Chapter 8
Elise's Perspective
"Possessive," He said to me, chuckling. I raised my head abruptly and glared at him.
"What? Me, possessive?" I asked in disbelief, pointing at myself. "This giant guy has some nerve," I muttered under my breath.
"Don't talk with your mouth full," he said, his voice a warm caress, sending shivers down my spine. The way he looked at me, with that playful twinkle in his eye, made my stomach flutter with a strange mix of excitement and nervousness. It was a feeling I couldn't quite place, but it was definitely captivating.
I was about to speak again when something suddenly got stuck in my throat. I clutched my hands to my throat, my breath catching in my chest. I had accidentally choked on a mouthful of food. I couldn't even speak for help, and I couldn't even cough to dislodge whatever was stuck in my throat. I was struggling to breathe, and there was a squeaky sound every time I tried. I was about to lose consciousness when I felt strong arms wrap around me, pulling me up, and my glasses fell off.
Reuben's Perspective
I was consumed with intense fear when Elise choked on a mouthful of food. Her face was so pale, she was practically losing consciousness. I immediately pulled her up, but I accidentally bumped her glasses, causing them to fall. I positioned myself beside her, placing one arm across her chest for support. I bent her over at her waist so that her upper body was parallel to the ground. Then, I gave her five separate back blows between her shoulder blades with the heel of my hand. But the blockage still wouldn't dislodge.
I knew I had to try something else. In Elise's condition, I needed to perform abdominal thrusts immediately. So, I repositioned one foot slightly in front of the other for balance. I wrapped my arms around her waist and slightly raised and tilted her forward. Then, I made a fist with one hand and positioned it slightly above her navel. I grasped my fist with my other hand and pressed it hard into her abdomen with a quick, upward thrust—as if trying to lift her up. I gave her five abdominal thrusts until the blockage dislodged.
I sighed in relief when I heard her cough, as if she was clearing her throat. I gave her a glass of water, and she drank it immediately as I caressed her back.
"Are you okay now, Elise?" I asked softly, my voice a mix of relief and concern, my gaze searching for reassurance in her eyes.
Elise's Perspective
Instead of answering him, I looked around with blurry eyes. My soul nearly left my body with embarrassment. I saw a few pairs of eyes looking in our direction. "Shame on you, self," I chastised myself. To hide my embarrassment, I buried my face in his chest. "When will this bad luck end, Lord?" I whispered to myself.
"Just don't mind them, dunggo," he said, wrapping his arms around me. I automatically hugged him back. He called me "Dunggo." I don't know why, but I loved the feeling of being called that endearment and the way he enveloped me in his arms. My body recognized his every touch and caress as if I had known him for a long time, especially his masculine scent that filled my nostrils as I was buried in his chest.
I heard his phone ring. He immediately picked up the call, but I remained in his embrace. I felt a surge of happiness in his actions, but it was abruptly cut short when I heard the name he uttered.
"Joanne," he said into the other line. "Okay, I'll be there in a minute." He paused. "Yeah, I almost forgot, thank you for reminding me." He said and ended the call.
He gently moved me away from him while putting his phone in his pocket.
"Sorry, Elise, as much as I want to stay, I have a very important meeting to attend," he said.
"Meeting or mating?" I asked sarcastically, as if I were a jealous girlfriend. "Luh, jealous girlfriend, you don't even know his name, do you?" I lectured myself.
I heard him chuckle. With his facemask on, he kissed me on the forehead. "I'm all yours, my Elise," he said and hugged me tight. My heartbeat was so fast. I could hear every beat. When his phone rang again. That was my cue to push him away.
Reuben's Perspective
It was a call from Richard. "Hello, Joanne," I said, instead of Richard. I did that on purpose to see Elise's reaction. I was still facing her, so I saw her frown. Gotcha!!!
"It's Richard, man," he replied on the other end. "I'll just be a little late for the meeting." He added.
"Okay, Joanne, I'm on my way," I said as I turned my back to her and I started to walk away from her.
"Damn, man! You're making me into a woman," he complained on the other line, nearly making me laugh.
"I love you...," I said loud enough for Elise to hear. "...man," I added, once I was far enough away from her. I left her in that state... hanging. Anyway, in the time and the place, she'll find out who Joanne is sooner or later.
"Ah-oh, I love you too man," Richard said on the other line.
"Don't be late, or else I'll deduct 25% of your department funds," I said and ended the call before he could argue.
Someone's Perspective
"I have good news, boss," said a man in a bonnet talking to someone on the other line.
"Just make sure the news is good. If not, you're in trouble with me," the voice on the other end replied authoritatively.
"Agapito is currently preoccupied with a woman," said the man.
"And what good news is that?" the voice on the other end asked, his voice laced with curiosity.
"We can use her as a weapon against Agapito if we can't get him through peaceful means," the man said.
"BWAHAHAHAHA," the voice laughed devilishly, making the man holding the phone move it away from his ear. "Your tiny brain is useful after all," he said. "Go find out who this woman is right now." He ordered the man.
"Got it, boss." He said and ended the call.
