He wasn’t ready to ask about his new job duties. He turned down the hall with the bedrooms and knocked at Darken’s. “Come in!” Darken’s room was what Jet would have done if he had money and knew how to decorate. The walls were dark and slightly shiny, like tarnished silver. Jet touched one and it felt like fabric. The furniture was ebony and there were actual paintings in matching ebony frames. One showed a figure in a dark suit from behind, walking into a snowy wood at night, and the other was a falling angel, or maybe Icarus. Over the bed was a Japanese scroll showing a variety of supernatural creatures having a drinking party around a fire. There was a lamp shaped like a glass hand coming from the wall above a twisty wrought-iron thing that had been repurposed as a jewelry display. D
