Chapter 6
Gary had given her a ride home from the club, taking her car and leaving his SUV with Kirk. At first, she had protested, but when Gary had simply taken the keys from her hand, Jennifer felt nothing but relief that she was not alone, and she could allow her mind to drift rather than focus on trying to drive. This was why she did not trust her judgment. Clearly, she had no idea what a good man was or how to find one. With a snort she thought to herself that a good, straight, dominant man might be a myth.
As she went over every moment of the evening, she realized that she should have left as soon as he did not attempt to contact her when he was running late. By the time he had overruled her drink choice, it was already too late. Remembering the dark look in his eyes, she suppressed a shiver of fear. Had she been alone she did not think the evening would have ended so easily. He had seemed to be quite determined to get his way and had not wanted to see her leave. Rubbing her arm where he had grasped her, she felt the swelling that told her it would undoubtedly leave a bruise. Part of her was glad to have a reminder of what could happen if she was not cautious in the future.
This thought brought her up short and made her think about the message that Coop had sent, and his concern about her date following her home. At the time she had thought his concern unwarranted and extreme, but tonight’s revelations seemed to lend it credence. Maybe he had not been trying to be high-handed and controlling like she had first thought. With him on her mind, Jennifer slid her hand into her purse, wrapping her fingers around her phone. Not wanting Gary to wonder, she did not pull it out, but just having it in her grasp acted like a security blanket to Jennifer, offering her comfort as she worked through her feelings. Tonight had not gone as planned, but part of Jennifer was thrilled. She may not have found a man, but she suspected that she was developing a friendship that would be worth more than a dozen would-be Doms.
Unsurprisingly, Gary was the first to break the silence in the car, momentarily taking his hand from the wheel to rub her knee. “Look at it this way. You got the worst out of the way right up front, it has to get better from here.” It was clear that he was trying to put a smile on his face, but was doing a poor job of it.
Rolling her eyes, Jennifer turned her head away to look out of the window. “Well you have that half right, I certainly found the worst right out of the gate.” As they sat in silence on the ride home, Jennifer was jolted by the sound of an incoming message. Recognizing the sound of the alert, she acted as if she had not heard it and counted the minutes until they were at her place. All she wanted to do was get home, shower, put on her pajamas, and crawl into bed with her laptop. She needed to message Coop and apologize for being snotty, that is if he was even interested in speaking to her again.
Gary reached over and put his hand on her knee. “Well, you know I am always here to be a shoulder to cry on, and knowing that this might happen, I just might have stopped at the store and purchased you a little present before we headed to the club.” There was a tone in his voice that caused Jennifer to refocus her attention back to Gary in the driver's seat.
“And what pray tell might that be?” Even as the words left her mouth Jennifer realized that she might not want to know the answer.
The slow smile that came over his face confirmed that fear as he turned his head to wink at her, his face taking a devilish glow from the red light they were stopped at. “When we get back to your place, hop into the shower. By the time you are out, Kirk will be here with my car, and your present.” His attention was drawn once more to the road as the lights turned green, and they started moving again.
Knowing that her friend would never spill a surprise, Jennifer stuck her tongue out at him, crossing her arms, and looking out the window once again. She struggled to maintain her pouting body language because as much of a mess as the night had been she knew that Gary was there, and it could have been a worse night. She could have been suckered into going home with that prick.
Finally, allowing herself to relax a little, Jennifer reached over and turned on the radio, instantly joining the song at the top of her volume and nudging Gary to join in. The rest of the drive home was filled with off-key singing and sly smiles. No matter what else they would face, they would always have their friendship.
The front porch light stood glowing in the night as they walked up, arms linked, towards the navy door. It stood like a soldier, protecting her home from invaders and the outside world. Without a word she let them both in and headed straight for her bedroom and the shower that Gary had mentioned. Knowing that he was still downstairs, and that Kirk would be here soon, she did not take the time to soak in a hot bath, rinsing herself as quickly as possible before hopping out, sliding on an old oversized tee shirt to cover her damp body, and topping it with her warm robe.
A glance in the mirror proved to Jennifer that she looked as sloppy as she expected, but she could not bring herself to care about it. She was home and after the way her Saturday had gone, she felt that she had earned the right to be as comfortable, and sloppy, as she wanted. Quickly pulling her riot of damp curls back and into a bonnet she headed downstairs, scared and curious about the present that Gary had mentioned.
Her steps paused as she walked into her living room to find Gary perched on Kirk’s lap, their bodies pressed close as they kissed. With a slight smile she watched, loving that her best friend had found a man that seemed to be a perfect match for Gary. Kirk's calm demeanor acted as the perfect canvas for Gary’s exuberant personality, and his calming approach could sooth her friend's ruffled feathers. As she watched, Gary's hand suddenly started moving down, seeming to reach for the other man's belt, causing Jennifer to clear her throat. Over the years, there was no part of Gary that she had not seen, but she did not need or want to see Kirk undressed on her couch.
The sound rolled through the room causing the men to spring apart, their breathing labored. As Kirk ran his hand through his hair, both smoothing it out and giving him the chance to calm down, Jennifer lost control of herself and started laughing.
“Really Kirk? You? I expected it from the little slut there, but I expected better self-control from you.” The mountain of a man blushed, his face turning a shade of red that she had never seen before.
Not responding to her comment, or the hooting laughter that was coming from Gray, Kirk simply raised an eyebrow in her direction. With a shake of his head he reached for a brown paper bag that Jennifer had failed to notice, leaning against the side of the couch.
“Just for that, I think I will stick around while you open the lovely gift that the troublemaker got you.” His words had an ominous ring as he slid the bag in Jennifer's direction, motioning her to pick it up.
Gary protested the name of troublemaker but sat back on the couch to watch Jennifer's reaction. When he had seen her yesterday, Gary had known that his best friend was struggling. He could not get the despondent look on her face out of his mind all night and when he had woken up this morning he knew that he had to do something. It was not until he had spoken to Kirk that he knew what he wanted to do for her and on the way to the club they had stopped at their favorite adult shop.
With the knowledge of her secret desires, Gary had decided to have fun with Jennifer, purchasing a variety of random small toys that he knew would make her blush. His smile grew as she opened the bag and quickly shut it again with a gasp.
“Gary!” Her scandalized scream triggered both men to break out in hysterical laughter. They watched her face as they tried to contain themselves. She shook her head before looking back down into the bag in her hands.
It contained furry handcuffs in the most hideous shade of pink she had ever seen, n****e clamps, flavored lube, and a medium sized white box at the bottom. Given her friends' laughter, she decided against pulling it out before they left.
“Thank you, I think.” Her exasperated words came out as she crossed the room to wrap her arms around Gary's large frame. He might be over the top, but there was no one she loved more.
Returning the hug, Gary and Kirk moved towards the front door. It was late, and they knew that Jennifer's social battery was running on empty. With final goodbyes, the men left, climbing into Gary’s SUV and pulling away into the night. Jennifer held up her hand one last time before going back into her house and locking the door.
It had been a long night and what she should really do is get to sleep. Even knowing this, she smiled as she headed for the stairs, her bag of illicit presents in her hand. Before bed, she wanted to check her messages and see if maybe fate had been on her side and Coop had not taken offense to her previous message.
