The whole apartment felt too quiet. Too still. And Esme felt so alone, she was used to being alone since she lose her parents years ago but Dave’s presence made it all feel better but now that it was obviously over between them she was all alone again in the world. She curled tighter into herself on the couch with her legs drawn up under an oversized sweater. The only light came from her phone screen, still glowing in her hand. Her eyes were red. She had cried until she couldn’t anymore. Her skin felt too tight, her chest sore from how many times she’d told herself she’d imagined everything.
