not in my dreams. I saw a frown appearing on the lady sitting in front of me. “Uhhh… I think… there is something… something that I need to take care of first, Ms Hopkins. Please wait for me”, she said and then stood up. “Uhhh… ma’am”, I called her with hesitation. She was about to walk away but stopped near me. “I… I didn’t know your name, ma’am”, I asked her and she smiled again. “I forgot to tell you my name, honey. I am Rachel Young and you can call me Rachel. I will be back in a few minutes”, she told me her name in a gentle voice with a pleasant smile and then walked out of the room. “I didn’t understand what happened here but I did have this idea that this was not the place where I should have been. The question that she asked about applying for PA was still lingering at the back of my mind. I crossed checked about the interview venue at two places. There was no way that both the girls at the reception desks would tell me the wrong place. Something was really wrong here and I didn’t know what to do now. If this interview was for PA then it meant that I was in the wrong place. How did this happen? Suddenly the door opened again and I flinched at my place as I zoned out for a few seconds. “I am sorry to keep you waiting Ms Hopkins. Let’s continue with the interview”, I heard Rachel’s gentle voice again and looked behind. I saw her coming back to her place and I just followed her movements. “Please call me, Bethany, Ms Young”, I asked her in a gentle tone to ease the tension in the room. She was calm and composed but I could feel that she was a little pissed right now. She sat down in her previous place and then cleared her throat. “Let me tell you the situation first, Bethany. To be honest, I am sorry that you are in the wrong place right now but this is not your fault. A mistake from our end (she emphasized the whole sentence). Still, you have to go through this interview for the post of PA for Mr Knight. I am sure that you have a clear idea whom I am talking about right now”, she told me the situation in a firm and calm tone. “But, Rachel… I… don’t think that… that I am qualified for this post. According to my qualifications and the fact that I recently graduated, I am really not suitable for this position. Please, if you can help me, then help me to get interviewed for the position according to my qualifications”. I refused to get interviewed for that position and pleaded with her to change my interview course. She looked at me apologetically. “I am sorry, honey… but I couldn’t help here because this interview is specially asked by Mr Knight himself after I explained the situation here”, she told me the situation in an apologetic tone and I sucked my breath. I was clear that I was not getting job here in my dream company. I sighed and then looked at Rachel helplessly. “I am really sorry, honey”, she apologized again and I passed a tight smile to her. “Let’s get over this then”, I said in a firm tone accepting my fate here and she raised her brows with an amusing expression on her face again.
