Brooke’s P.O.V
“Boo!” I grinned menacingly as I jumped out of the shadows.
I could tell just from her shocked expression that lone wolf forest girl hadn’t seen me coming.
Which made perfect sense, considering how her head was probably still in the clouds after smooching Lazar.
“Creep much?” There was obvious fear in her eyes, but she tried masking it with the attitude.
Which I found confusing for a second.
In my head, she still needed to be taught a lesson. Especially now that she had brought the lycans into a feud that had nothing to do with them. It was law. All new werewolves without packs on campus went through initiation. She was no different.
But seeing her standing tall and ready to stand up for herself like that, kind of earned her a bit of respect from me.
Except, I wasn’t ready to allow even that distract me from my mission.
“You’re the little lone grey werewolf from the woods, aren’t you?” I stood squarely in front of her.
She had been rushing to class when I initially jumped her, but that sure was no longer an option on the table for her. At least not until I had delivered my message.
She blinked and looked away.
“It’s Rosy, isn’t it?” I chuckled, because I was spot on and we both knew there was no more hiding for her. For I had found her out.
“Lucia’s roomie? The one I just saw smacking lips with lycan Lazar?”
“And I take it you’re the bully loser that she’s sleeping with?” She folded her arms over her chest.
“Brooks, is it?” I could tell that she was being provocative.
Her very eyes were daring me to do something. Because she knew that I couldn’t. At least not right where everyone could see us.
Not without phasing too, which could pose an even bigger risk. Considering that our campus was one for both the paranormal creatures and normal human beings. Who had no idea whatsoever that their beloved friends shape shifted and stalked the woods at night, while they slept in their beds- completely oblivious.
“It’s Brooke, you freak.” Seeing how smart she was and how confident she was getting at standing up to me, pushed my buttons in all the wrong ways.
“Oh, yeah?” She stared right into my eyes, right before taking a step closer to me. Almost as if she were sizing me up.
“So what do you want then, Brooke?” She asked, without blinking.
“Let me guess, to corner and torture me? Right here, in broad daylight? In front of everyone too?”
When I hesitated, she walked right around me and whispered. “I didn’t think so.”
She was so full of herself, it made me groan with suppressed anger.
Time for theatrics was over, I decided. She needed to know that she was playing with fire and certain lines weren’t to be crossed.
“While I admire how ballsy you’ve gotten in a matter of days, I gotta say,” I began as I fell in step with her. Smiling by her side at everyone we came across, as if our exchange was nothing but a friendly conversation.
“This morning was the last time I saw you with a lycan,” I sternly informed. “Let alone kissing one.”
“You’ve suddenly promoted yourself from bully to being my dad now?” She bitingly remarked with a scoff.
“You wish,” I sarcastically matched her tone.
“The thing is, this entire town is werewolf territory. Lycans are only allowed to walk these grounds because of a treaty between our great grand ancestors and theirs. Being in a relationship with one of ours, breaks that treaty.”
Her eyes grew into saucers for a moment, almost as if she hadn’t been aware of that fact.
Judging from her not being a native, I was quite certain that she was in the darkness- when it came to how our town operated.
“What does that even mean?” Genuine curiosity and fear replaced her earlier attitude.
“In plain English?” I laughed briefly, excited that the message was finally getting across.
“If you and Sam continue sleeping together… it won’t end well, little one. In fact, blood will spill.”
“We’re not sleeping tog-”
She started to explain with a reddened face, but I didn’t care what else she had to say. My point had been made and that was that.
“Hey!” I laughed and threw my hands up. “I don’t want to know all the freaky details about your twisted taboo s*x life. We get it, you get off on crossing those lines. And you’ve had your fun, little one. But it’s time for you to end it, before things turn real ugly in your name.”
I too had a class of my own that morning. And so without awaiting a response from the shocked Rosy, I hurried away- leaving her rooted to the spot.
Rosy’s P.O.V
After finally starting my morning on an amazing note, I hadn’t foreseen things turning out the way they had just done.
Sam and I were just beginning to share an understanding.
We were so close to begin a chapter of getting to know each other better, without the earlier reservations.
His kiss that morning had been so full of promises.
We were in a great place. At last! One that I had been longing for, since I discovered my feelings for him.
And all of it was quickly turning out to be a paper flame, dying right in the palms of my hands.
I loved him with every fiber of my being. But was that enough? I racked my mind as I absentmindedly sat in class.
Was my love for him worth getting him in trouble with the town’s elders, or even worse- killed?
What kind of love would that be, if I even risked finding out the dangers of the aftermath?
Once again, tears stung my eyes.
It was almost a sick joke how everything about the guy made me cry. My inability to be with him. Distance from him. And right in that moment- he had finally warmed up to the idea of seeing where things go, and there I was- crying again.
Goodness, at what point did the sorrow end?
Samuel’s P.O.V
“Everything okay, man?” Craig startled me with the question, as he appeared from behind me.
“You seem a bit keyed up,” he observed, referring to my pacing the living room.
“Just have a lot on my mind,” I shrugged, hoping he’ll let it go.
“Why?” He sat on the couch and grabbed the video games’ console.
“Hot date tonight?” I admit, he was more observant than I gave him credit for.
“Just a talk with Ro,” I said.
When he gave me a curious look, I tried throwing him off my trail.
“About, you know… stuff.”
We hadn’t discussed everything we needed to, and the last thing I needed was to supply my blabbermouth housemate with inaccurate details.
“You don’t say,” the i***t downright laughed at my nervousness, carefully chosen words and the sudden stutter.
“You must really like her, if you’re this bouncy.” He grinned and started up the game.
“I do,” I muttered to myself and headed to the door.
I was about half an hour early. So when no one answered her door, I waited outside patiently.
Until that waiting turned into an hour and an hour into two.
Where the hell was she?
I was upset at first, because how dare she stands me up when we made plans? Especially because I was sure without a shadow of doubt that she was a willing participant to our plan making that morning.
In fact, she seemed to look forward to it too, the same way I did. We had reached the beginning of a breakthrough, for heavens’ sake!
Confusion mingled with anger for a while, until the image of the idiotic Brooke crossed my mind.
I ran across campus all the way to the woods, as if someone had lit my feet on fire.
I phased before I was fully concealed from the world of the oblivious humans behind me.
My impatience and a sense of urgency made it hard for me to keep up with appearances.
Because something bad happening to her was just a reality that I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself for, let alone survive.
“Well, well, well… Look who decided to grace us with his presence tonight.” Brooke snickered in his head voice.
Making me locate and charge right at him, until I had slammed him right against a large tree trunk with thorns.
“What did you do to her?” Rosy was nowhere to be found. It was just Brooke and his sidekicks.
“What could I have possibly done to her?” He provoked with laughter.
“Maybe she grew tired of your obsessiveness and control, Lazar. That ever cross your mind?”
The two werewolves behind me snickered.
As a lycan; I could hear all their head voices, but couldn’t access the contents of their minds. Which left me doomed. Because I couldn’t tell if they were lying and hiding something or being truthful.
Either way; the truth of the matter was, Rosy was nowhere to be found. And that alone was enough to make me lose my mind.
