CHAPTER THREE

1593 Words
As I stood paralyzed in horror, Kaidryn's huge body looming before me, his eyes blazing with an unfathomable intensity that seemed to pierce my very soul, I felt the weight of our convoluted past fall on me. The memories of our laughter, tears, and whispered vows suddenly seemed like a cruel joke, a mask for the darkness that had been lurking under the surface all along. But the voice that came from Kaidryn's lips sent shivers down my spine: deep, raspy, and dripping with malevolence. "Vynessa, you should have stayed hidden," it growled, causing a shiver across my body. I knew Kaidryn was gone, eaten by the exact darkness he had pledged to guard us against. My father's voice pierced through the tension, his words infused with a determination that contradicted the dread on his face. "We need to get out of here, now," he pushed, grasping my hand and tugging me toward the triplets, who were paralyzed in dread, their gaze fixated on Kaidryn's monstrous body. But as we turned to go, I noticed something in Kaidryn's eyes; a flash of recognition, a glimmer of the man he once was. It was a glimmer of hope, a light in the darkness, that made me pause. "Kaidryn," I said softly, my voice scarcely audible. The terrible figure hesitated. For a brief time, I saw the man I loved, trapped under the surface. "Vynessa," he said quietly back. At that moment, I knew. Kaidryn was still inside. Fighting. Struggling. Against the horror that had overtaken him. With renewed determination, I reached out. "Kaidryn, please come back to me," I begged. The response was quick. Kaidryn's gigantic figure staggered forwards. Towards me. And the triplets. But just as hope appeared to be within sight, a terrible presence came from the shadows. "Enough," it hissed. Kaidryn's enormous form fell to the ground in an instant. The figure turned towards me. "You'll never reclaim him," it scoffed. As I looked into its eyes. I witnessed my demise. As I stood paralyzed in dread, staring into the dark figure's eyes, I felt the weight of my mortality bears down on me. The air seemed to thicken, heavy with malignant purpose, and I realized I was looking into the face of pure evil. "The Triplets of Light," the creature snarled, its voice sounding like a rusted gate scraping across the concrete. "So powerful and so pure. And soon they will be mine." Its gaze shifted to my children, who cowered behind me, wide-eyed with fear. "Their powers will fuel my return, and with them, I'll reclaim this world." My heart pounded with horror as I learned the full scope of this monster's plans. It wasn't just about murdering us; it was about using the triplets' abilities to unleash a cataclysmic calamity on the planet. I realized I had to act to protect my children at whatever cost. "Never," I spat, my voice solid against the trembling that threatened to engulf me. "You'll never touch them." I pushed the triplets behind me to protect them from the monster's sight. The dark figure chuckled in a low, sinister tone that sent shivers down my spine. "You're no match for me, Vynessa," it scoffed. "I have the power of the ancients at my command." As it spoke, the air around us began to twist, and reality bent to meet the monster's dark sorcery. Lyra materialized alongside me, her panther form emitting rage. "You'll pay for what you've done to Kaidryn," she said, her eyes flashing with determination. The combat that followed was wild, with the four of us clashing in a tornado of claws, magic, and screaming. I battled with every ounce of strength I had, hoping to keep my children safe from the monster's grasp. But while the argument raged on, I felt the weight of my tiredness. The monster was too powerful, and its magic was too potent. I lurched backward, my eyesight blurred. And that was when I noticed him. Kaidryn. He struggled to his feet. His gaze riveted on me. "Vynessa," he muttered. "Run." "Run!" Kaidryn cried again, his eyes flashing with eagerness as he grabbed my arm and drew me toward the door, the triplets clinging to my legs, their small bodies shivering with fear. As we rushed through the shattered remnants of the safe house, the sound of breaking glass and collapsing concrete resonated behind us, and I knew the monster was closing in, its evil power ripping through the air like a terrible creature, destroying everything in its way. We twisted through alleys, skirted debris, and raced against the clock, the triplets' small legs unable to keep up with me, their fearful cries booming off the walls as Lyra's panther