chapter Six

The Secret Between Them Lila couldn't stop thinking about the newspaper article Daniel had shown her. The possibility that her parents' deaths had not been an accident haunted her throughout the night. Every memory she had tried to bury suddenly resurfaced. She remembered the funeral, the endless media attention, the cold faces of relatives fighting over money while she was still mourning. Most of all, she remembered the fear that had forced her to leave everything behind. By morning, she felt exhausted. She opened the café as usual, determined to act normal, but normal was becoming harder every day. The morning crowd came and went. Customers chatted about local events, children laughed outside, and Riverside looked exactly the same as it always had. Yet Lila felt as though she was living in a completely different world. Every smile she gave felt forced. Every sound made her glance toward the door. She was so distracted that she almost dropped a tray when Ethan entered the café. He immediately noticed her nervousness. "You haven't slept." Lila rolled her eyes. "Good morning to you too." "I'm serious." "I'm fine." "Still lying, I see." She tried not to smile, but a small laugh escaped her anyway. Ethan sat at the counter. "There it is." "What?" "The smile. I was beginning to think you'd forgotten how." Lila shook her head and continued working, though she couldn't deny that his presence made her feel calmer. Recently, Ethan had become someone she looked forward to seeing, even if she would never admit it aloud. "You know," he said, stirring his coffee, "most people talk about their problems." "Most people don't have you asking questions every five minutes." He grinned. "Fair point." For a few moments they sat in comfortable silence. It was strange. A few weeks ago, they had barely tolerated each other. Now the silence between them no longer felt awkward. The bell above the door suddenly rang. Lila looked up and froze. The black SUV from yesterday was parked across the street. A man wearing sunglasses stood beside it. Watching the café. Watching her. Fear shot through her chest. Ethan followed her gaze. "Do you know him?" Lila quickly looked away. "No." But her voice sounded uncertain. Ethan noticed. Before he could ask another question, the man climbed back into the SUV and drove away. Lila released a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. Something was wrong. Very wrong. And she knew it wasn't a coincidence. That evening, after her shift ended, she decided to call Daniel. He answered immediately. "Lila." "You said someone was searching for information about me." "Yes." "I think they're watching me." There was a brief silence. "What happened?" She explained about the SUV and the man outside the café. Daniel's voice became serious. "You need to be careful." "Who are these people?" "I wish I knew." "That's not helping." "I know." Lila closed her eyes. For years she had hidden successfully. Now it felt as though the walls around her were collapsing. "What should I do?" "For now, don't go anywhere alone." Lila laughed bitterly. "Great. That's reassuring." "I'm serious." Before she could respond, another voice called her name. Ethan. He was standing outside her apartment building. Daniel heard him through the phone. "Is that Ethan?" "Maybe." "Lila." "What?" "You trust him." She frowned. "No, I don't." Daniel chuckled softly. "You keep telling yourself that." Then he ended the call. Lila stared at her phone. Trust Ethan? That was ridiculous. Wasn't it? She slipped the phone into her pocket and walked toward him. "What are you doing here?" Ethan looked surprisingly uncomfortable. "I wanted to check on you." Her heart skipped a beat. "You came all the way here just to check on me?" "I was nearby." "You're a terrible liar." He laughed. For a moment, neither spoke. The evening breeze moved gently through the trees lining the street. The town was quiet. Peaceful. Normal. Exactly the kind of life Lila had wanted when she came to Riverside. Yet standing there with Ethan, she realized something. The life she had built was no longer enough. Because somewhere along the way, Ethan had become part of it. And losing him suddenly felt impossible. "You seem distracted," Ethan said. "Just thinking." "Dangerous activity." She rolled her eyes. "Do you ever take anything seriously?" "Sometimes." "When?" "When it matters." The playful expression disappeared from his face. For a second, he looked at her with such intensity that she couldn't look away. The air between them changed. Neither moved. Neither spoke. Lila became painfully aware of how close he was standing. Her pulse quickened. Ethan seemed to notice too. Slowly, he stepped closer. "Lila." His voice was barely above a whisper. She should have stepped back. She should have ended the conversation. Instead, she stayed exactly where she was. A strange mixture of fear and excitement filled her chest. For one brief moment, it felt as though the rest of the world had disappeared. Then a loud engine roared from the street. Both of them turned. The black SUV. It sped past them much faster than necessary. Lila's blood ran cold. The vehicle disappeared around the corner. But she had seen the driver's face. And she recognized him. Not from Riverside. Not from recent years. From her old life. The realization hit her like lightning. She knew who he worked for. Victoria Hart. Her aunt. The woman who had spent years searching for her. The woman who wanted control of the Hart fortune. The woman Lila feared more than anyone. Ethan noticed the color draining from her face. "Lila?" She couldn't speak. The past wasn't just approaching anymore. It had arrived. And if Victoria had sent people to Riverside, it meant one thing. Her hiding place had finally been discovered. For years she had been running. Now there was nowhere left to run. As the black SUV disappeared into the darkness, Lila felt a terrifying certainty settle over her. A storm was coming. And this time, it was coming for her.
