Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Sunday morning brought reflection and quiet to Jennifer's world. As she sipped her tea, sitting in the light of the morning sun, she considered what had happened yesterday. Looking down, she could see the clear outline of fingers in the bruise on her wrist. Last night could have gone disastrously wrong had Gary and Kirk not come and been there when Jared had decided to act up. Maybe the b**m world was not for her. With that thought she smiled and reached for her laptop. Her mission for today was to look at the other sites and see if she could arrange a meeting with a nice man sooner rather than later. Maybe if she found someone kind, her desires would be abated, and she could find peace, which is her ultimate goal. At first, she was going to delete the b**m profile in its entirety, but seeing the message icon next to Coops name she hesitated. Even though they had only exchanged a few messages, she was drawn to him and did not want to disappear without a word. Opening the message, she could not hold back the smile that formed as she read his words from last night. “Sleep well Baby Girl. When you get this message, I want you to consider the following questions if you will. You say that you are a natural submissive, but how do you know? What has drawn you to this point in your life? What type of relationship are you looking for? It is questions like these that will guide you as you move forward. Just remember you have a new friend that is here to give you the other side's perspective anytime you need it.” Thinking hard, she decided to take a risk and sent him one last message. “Good morning Coop. I will cut right to the chase. I do not know if making the profile on this site was the right move for me. I am thinking that I need to walk before I can run and that I need to stick to more vanilla sites before I explore this further. I did not want to just deactivate my account without telling you. With that in mind, I will be changing the status of this profile to private. It looks like when I do this I will not be able to send and receive messages. I do not want to pressure you, but if you would like to continue our conversations, I would be more than open to it. Feel free to text me at (720) 370-8554. Thank you and have a wonderful day.” As soon as she hit send, she moved the cursor to the top of the screen and deactivated the account. The action made her feel decisive, and she was happy with the decision. Clicking on the bookmarked pages at the top of the screen, Jennifer started to review the messages that she had received, seeing a couple that she was interested in exploring. She sent them each a good morning message, asking them questions to see if they were interested in conversations before she dedicated herself to reviewing profiles until all the faces began to blend together. A quick glance at the clock showed her that she had wasted over two hours of her morning on this pursuit, and it was time for her to start her day in ernest. As she walked through her room she caught sight of the gift that Gary had given her sitting on her night stand, charging light glowing in the curtained room. With a smirk, she quickly unplugged the USB cord from the outlet and placed it, along with the toy, securely in the top drawer before moving toward her closet to get her clothing for the day. After gathering what she needed, Jennifer jumped into the shower, cranking the temp to full heat. She allowed the water to relax her muscles. She stayed in the same position for as long as the water was hot. When it began to cool she climbed out, drying herself before dressing for the day. When she reached her bedroom she grabbed her cell phone and shot a quick text message off to Gary to thank him for the gift, and asking him to never do it again. She grinned as she wrote the message, knowing that it would cause her best friend to laugh because they both knew that if he wanted to he would continue to give her as many embarrassing gifts and he could think of. She went about her day finishing the chores that she had not gotten done the previous afternoon and just enjoying the quiet of the day. Too often people seemed to think that they needed constant noise and activity, but Jennifer cherished the quiet moments that filled her life. By early afternoon there was nothing left to do, so she allowed herself to grab her laptop and look at the replies that she may have received. To her surprise, she had a response from one of the men that she had messaged. His name was Bob Brooks, an accountant from two towns over, and she had liked that he had been open and somewhat funny in his profile. Rereading it to make sure she was responding properly, she smiled at the small bits of self-deprecating humor. It read: Hello there, I'm Bob—a self-proclaimed aficionado of all things ordinary. If you're looking for excitement, look elsewhere because I'm here to bring you the joy of monotony. Hobbies: Watching paint dry (literally, it's quite fascinating) Counting sheep (great for insomnia) Reading the dictionary (expanding my vocabulary one word at a time) Long walks on the sidewalk (not the beach, too sandy) Favorite Activities: Sitting quietly in coffee shops and staring at my phone (but not actually doing anything on it) Organizing my sock drawer by color and thickness Watching reruns of the most generic TV shows imaginable Going to bed promptly at 9:00 PM (because who needs nightlife?) What I'm Looking For: I seek someone who shares my passion for the mundane. If you can appreciate the art of blending into the background and find joy in the most uneventful of situations, we might just be a match made in a very ordinary heaven. Ideal Date: Picture this—dinner at a chain restaurant followed by a riveting discussion on tax deductions. Alternatively, we could bond over comparing different shades of beige paint at the hardware store. Exciting, right? Fun Fact: I once fell asleep during a fireworks display. If my profile hasn't put you to sleep already, feel free to reach out. Let's embrace the dullness of life together! Disclaimer: Extreme excitement or spontaneity may cause discomfort. Please proceed with caution. Jennifer grinned once again, seeing the humor that had drawn her to this man in the first place. She replied to his message quickly and was happy to see that he was online. After the pleasantries were complete, she decided to take the initiative and ask him out. “Would you be interested in meeting for coffee one day this coming week? I know it's not as engaging as comparing paint colors, but it might be a good opportunity for us to meet and get to know one another.” His response was quick and positive, and they made plans to meet for coffee on Tuesday morning before he had to be at work. With the plans made, Jennifer closed her laptop, proud of herself for moving forward with her plans to be happy, but deep inside she knew that this was not going to go the way that she wanted.
