The first thing I was aware of was the light. The morning light crept in through the curtains, soft and grey, like it was still making up its mind about the day. Everything looked a bit suspended, caught between the night that was gone and the morning that was still coming. It was that special kind of light that happens when the sun is just starting to rise, and nothing is quite sure what's going to happen next. The world was still waking up, and the light was like a gentle whisper, saying "good morning" to all the things that were still sleepy. In this quiet moment, anything seemed possible, and the day was full of promise. The next thing that registered with me was that my hand was still clasped around someone else's. As I slowly came to, I felt really awake for the first time in days
