ChapterTwo

"I didn't come for the show," Luca muttered, his voice low and like a snarl. He looked at the drink she was holding, which she had not noticed until now. "You're still acting the part, aren't you?" Bella's fingers closed around the glass. She snapped, a little edge in her voice, "I'm not playing anything." "This is myself. The show, the work; it's basically what keeps the lights on. Luca's eyes darkened, and his eyes never left her. Though it was not consoling, his lips closed into something like a grin. It was more hazardous, something colder. Bella, you are more than simply entertainment. I see it clearly. Bella's pulse raced. She wanted to turn away, release the stifling tension in the room, but his eyes stayed on her. No, she couldn't. She had been in this business too long to allow anybody, particularly not a guy like Luca, to corral her. She questioned, her voice faltering more than she had meant: "What do you want?" He moved nearer yet, cutting the remaining of their distance apart. Bella noticed the tiniest aroma of his perfume, something rich and seductive, a scent that seemed to encircle her like a chain and her pulse surged in her breast. "I want you to understand something," Luca whispered gently, his voice almost above a whisper. Bella, you are a very useful tool. a reward from which one cannot leave unclaimed. Her brow twisted in perplexity. Her tone wary, attempting to hide the interest growing into her voice, she questioned, "What are you talking about?" Something Luca couldn't quite place glistened in her eyes. "You live in a world you do not really know. a risky one. And in our world, everything has costs. Protection; loyalty; power. He stopped letting the words float between them like smoke in the air. Bella's body stiffened but she wouldn't back down. He said, "I'm offering you protection," his words like silk yet slanted with a promise she couldn't overlook. " Become mine, Bella. Sit at my side; I will provide all you need. Money, security... whatever you want. More yet. His remarks weighed heavily on the dense air in the room. Bella retained his eyes as her heart was thumping, her lips tightly closed. And if I reject it? Luca's facial expression remained the same. He did not wave. He was composed, relentless. Then you are on your own. And in our world, solitude is a death sentence. Her breath seized in her throat. She had heard the gossip. She had seen how the mafia world operated, how quickly alliances could shift, how allegiance was sold and traded like money. She had never, however, considered she would be so closely linked to it or that it would come for her. Though it wasn't a warmth she felt solace in, Luca's eyes softened. It was computing, like a chess player observing the next move of his opponent. Bella nodded, his words barely audible above a whisper, gently brushing her ear. "You do not want to fight this war by yourself. You want someone like me behind you to help you to survive this planet. Bella could feel her pulse clearly in her ears. Every nerve in her body screamed to reject him and this proposition. But she questioned everything about the fire in his gaze, the strength in his voice,. In this merciless world, could she truly live alone? Luca's fingers drifted towards her, his fingertips just brushing her arm. "You're not like the others," he added, his voice coarser now but with something deeper mixed in. Bella, you belong here. Beside me. Bella backed off sharply, her heart thumping in her chest. Though her words had already sank in her, she wanted to say no and order him to go. She realised she was confined. "Why me?" she said, her voice wavering slightly even with her best efforts to be cool. His eyes flicked with something incomprehensible, something more than passion, more than control. "Because you possess the means necessary for survival here. And from my end, I want you here. Now the room seemed smaller, the air heavier as his offer sank down on her. Bella stood there stuck between desire and anxiety, her brain whirling and her body on edge. Luca looked straight ahead. Bella felt his whole presence as his hand stroked her wrist one more. The room had unquestionable authority. Her created world started to fall apart, and in its place something much more frightening and alluring replaced it. She would accept the bargain? She would allow him into her universe? Bella stood at the junction of her destiny, the question hanging in the air unmet. She also realised one horrifying truth as Luca Moretti's eyes stayed on her: she had just been pulled into a game she couldn't get out of. Even with the bustle of voices filling the large dining room, the estate seemed less busy than normal. Bella, sitting at the side of the great table, observed the exchange between Luca and his friends with increasing discomfort. Now surrounded by people who appeared to operate with a code of their own, one that left no place for innocence or errors, she was part of a world she did not entirely comprehend. She hardly heard the quiet murmuring and clinking of glasses. Her mind kept returning to Luca's comments from the evening before, his dark promise still hanging like a shadow. Bella, you really belong here. Under my direction. She attempted to bury the memory of his voice by tightening her glass and whitening her knuckles. Still, she heard it. a chuckle. hazardous and low. The voice, clearly venomous, replied, "You're playing with fire, Moretti." Bella's eyes flew to the sound and she spotted Dominic Romano standing next to the fireplace. Though his stance was laid back, Luca's keene, calculated gaze never left him. The conflict in the room became thicker. Luca remained calm, his stance flawless, his motions purposeful. She did not flinch. Dominic said, his voice as cold as steel, "I'm not the one playing." Dominic grinned slowly, a predatory one not visible to his eyes. His black hair framed his jaw's strong edges in loose waves around his face. Bella could not overlook his definite conceit, a self-assurance that defined him. Though he was attractive in that dangerous manner, his glance at her seemed strange. His eyes strayed over her for a second before he turned back to Luca. Maybe you ought to be, Luca. You are creating formidable adversaries. Like he was testing the waters with Luca, Dominic's speech sounded smooth. "And I hear you're holding far more than you can manage." The words, loaded with challenge, lingered in the air. Most of the other males in the room Bella had seen in passing moved nervously. They were used to observing as power conflicts developed. Luca stayed fixated on Dominic, unrelenting. The hush between them shattered only with the clinking of ice in their cups. Their mutual tension was not confusing. Bella noticed it right away as soon she walked into the room. " cautious, Dominic," Bella could hear Luca's voice, which was subtly calm, but she sensed underlying danger. You neglect who you are talking to. Dominic lifted an eyebrow, not disturbed. Moretti, I have not forgotten anything. Simply said, I think you have become lazy. In our field of employment, this is a risky thing. Bella felt a chill down her spine from his voice's sharpness. She was unsure of the actual basis of their competition, but it was abundantly evident now: it was more than just business. Here there was something intimate, something under the surface only these guys knew. Bella struggled to calm her breath; her heart thumping in her chest. She had heard gossip, of course. Of the perilous politics among mafia families, of the relationships that may change with a stroke. Still, seeing it personally seemed different. There was evident conflict in the room. Circling each other, the guys resembled lions in a cage waiting for the slightest hint of weakness. Luca's fist tightened around his glass, but his face stayed still. "I need no lecture from you, Dominic. Luca remarked, his voice a low growl with undertone of fear in his tone, "My position is secure." It seemed as if the room may explode in violence for a split second. Bella watched the two men lock eyes, a wordless struggle of will playing out in front of her, her breath seized in her throat. Luca's face changed suddenly, his lips twisting into a chilly, assured grin. His fingertips gliding the rim, he gently set his glass down and never turned away from Dominic. "You've always been good at playing games, Dominic," Luca observed, his voice suddenly smooth and somewhat mocking. "Remember, however, not everyone is suited for this game. The chances are set against you. Dominic's grin slipped, only for a moment, then he recovered, his eyes flickering with something like annoyance. "We'll see about that, won't we?" He remarked, his words slanted with barely concealed menace. Unquestionably now, they were engaged in a power battle. Bella sensed it, an undertone of hostility so strong it choked the room. Acknowledging her position in the centre of this perilous dance, she moved uneasily in her seat. She was a pawn in their game, a piece they both sought after, not just a spectator.
