I gave him space. That's what I kept telling myself, anyway. I mean, taking a step back seemed like the sensible thing to do, the reasonable choice. Especially after what had almost happened on the sofa, you know, in the dark, with the candles flickering and the storm raging outside, and his face so close to mine that I could feel his breath on my skin. It was all just a bit too much, and space seemed like the only way to clear my head and get some perspective. I would often leave the room when he walked in, and I made sure to eat breakfast before he came downstairs.
