Mia's POV
I was still sitting there staring at the results when my phone lit up on my lap and lo and behold! It was Ethan.
My heart jumped so hard and I answered before the second ring.
"Mrs. Zhao," his assistant's voice came through and I was disappointed
"Mr. Zhao needs the gala contracts you were handling, we can't locate them, could you tell us where you filed them?" He asked
I sat there with the pregnancy results in one hand and the phone in the other.
"I'll send the location," I said quietly, and hung up.
I bought three more pregnancy tests on the way home because I didn't trust myself to believe one result.
Nora watched me line them all up on the bathroom counter without saying anything and when every single one came back positive she sat down on the edge of the bathtub and went very quiet.
I sat on the floor in disgust.
"You have to tell him," I said, more to myself than to Nora.
Nora looked up at me and her face said everything before her mouth did.
"Mia, don't." She argued
"He has a right to know," I said.
"The moment you tell that family you're carrying a Zhao heir, they will swallow you whole," she said, her voice rising,
"Chairman Zhao will turn that baby into a business asset before it even has a name."
I heard her, I really did and I would've loved to head to what she's saying but my heart does not than my head that I still picked up my phone that night and called Ethan.
It rang over and over but there was no answer. I called again an hour later and there was still nothing.
I put my phone face down as stared at the ceiling wondering why my life was this pathetic.
Three days later I was sitting in the living room when Nora went completely silent beside me and when I looked over to see what she was reading on her phone. She turned the screen toward me slowly.
It was a news article and photographs of Ethan and Sofia at some industry event the night before. In one of the pictures, Sofia was straightening his tie while he looked down at her and the headline underneath read something about Zhao Holdings expanding its creative division with Sofia Ren appointed as the new head of their arts and culture sector.
That was exactly the same company I had helped build connections for during three years of marriage.
It was the same sector I had personally suggested to Ethan in our second year together during one of the rare dinners where he actually listened to me. It was a sector that barely made any income until I have an idea and hhe had taken my idea and handed it to her.
I put the phone down on the cushion and didn't say anything for a while.
"Mia," Nora said carefully.
"I'm fine," I said.
I stopped calling after that and called Aunt Wei instead.
She came over that same evening and sat across from me at the kitchen table as I told her everything, the pregnancy, the calls he didn't answer, the article, all of it. She listened without interrupting,
Then asked, "What do you want to do?"
"I want to leave," I said and it came out steadier than I expected,
"For the sake of my baby and I" I added.
"You're keeping it right?" She asked and I nodded in affirmation.
"Good girl" she whispered and pat me at the back slowly.
Nora had cried and I had heard her on my way to my room. What a girl.
I spent the next few days packing quietly. I found things I had carried from the Zhao mansion without thinking, like a ceramic bowl I used to put on the kitchen counter, a book I had been reading the year we got married. And then at the back of my wardrobe, wrapped in a plastic bag I didn't remember putting there, tiny baby clothes. A small white onesie and two pairs of socks I had bought secretly two years into the marriage, during a week when I had convinced myself that if I just stayed patient enough, things between Ethan and I would eventually become something real.
I sat with those for a long time before folding them into my bag.
The morning of my flight Nora and Aunt Wei came with me to the airport and we didn't talk much on the way there, I just sat together in the back of the car with Nora's hand in mine.
At the departure gate, Aunt Wei straightened my collar and told me to eat properly and call the moment I landed.
I just nodded and kept it together because if I started crying in that airport I was not going to stop.
Then Nora grabbed my arm suddenly and I turned to see a black car pulling up just outside the terminal, one of those sleek private ones with no plates you could trace easily.
A man in a suit got out and walked straight toward me with a sealed envelope in his hand. I recognized him vaguely as one of Chairman Zhao's personal assistants.
He held the envelope out and said,
"From the Chairman, Miss Shen." He said quickly.
I took it and opened it and pulled out a check and i stared at the number for a moment.
There was no note, just a figure that had countless zeros.
Nora sucked in a sharp breath beside me when she saw it.
I stood there holding that check and I jooked up slowly.
"So this is all I was worth to them?" I whispered.
