Chapter 4
Jennifer was on the edge of her seat as she waited for her best friend’s reaction to the revelation in front of him. He had not made a sound as he tilted the computer further in his own direction so he could concentrate on the screen. He was laser focused, only moving the slightest bit to scroll further down the screen. He did not betray his thoughts in so much as a flicker of his eyelid.
“Please Gary, give me something here. You are the only person that I have told about this and I need to know that you do not think that I am broken.” The words were torn from her as Jennifer was no longer able to maintain her composure. His lack of reaction made her unable to sit there and watch as he silently read the profile she stood and began to pace.
After a few more minutes, Jennifer broke down and looked back at his face. She was shocked to see that there were tears in Gary’s eyes as he looked at her. “I am so sorry. I never realized that you felt like this. You are so put together and in control that often it was just easier to let you lead. I never thought about you needing to relax, mainly because I have never seen you relax.” His voice cracked and he spoke. He lightly pushed the laptop further onto the table before standing and wrapping his arms around Jennifer, pulling her into his arms to provide comfort for both of them.
Jennifer broke down in sobs. Her greatest wish was to be able to tell her best friend who she was, and it went better than she could ever have wished for. He did not judge her by her feelings or think that they made her weak. More importantly, he did not point out that these desires are how her ex managed to manipulate her so completely.
“None of that, Gary. How could you have known if I never told you.” Wiping away her tears, she grinned, allowing a slight giggle to escape her.
With one more hug Gary pulled her back tightly into his embrace. "I should have known because I am your person, and you are mine. Something like this should have been obvious."
Joining her in the change of mood, Gary grinned down at Jennifer. “Well, with this new information, we have some work to do.”
“We do?” Jennifer raised her eyebrows at her best friend, realizing that now that he knew this about her, he might be even more difficult to deal with.
'We most certainly do! This profile is eloquent, but this photo is a disaster. I have known you for years and I would not ever recognize you because of that. Not to mention you have minimized so many of your amazing traits.” He gestured to her as he spoke. It was clear that he was not letting this go until she allowed him to make some changes.
A small smile slipped from her face as she sat back on the couch joining Gary as he picked up the laptop from its place on the coffee table. “Give me a break on the picture, I was taking it myself and I did not want to be recognized if one of my clients saw this profile.”
Tilting his head to the side, Gary looked a little saddened by her statement. “There is nothing to be ashamed of but, I guess I understand your reasoning. Plus, while rough, clearly this profile is at least a little effective, your in basket has over a dozen messages in it.”
Shocked, Jennifer leaned forward, looking at the screen in shock. “Really! Before we go redoing the profile, let's look at these responses. I cannot believe that so many people replied.”
Gray smiled and moved the cursor to the highlighted envelope icon in the corner of the screen, opening the first of her messages to start reading. It was from a thirty-year old man from the Colorado Springs area with the username of Dominant Lover. As she read, Gary did not hesitate to start giving his opinions.
“He’s decent looking, no obvious punctuation or grammar issues in his message.” As he muttered, he clicked the button to open the man’s profile. Instantly they both broke out laughing and said “no”. The profile contained numerous images of the man with various floggers and whips. His bio was that of a clear sadist, something that Jennifer was not looking for. “That’s just…..wow.” Gary was unable to come up with a clear reply for this profile and continued to stare at it until, laughing, Jennifer reached over and hit the next button.
This pattern continued with them rejecting each message either because of the content of the message or because of the person’s profile. When there were just three left to open, Jennifer was starting to believe that this entire process was a waste of her time and she should never have attempted it.
Opening the next message, Jennifer had to giggle and cover her mouth. Gary was instantly confused because the picture was of a man in his late thirties or early forties, leaning on a motorcycle. There was nothing special or odd about the photo except that it would look more normal on a person’s f*******: than a b**m dating site. He pulled the computer toward himself, trying to see what she found so funny but he just saw a pretty standard profile. He turned his attention back to Jennifer, giving her a blank stare.
“Seriously, what is wrong with you? You never lose control like this?” His exasperated words just made her giggle harder, unable to get the words out. Shaking her head, Jennifer managed to control her giggles before speaking, her breath coming in slight gasps and tears visible in her eyes. “Close it quickly, before I want to read it. That is one of my clients and I will never be able to work with him the same way again. See? This is why I did not include my face in the profile.” The look on his face caused Jennifer to start giggling again, only for Gary to join her this time. Laughing, they closed the message before opening the next.
The username simply said “Coop” and there was no picture to go along with the message or profile.
“Hello. Thank you for your honesty and clarity when you were writing your profile. I was drawn to the way you talked about what submission is to you. I believe that it is the greatest gift that can be given from a sub to their Dom. It is that gift that shows the strength and control that the sub has, and the act of giving it shows trust and confidence in their Dom. In my experience, sub’s desire a safe environment to allow themselves to be what they naturally are. Dom’s on the other hand, are looking for the gift of submission. I love the rush that comes from knowing that my sub desires me, and is giving me control, because she trusts me to take care of her, no matter what. I would love to get to know you more. Thank you. Coop.”
Looking over at Gary, who smiled with raised eyebrows before clicking on the button that would open his profile. Instantly Jennifer groaned when a few things popped out to her. First, he lived in Ohio, far from her current position, and next was his age. At thirty-two Jennifer had always been drawn to older men, but this profile had him listed at fifty. Despite that, every word he wrote seemed to speak to her soul. When he talked about looking for a partner, someone to submit to him but also to be with him, his words drew her like a moth to a flame. Knowing that there was no point responding, Jennifer gave up on the idea. Shaking her head, Jennifer clicked the close window button and opened the last message. Gary did not seem to notice that she could not bring herself to delete the message.
This one was from a reasonably articulate Dom in her area and was straight to the point. “Hello, I am Jared. I enjoyed your profile and would love to meet you for drinks some time.” Below the message was contact information using a popular messaging app. The photo was of an average looking man, near her age, and his profile seemed generic.
“Not quite as interesting as the last one, but much more appropriate.” Gary grabbed Jennifer's phone and handed it to her. “Here you go. Invite him to Club Vinyl tonight. I will get Kirk to meet me there where we can act as backup.”
Jennifer hesitated, something about the message did not seem right to her. She would much rather get to know him longer then try to meet him right away. Rather than letting her fear make the decision for her, she quickly opened the messaging app and began typing a message.
“Hello, my name is Jennifer and I received your message. I would love to meet you and get to know you a bit as well. Would you be interested in meeting at Club Vinyl for a drink this evening?” After hitting send Jennifer turned to Gary and gave him a fake smile. She was so concerned about what she had just done that she wished she could call the message back.
Quickly, the messaging app on her phone dinged, causing her to jump. It simply replied with a time, “8 O’clock.”
Gary cheered next to her, but somehow Jennifer knew that she was making a mistake. Nothing about his profile drew her the way that Coop’s did. No matter how inappropriate, it seemed to draw her to it for some strange reason. Giving up on the idea of responding, she closed down her computer and followed Gary into her bedroom to choose something to wear tonight.
