Chapter 3 A Nocturnal Intrusion

With an impatient sigh, I shrugged off my jacket and stepped out of the room, my mind already racing. In the dim light of the hallway, I spotted Sofia crouched beside my daughter, Cici, her smile wide as she shared the news that Cici would soon have the role of an elder sister. My demeanor shifted instantly to one of icy composure. "Exactly how did you gain entry here?" Sofia, unperturbed by my chilly reception, tossed a casual look my way. "Evening, Yvonne. Sorry for the late visit. Mr. Scott kindly passed me the code." My hands clenched involuntarily at her words. That worthless Daniel had even given my home's access code to this woman. Choosing to ignore her, I diverted my focus to Cici, who seemed oblivious to the meaning behind Sofia's announcement. "Cici, let Mommy take you back to your room. It's time for your French lessons, sweetheart. Your tutor's already waiting." With that, I effortlessly gathered Cici into my arms. Just as I was turning to leave, Sofia, cradling her pregnant belly, interrupted, "Yvonne, little ones need their rest at night. Why the rush for French lessons? When Cici grows up, she'll just need a dowry and a suitable husband. What use are French or riding lessons? The fortune will belong to the child Daniel and I have." My hold on Cici instinctively grew firmer. Sofia's penchant for provocation was nothing new. Ever since I caught her and Daniel in their affair five years prior, she never missed a chance to needle me. She would send videos of intimate moments with Daniel, even scenes of them indulging in bedroom antics. She provided clips from high-profile events where Daniel introduced her as his wife. And now, she flaunted footage from her pregnancy journey, with Daniel by her side, tenderly promising her a future baby. In one particularly hurtful video, Daniel was seen intimately comforting her as they awaited treatment in a hospital corridor. Sofia was cozily wrapped in Daniel's arms when he murmured, "Trust me. Let's have a baby together. I might not be able to offer you marriage, but I can certainly provide our baby with my presence. Given our genes, we could bring a remarkable child into this world. I'll personally dedicate myself to teaching our child." "What about Cici?" inquired Sofia. A sly grin spread across Daniel's face. "When Cici is older, we'll marry her off. Yvonne took three years to have her, so how special can she be? A child raised by someone like Yvonne won't achieve much." Those words from Daniel were the final nail in the coffin of my feelings for him. Reflecting on that painful moment, I shielded Cici's ears before facing Sofia. "A mere mistress with an unborn baby dares to flaunt herself before me? The existence of your baby isn't even guaranteed, yet you dream of gaining the family inheritance?" To my astonishment, Sofia began to cry instantly. "Yvonne, how could you say such things? I was simply saying Cici's too young to be learning French. I'm concerned for her. I intended to offer advice out of kindness, yet you demean my child as illegitimate. How cruel can you be?" I narrowed my eyes slightly. Before I could reply, Daniel's impatient voice cut through the air. "Yvonne, what's wrong with you? Can you go a single day without picking a fight? If you're that restless, enroll in yoga or flower arranging classes tomorrow." I clenched my jaw tightly to prevent myself from walking over and slapping him. After several deep breaths, I regained my composure and took Cici back to our room. Once the door was shut, I grabbed my phone and called Harper. "Inform Daniel the shareholders' meeting is rescheduled for tomorrow. Also, get dismissal notices ready for both Daniel as chairman and Sofia. I've had enough of their nonsense!"
