Secrets and Letters

Elena Martins clenched her fists. Her nails dug into her palms. She followed Darwin back into the Woods' study. The marble floors shone. The chandeliers were above. It was a cold, rich place. It made her feel small. Many portraits were on the wall. They showed men with stern looks. They seemed to judge her. Big windows showed the city skyline. It was sparkling. It was a trap of money and power. She was walking into it on purpose. Jeffrey Wood sat behind the big desk. He looked relaxed. His blue eyes were on her. He still had a smug smile. Elena's stomach hurt. Her anger felt like a hot, sharp knife inside her. She remembered the college classroom. She saw the bad photos and heard the laughter. The man in front of her caused it all. He looked like he was in complete control. Darwin’s words came back to her. Fame. Big cases. A way to start her law firm. She promised to use this to ruin him. "Ready to sign?" Jeffrey asked. He slid the contract over. His voice showed his arrogance. "I'm happy you have come to your senses." Elena's hands shook with anger. "I'm signing, but my rules are still the same," she said. Her brown eyes burned into his. "I will keep working on my law firm. And no s*x for a year. Do you understand?" Jeffrey’s smile stayed the same. His eyes showed he was amused. He was a predator playing with his food. "No s*x? Fine. For now. I can wait. But you work only for Wood Enterprises. That is the main part of the deal. Don’t worry. You will get your legal dreams by helping us." Darwin came closer. His warm blue eyes were steady. "She is right, Jeffrey. Her dreams are important. This deal saves her father's history. But not at the cost of her own dreams." Elena’s chest tightened when he talked about her father. His history was what kept her strong. The idea of Jeffrey controlling her made her angry. The idea of being a pawn in his game made her angry. But she thought of her revenge. She would use this job to find out their bad secrets. She would bring him down. This thought was a fire that made her strong. She was angry and shaking. She glared at him. She grabbed the pen. She wrote her name very hard. She almost tore the paper. Jeffrey gave a winning smirk. It was hard for her to see. But she promised herself in her mind. She would turn his victory into his defeat. Back in her bedroom, Elena felt the contract’s weight. It was like a physical burden. The room was cozy before. It was her safe place. Now it felt like a temporary jail cell. Sunlight came through the window. It showed small bits of dust in the air. This was very different from the rich penthouse. The house had peeling paint and worn furniture. It was an empty shell of her father’s dreams. The contract was a cage. It was a golden prison. It tied her to the man who had hurt her. But it was also a key. She would play their game. She would smile as their lawyer. When the time was right, she would act. She would use their secrets. She would destroy the Wood family from the inside. Her anger was a cold, sharp knife. She would use it in secret. Her father’s company would live. Her dreams would rise from the Woods' ruin. The next morning, Elena’s phone buzzed. The sound woke her up from a bad sleep. Jane’s name was on the screen. It was her best friend. Jane's voice was sharp with worry when she answered. "Elena, what is going on? You have been quiet since you talked about that meeting. I'm worried! Please tell me you did not agree to anything crazy." Elena sat up. The sunlight came through her window. It felt warm and good. She felt guilty. She had not told Jane for too long. "I'm sorry," she said softly. Her voice was still thick with sleep. "It's been crazy. I... I'm marrying Jeffrey Wood. It is a contract to save Martins Tech. I'll work for their company. And... no s*x for a year. At least, that is what I tried to get." Jane gasped. She was in shock. "Marrying him? After what he did to you in college? The shame, the taunts—why would you ever do that again?" Elena's throat tightened. The truth came out like a flood. "It's not just the company," she said. Her voice shook with real emotion. "He ruined me back then. That joke. He switched my slides with photos of me crying and tripping. Everyone laughed. He just smirked. He made fun of me for years. He made me feel worthless. But I'm not doing this for him. I'm doing this to save my father's history. But also for revenge. The Woods' money is not clean. I'll work for them. I will find proof. And I will tear them down from the inside." Jane was quiet for a moment. The silence was so thick. Elena thought they had been disconnected. Then, Jane spoke. Her voice was firmer. She had a new respect. "That is bold, Elena. It's crazy, but it's bold. I am with you. But please, please be careful. The Woods play dirty. You are walking into a den of wolves." Elena smiled. She was happy for Jane’s support and friendship. "I will," she said. Her voice had a new purpose. They laughed softly. Jane tried to make things less tense with a joke about her latest bad date. But a sharp knock on the door stopped them. "One second," Elena said. She put her phone down. A maid stood there. She was a quiet woman. She had a blank face. She held a small, clean envelope. "For you, miss," she said. Her voice was flat. She turned and left without another word. Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She opened it. The envelope was thick and expensive. Inside, a note was written in sharp black ink. It read: Meet me at the top floor of Oriental Building. The note was a clear contrast to the maid’s simple manner. Her breath caught in her throat. The Oriental Building. It was a skyscraper. It was a tall giant of glass and steel in Manhattan. Who sent this? What did they know? Was this a clue to the Woods' secrets? Or was it something much more dangerous? Her curiosity burned. It was a flame in the dark. Questions went through her mind. She held the letter. Her heart beat fast with both fear and an exciting feeling. She was not sure what waited for her at the top of that tower.