shape led the way, her eyes flashing with ferocious resolve. Kaidryn suddenly tightened his hold on my arm, his voice low and desperate, "Left!" he cried, and I swung sharply, the triplets staggering against me, their small bodies bouncing off mine like rag dolls. We careened through the tight alleyways, the monster's howl becoming louder, its evil power whirling around us like a vortex, threatening to engulf us. And then I noticed it, a generic vehicle parked by the curb, its engine softly purring, Lyra already morphing into her human shape, flinging open the door and crying, "Get in!" Kaidryn pushed me ahead, the triplets falling into the vehicle, Lyra tugging them inside as I scrambled behind, Kaidryn springing into the driver's seat, the engine roaring to life. We sped away from the monster's grip, leaving the debris of the safe home behind, but I knew we weren't secure just yet. As I looked into Kaidryn's eyes, searching for answers to the countless questions racing through my mind, I felt a rush of hope mixed with fear, wondering if we had truly escaped the monster's clutches or had only postponed the inevitable, and whether Kaidryn's love for me was strong enough to overcome the darkness that had once consumed him. The van's tires screeched as Kaidryn made a sharp turn, his gaze flicking between the road and the rearview mirror, his expression tense and guarded, and I sensed that he, too, knew we were in danger, that the enemy was closing in, its agents scattered everywhere, waiting to strike, their presence hidden in the shadows like ghosts. Lyra's voice broke through the tension, her words low and urgent, "We need to get the triplets to a secure location, now," and I nodded, my mind racing with possibilities, wondering where we could hide, who we could trust, and what lay ahead, as the landscape outside blurred into a kaleidoscope of colors, like a painting smeared by a wet brush. But it was Kaidryn's next words that sent my heart plummeting: "Vynessa, I have something to tell you," his voice tinged with hesitancy, his eyes avoiding mine, and I felt a shudder run down my spine, fearing the worst, as the van's engine stuttered, coughed, and died, plunging us into darkness. We coasted to the side of the road, the silence oppressive and heavy with unspoken secrets, and I knew that whatever Kaidryn had to say would change everything, shatter the fragile trust we had built, and leave me reeling with shock and terror like a small boat tossed about in a stormy sea. "Just as Kaidryn was about to speak, a figure stepped out of the darkness. Its eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and its presence felt dark and powerful. I knew our fate was sealed. We were cornered, and the enemy had finally found us. My heart raced with fear as I realized we were in grave danger." "Welcome, Vynessa," the figure said, the voice of the shadow full of hatred. "I've been waiting for you." The words from the figure made me tremble and then everything went dark. As I came out from the darkness into the light, I found myself in a world unlike any other, a realm of soft twilight where shadows danced like gentle whispers and the air was sweet with the scent of wonder. And I felt a thrill of excitement as I realized I was in the care of a mysterious figure who had swept us away to this enchanted land. My eyes intensely searched for Kaidryn, and my heart raced with fear as I saw him fighting against the dark chains that bound him, his eyes burning with anger and fierce protectiveness, and I knew he would do anything to keep me and our children safe. But when I turned to check on the triplets, my world stopped “They were gone, and Lyra's panther form was nowhere to be seen, abandoning me to face this monstrous creature that took pleasure in our suffering.” "Where are my children?" I thundered. The figure let out a mocking laugh: “Your precious triplets?” They're being prepared for the rituals. My heart stop functioning for a month. "Which rituals?" I blustered. The figure's grin became bigger. "The ritual that will unlock their powers," the beast growled. "And grant me unimaginable power." I knew then that I had to act fast. Before it would be too late. I summoned every ounce of strength I had. And I launched myself at the figure. But just as my hands wrapped around its throat. Everything turned black. And then I came to discovered myself in a chamber full of old artifacts. And a luminous portal that seems to lead to nowhere. And then. I overheard it. My child's voice. "Mommy?" "Help me!"
